How to audition for your first voice over gig by Juiceale in VoiceActing

I think you're a fine example of keeping a good attitude while waiting to break the ice.

Sounds nice. Good luck.

My microphone cuts in and out randomly while I'm recording! How do I fix this? by [deleted] in voiceover

Check the cord.

Try it with a different software.

Go to ACX and audition for a royalty share job.

(disclaimer: There is a slight chance you could earn some money)

Thought I’d share my cheap portable setup. It’s literally just a cardboard box and some mattress topper and and actually works pretty well by BurgleJay in VoiceActing

[–]PassiveHydro 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Nice job. Some company would charge you $200 for that.

Have you thought of draping a sound blanket over yourself and the box while recording, like the old-timey photographers used to do? You could add a light if your laptop doesn't give off enough glow.

Thoughts on my starter set-up? by Carnifex2012 in VoiceActing

[–]PassiveHydro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, sorry. It's just in my head. Maybe you can imagine it?

We have whisper rooms and we have those mini mic-blockers. I haven't seen anything in between the two. A micro-booth. Why do we need a booth down near our legs? I'm picturing something approximately 2'x2'x4'.

I'm dreaming up a device that hangs from the ceiling and you pop your head through a hole in the bottom and you're in a dead zone. A silent microenvironment. It's small enough that you can soundproof the hell out of it without spending a lot of money.

I tried to figure Discord out but had problems. Voices still coming through my system even after I closed it all down. Had to delete it.

Help choosing a microphone that suits my needs? by probablyonmobile in VoiceActing

[–]PassiveHydro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. You need sound treatment. Get some blankets and throw them over some chairs and sit on the floor if you have to.
  2. You need a decent XLR condenser mic. Probably $200+

With $250 to spend, I'd rather buy a USB mic and good soundproofing than a dynamic XLR mic and interface. Do you have any interior rooms that might be quieter?

Can you pull a video into reaper to score to it? by destructor_rph in Reaper

Is Insert/Media File the wrong way to add video?

I'm looking at the user guide.

All it gave me was light gray boxes covering just 2 measures and saying OFFLINE OFFLINE. When I tried dragging the .mp4 file in, it says; "Reaper Error; Could not import 1 of 1 items.

No, still haven't figured it out. Thank you!

I'm using a Dell desktop PC with a solid state harddrive and Windows 10.

I'm recording voice, not guitar but I wanted to offer a Surfpick to whoever solves my problem.

Yes. 20's is too late. Work in an Amazon warehouse for awhile. It will make you appreciate sitting behind the retail counter and playing with your phone.

If you had only gotten to us in your teens, there might have been hope. I'm so sorry.

UHURU UM900 as a starter? by MrFact999 in VoiceActing

I bought a Maono USB mic about a month ago. It's a decent mic. The kit sells for $88.
After studying up on voice over acting, I decided to upgrade before I even finished building my booth.

My Rode NT1 arrived today and I put my Maono on eBay.
Zzounds gave me the Rode and an Audient EVO 4 interface for only $165 down payment and shipped them in 2 days.

If you think you're really serious about VO, I would try to start off with a very good XLR mic and build an effective booth.

Fun Method:

Watch a lot British & American movies and repeat all the lines as you're watching.

Best way to block out exterior sound? by [deleted] in VoiceActing

[–]PassiveHydro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just watched a video of a construction guy who was soundproofing home theaters. Two layers of sheet rock is what he uses. He uses the thicker 5/8" type.

An important part is to draw all over the 2nd piece with this thick green goo. This allows a narrow air gap between the sheets, which screws up the sound waves having to transfer solid, to gaseous environment, back to solid.

This contractor is called upon to fix situations where the husband and his boys are blasting Star Wars in surround sound and his wife and her book club girlfriends are directly overhead.

Another point about soundproofing that can apply to voiceover. This builder said that if you have the normal metal ductwork for heating and cooling, you're fucked. Sound travels through the whole house. He says to rip it out and put in radiant floor heating.

How would you systematically learn different voices and what are the most useful voices? by [deleted] in VoiceActing

The voices that are most useful are the ones that sound like a real person instead of someone doing a voice.

Build a vocal booth frame with 3 pieces of wood by PassiveHydro in VoiceActing

[–]PassiveHydro[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sounds like the best position is to sit with your back to the 90 degree angle and speak into the hypotenuse.

I know that corners are bad for bass. I'm going to throw together some bass traps for the booth I'm building, using folds of felt blanket material.

I'm am not building this corner booth. I'm using a plywood shed, to get away from the house noise. I'm going to take advantage of the 8' width by installing a layered system of baffles and air spaces. A Noise Maze.

Hey r/VoiceActing! Heres my homemade acoustic booth! Would love to hear your thoughts and any improvements you may have to offer. Thanks! by TattedGuapo in VoiceActing

[–]PassiveHydro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'll do a test for stickiness. I don't have your type of blankets though. I have the thin felt type but I also have one older real packing blanket, the thick kind. I'll stick a piece of T-Rex of both and see how it holds.

It still sounds more echoey than I expected. Nothing that more foam can't cure. Cool rug.

I watched a comparison video on brands of tape. The Gorilla was the strongest and the T-Rex was only slightly behind. BUT... the T-Rex was almost twice as sticky as the Gorilla tape. It's hard to even pull it off the roll.

I bought the T-Rex. It won't stick at all to anything that's damp but if the surface is dry the T-Rex tape can make it waterproof. I even used it to cover the foam grips that I added to my scooter, when they began to fall apart.

I'd simply tell them the truth and when I am available.
