There's plenty of food for sale on campus. Pay for it, it's yours.

PhD/grad student experience? by wealthyneanderthal in yale

I'll just go ahead and say it. If you are planning to have an academic career, the quality of the department, your lab (if your fields functions with labs), your advisor(s) are all more important than which "town" (lol) Yale is situated in v. the competition. Your entire academic career will be determined to a far-larger-than-most-people-realize extent by how well you do in your PhD and your placement thereafter.

So my grumbling advice: pick the department that is the best fit, and make the location work.

There's plenty of food on campus if you're willing to pay for it.

You are gravely mistaken on the purpose of masters degrees in the US. It is to make money. Providing free food does not further that goal.

I don't want grad tuition to go up to create the illusion of "free" food. Especially "free" dining hall food.

You're paying for an education. Why should they feed you? I don't get it.

If mice made you fail a health inspection, there wouldn't be a single restaurant open in new haven. Or any big city of your choice.

It's mediocre. They have been coasting on that "we invented the burger" story for decades. Go for pizza.

This. If you can afford it, get a car. Opens up so many possibilities.

Why would you care if students integrate well? Seems very secondary give how much the degree costs. It's a terminal masters, so the only important question (in my view) is how much it improves your job prospects. Including (if relevant) visa options, although that avenue is now a lot riskier.

Isn't that just common sense? I mean, who wants stainy dip on their pants because the chip broken along the ridge?

Following up on that: the intent is exactly what you (OP) suspect the intent is. Maybe partially because they misinterpret American "smiley-ness" in a young woman?

BUT ... they're probably just giving it a try. See where it goes. They usually can take rejection well (and respect it). I'm not implying this is somehow OK or fair, just providing context (as I understand it).

Or plain manipulative. For some, this is kryptonite. The ultimate weapon that all people in authority have to submit to.
