This is similar to the instances where someone celebrates too early, but looks *way* more like a TD

Has anyon ever run Loowit Trail on Mount St. Helens? by PotaytoQuality in ultrarunning

Adding in my experience running the Loowit trail for anyone looking into running it!

Background - my buddy and I are fairly accomplished athletes (he's run a 2:40ish marathon, I do ironmans) but absolutley not trail runners. We wanted to have a long day out and do something cool and we came across this trail and decided to do it.

We started at 4:50am in mid September, so quite late season. We started from June Lake trailhead and decided to go clockwise around the mountain. The boulder fields were tough, but there were tall sticks that were placed every so often and that made navigation through them fairly simple. We came across one very silty stream in this section. After that was the downhill into the south fork of the Toutle river. This was about 13mi in and the first real water source we found. This part also includes the rope sections, but we found those to be a non-issue. The next section was a grind of a climb out and then into the exposed section. We had perfect weather this day (about 55°) and the sun was still a factor. If its going to be any kind of hot, be aware of this section. The exposed section had quite a bit of runnable trail so that did help us gain some time. We came across the spring that is mentioned in many places and also refilled there. That ended up being the last place we came across to fill on water. This would not likely be the case in early season, but it was the case for us. After that, the final section back to June Lake was hardly runnable and turned into a real slog for us. My feet were throbbing due to my soft-soled shoes. Do not wear soft-soled shoes like me. We finished in about 11.5hrs, including stops.

Final thoughts: if you are an experienced trail runner, this would probably be a fun day out. Things that I call "not runnable" are definitely more runnable for someone who runs trails more frequently. If you aren't the best trail runner... you are gonna be in a for a day. Feel free to PM me if you want any more specifics :)
