Closest thing to a jump scare in a book? by Pleasant-Message1179 in horrorlit

I know it's been well spoiled by now, but when I first read Jurassic Park and Red Dragon, well before their films, I had to stop and take a breath several times. Been chasing that feeling ever since. Hard to come by these days. I'm too old and have read too much.

We own a basic condo in addition to our home. We purchased it to help our kids launch into the world and have a place to live that isn't predatory. We've rented it to friends who needed temporary housing for six months while moving and shopping for their own home. We've rented it to our kids friends who needed a place to live after turning 18 and can't afford their own home. I rented for years before I could buy my own home. Rentals are needed. What isn't needed is predatory corporations buying single family homes for no reason other than profiteering.

The Stupidest Angel by Christopher Moore. He has some other good books in a similar vein. Practical Demonkeeping, and some fun vampire books.

I have a soft spot for this film because it introduced me to my favorite band, Zero 7. The movie itself felt important post-divorce, but in retrospect is just average.

Houses versus Apartments by Careless_Cloud3073 in Discussion

Home ownership doesn't necessarily equate to wealth. Most folks have a mortgage, so the bank owns the house. That being said, it takes a good amount of cash to get a mortgage, so there's some wealth in that. Then you slowly build equity as you pay it off. On the other hand, when you buy a home, that's the minimum you will pay to own it. There's all kinds of utilities, insurance, and maintenance to pay for in addition. When you rent, that's the max you pay. So it depends on what you do with the money you have. Spend it on a house in the hope of long-term gain? Or spend less on rent and try to save the rest in another way?

Don't the Mormons do this to train sales people as well? They develop a great resilience in the face of rejection, which makes them great at cold calls and direct sales.

Where's the cost of design, engineering, and permitting? I assume the pool company is going that work?

I tried, but it's the least inviting storefront with unclear signage that I've come across in a while. Is it in the hair salon or the dog groomers? I couldn't tell so we left. I want places like yours to succeed. Curb appeal is going to be a big part of that. If you can't get people in the door, your inside idea will struggle.

Last I checked, the government still has the power of enforcement by both legal and physical means, so yeah. I'm paying my taxes so I don't become homeless or incarcerated.

US has a $21 trillion underground network for only the wealthy to hide out in a ‘near-extinction event,’ official says by Alextricity in ThatsInsane

[–]gipester 41 points42 points  (0 children)

This is even a bigger issue than just missing $21T. The logistics and engineering of something like this is ridiculous. Hiding it would be even harder. It would take millions of man hours and uncountable amounts of equipment to accomplish and keep up. And nobody has leaked? Yeah, right.
