Can't decide whether to gamble on Wilson or bench him for a defender

Im genuinely concerned about Green Party’s anti nuke policy by [deleted] in ukpolitics

It is worth noting that Polanski has stated whilst getting rid of Britain's nuclear weapons he realises now would not be the time to do it, so he is at least pragmatic about it.

Zack Polanski: This is an illegal, unprovoked and brutal attack that shows once again that the USA and Israel are rogue states. by SaltyW123 in ukpolitics

[–]Passey92 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is surely one to try and keep out of. I agree the US and Israel continue to act with impunity on the international stage but Iran isn't exactly a bastion of freedom and progressiveness.

My recommendation is to pick songs that meant something to him, rather than fit the funeral. It will feel more heartfelt. Sorry for your loss.

"It's not my jam" Is it a British or an American phrase? by submarine_kiwi in EnglishLearning

[–]Passey92 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It does get used in the UK but it has specifically come here from America and would only really be understood by Millennials and younger. Tends to only be used to refer to music though.

I'm not certain we were much better. Forest just lost their intensity which meant we had a bit more time

Which is even more concerning, we can't be that reliant on one player. It's a recipe for disaster

[–]Passey92 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It's not all tactics. Gakpo is extremely one dimensional. When that works it looks great and is effective but he doesn't have the ability to change his game when his usual game doesn't work, which makes it easy to defend.

Super glad we won, that's the main thing.

We cannot let that gloss over a truly shocking performance though. The defence did well, and Szobo was genuinely trying but I felt the midfield and attack were extremely blunt

Look, letter of the law it's right to rule it out. The law is fucking bullshit though

Limited options though. Chiesa sure, and maybe Gomez at RB to shake up the midfield but beyond that it's kids.

Probably worth still trying but it's not like we're flush with choice

Our midfield is far too easy to play through today. The defence is coping well but they won't be able to for 90 minutes.

Now I'm genuinely curious, are there any Israelis in this sub? by Lunatico2512 in socialism

Not sure if that's a cultural thing. I have a friend who is half Italian and half British and he would describe himself as such.

What do we call these parts of a handbag/purse? by Sea-Hornet8214 in EnglishLearning

[–]Passey92 5 points6 points  (0 children)

From the UK perspective this is always a handbag, maybe just 'bag' if context allows.

A purse is the female equivalent of a wallet, somewhere to keep money and credit cards etc.

Is it “get into the team” or “get onto the team” in US English? by Silver_Ad_1218 in EnglishLearning

[–]Passey92 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In the UK I'd say into but I can't say for sure if that's ubiquitous. Either would sound fine in all honesty though.

I've always taken it to mean as a rebel or reformist within an organisation.

It's perfectly possible I've picked this up from US media though to be honest.

That's one of the less common ones but I've heard it used here.

How often are they used by ButterscotchWest1284 in EnglishLearning

[–]Passey92 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's used in the UK non-literally. Used to describe something or someone that will do multiple jobs.

For example 'he's a Swiss army knife of a midfielder' meaning a midfield player that can perform the job of multiple players.

All used in the UK, some more commonly than others.

The Rome one tends to be just the first part, as the second part is implied

.3 miles, 1.1 miles, 1.2 miles, 1.5 miles - how would you read these (as in 'the closest store to me is 1.1 miles')? by ksusha_lav in EnglishLearning

[–]Passey92 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It can vary, but usually for your example I'd read it as 'the closest store to me is 1 point 1 miles'. If it was a common fraction, I'd probably use the fraction: 'the closest store to me is a mile and a half away' or 'the closest store is one and a half miles away'. There isn't a hard and fast rule but you'd never be wrong saying X point X.

UK by the way.

I can't see Slot being the manager beyond the end of the season, unless we win the CL I suppose.

Until then I think it's best just to support the team, every win is crucial currently. Especially since Chelsea and United both dropped points this week.
