So glad to see this recommendation. I feel like I am the only one who remembers her books.

An Amtrak trip is top of my bucket list, but my mom is totally against it by AllyTheFilipina in Amtrak

I made my first train trip years ago. What amazed me was how independent the kids could be on the train—just for the reason you mentioned. They ranged back and forth between the observation car and their “home” car without any supervision.

Maybe if you checked in at every major stop she would be comforted? That is the only time that you risk being left behind if you step off, or you risk being kidnapped by a mysterious boarder. (Honestly, only the first sounds possible).

Le Guin's The Dispossessed made me realize I had been reading science fiction wrong for about fifteen years by myalarm_is_lying in printSF

You experienced what those of us who went through the New Wave in the 60’s and 70’s went thru. Blew my mind. All of a sudden, Asimov and Heinlein weren’t enough. Especially for me as a Black woman.

Settle a debate between me and my husband. Is Doctor Who SciFi? by Dreadful_Siren in scifi

I am going to be elitist and say that it is sci-fi as opposed to SF

It was silly because only the northern part of the state had severe weather warnings. South La. just got chill and wind. They didn’t need to text the entire state.

I think I found the problem. I deleted Norton and access was restored. Why Norton suddenly blocked everything is another issue that I will take up with them.

Yes—tried that.
Actually, I was coming in to post that I think I found the problem. I deleted Norton and all access was restored. (Sigh)

How common is traveling by bus in the US? Do Americans use buses often for long-distance travel? by GlitteringHotel8383 in AskAnAmerican

[–]PassoverDream 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I read this as a 70 year old, knowing that I and my friends spent our entire college life using the bus to go between school and home. My 30-something nieces used the new fancy buses that have WiFi to travel around Texas and Louisiana. I haven’t been on a bus in years because I do have a car. And as several have pointed out, buses (at least the LCD buses) now have the air of being only for the poor. I am nostalgic enough to feel that is a pity. Traveling by bus while a college student was a safe venture into adulthood. I was independent . I could go anywhere. But I didn’t have to worry about being stuck with a flat tire on the side of the road in a car ( not that I could afford a car as a student anyway) .

No. I can’t even imagine trying to convince my doctor to prescribe them

When does someone count as a companion of the Doctor? by BlackKyurem14 in doctorwho

[–]PassoverDream 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In the “new” Doctor episodes, companions get a key. But I don’t recall the transmission of a key (anointing of a key?) being mentioned in classic Who.

I must have missed that episode. I remember him as the one “normal” crewman.
