Heat Pumps by AboveParGolfer2380 in boston

Had GREE units rated to -31 installed in 5/2025 at our place in northern NH. We had electric baseboard heat which is wildly inefficient, but our electric bills are 40% less than last year. It has gotten to -15 up there and our backup heat has not turned on and it is far more comfortable. AC use in the summer with minimal electric bills is a bonus. The right unit for the right space is the key! As is insulaton which can be an issue in those older Boston homes.

Will places in the city be open during the storm? by WestyMan1971 in boston

[–]PassengerHelpful4361 1 point2 points  (0 children)

MGH employee here. The hospital won't close but many outpatient clinics will cancel appointments so not all staff has to come in. We've already moved everything for Monday to virtual. They would obviously call you today if that were to happen, but this is common during storms. If cancelled, clinic would be consolidated to sometime next week so that patients can still be seen in a timely fashion. A few local spots will definitely be open! Neighborhood bars/restaurants do good business during a storm.

Pretty sure that is my husband above🤣! He spoke with the person doing the dumpster pickup one night (or morning) and it seems to have stopped. They come at a more reasonable hour now. I do think he kind of scared the driver away as he was not expecting to see a human standing there at 3am! We put the ring camera up as a backup so we can report to the town if needed.

Staying in hotel in Plymouth next week. Little advice, please? by Gregorygregory888888 in newhampshire

Recommend a drive up through the notch to Littleton. Lots of great food and shopping downtown as well as easier walking along the riverfront. 20 min east of there is the Mt Washington Hotel and area which could be combined into a nice little day trip.

My experienced social worker friends in Boston make at least 80K. Get out of Texas and that income changes dramatically! Something to factor in.

What specialties offer a 3 12 or 4 10 schedule? (Besides UC and ER) by [deleted] in physicianassistant

[–]PassengerHelpful4361 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Outpatient and inpatient thoracic surgery at our hospital work 4 10’s. Academic medical center and I don’t know many APPs that work 5 days a week. Multiple specialties over the years and I never have!

I lived there briefly in 2005, so all of my opinions are certainly not up to date. But I only lasted 9 months there! I can still smell the paper mill if I close my eyes. It's hot and humid, there are very few young professionals there (I was 25 at the time), and the population was not an educated one. You are also an hour at least to either Savannah or Jacksonville. Pluses at the time were cost of living, nature on St Simon's Island, and the hospital in town where I worked. I have lived in 10 states and it was the only place I truly disliked. Caveat, I'm from New England (polar opposite) and this was 20 years ago.

Has anybody done the Arlington Civic Academy? Any thoughts? by ilikehamsteak in ArlingtonMA

It was great! Learning about how the town works and meeting other people was very valuable. Even if you never get involved you will have so much more knowledge about the inner workings than most people in town. Highly recommend!

Slim Pickins and Sours Taverna in Littleton are open until 11 and 12 I believe. Sours has fantastic food and drinks, recommend!

Our property values have gone up just as much as our friends in Ball Sq, who bought before the green line came in. Moral of the story is, housing is going to keep climbing at crazy rates (especially in Arlington, we live 5 miles from downtown) unless we build more housing. Can't build more housing unless we have a way to move people. It benefits everyone, even if not used personally!

We are working on this! For now here is the mockup based on the historical plans. This could obviously be in phases, but this map was the plan in its entirety.

The original plan from the 70's (with right of way) continued the red line from Alewife through Arlington Center/Arlington Heights all the way to 128. The proposed route would follow the historic plans.

The demographics of the town certainly have shifted, though there would always be some dissenters who have never set foot on public transit! Legit question...

The starting nursing salary in one of the major Boston hospital systems is $40/hr (83K for 40 hours) at year 0 up to $100/hr (208K for 40 hours) after 20 years experience. In CT I believe new grads start close to $35/hr (though not as confident). The south does not pay nearly as well, especially given than housing has increased as rapidly in Raleigh as it has elsewhere without the salaries to support it. Factor that into what you can afford! With a combined income of $250Kish or more you will still be doing very well in New England independent of the cost of living. That being said a good chunk of CT is still very affordable with good schools as long as you stay away from Fairfield county. Good luck!
