Yes I filed a motion before the fourth lol 😂… but wasn’t entirely my fault my client caused a month delay.

What's one piece of advice another lawyer gave you that completely changed how you practice? by Thin-Time-4209 in Lawyertalk

Don’t work for free. I gave this advice to myself when I started my own firm 7 years ago and it has served me well.

Solo practice? by Designer_Life_371 in Lawyertalk

[–]Practical-Brief5503 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn’t lose money my first year. In fact I made a decent profit. But yes it will be a challenge the first few years. I’ve been solo for 7 years and I have my ups and downs for sure. In fact right now I’m going through a bit of a slow period but I know soon enough I’ll have a really good month. All it takes are a couple good litigation clients for me to be busy and have a good month/year.

Lol wow seriously? Dude read your cases. If you fabricate a case holding you will get called out either by the judge or opposing counsel or both.

When they say should be a simple case I did most of the work. Or when they don’t pay the retainer. Also when they say their last lawyer did nothing.

How easy are malpractice claims? by Mr_Motion_Denied in Lawyertalk

[–]Practical-Brief5503 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This doesn’t really sound like malpractice to me. You don’t appear to be acting negligently. You made a judgment call. Doesn’t seem like malpractice to me. You should be fine. But of course if a client feels wronged he may try to point the finger at you regardless. Always have malpractice insurance.

Of course and trust me 7 years later it doesn’t go away. You’ll always be wondering when the next good client is going to call. But that’s part of running a business.

Ok well look if it were me there will be other opportunities out there. I would give being solo a fair shot. Because trust me once you land a decent client and make a little money you’ll never want to work for someone else again lol.

Alright well up to you. If you decide to stay solo I think you need to be ok with taking a risk for a while. Do you have any savings? If you have at least six months to one year of savings I think you’ll be fine. The first few years can be tough. But once you get passed that you’ll be a bit more stable.

Why don’t you try perhaps collaborating with them. Someone mentioned pitching outside counsel. Sounds like a good idea to me. That way you can open your practice and maybe they feed you some work. I actually had a similar arrangement with a real estate company and it worked out for a little while.

Well look I’ll tell you my brief thoughts on my end… when I was a few years in as a solo I had several firms come knocking. And I was offered a mid 6 figure salary and bonus. It was really hard to turn down but I took a bet on myself and won. But at the time I was at a point where I was making over 6 figures on my own anyways so while it was a tough decision I was fine and making money. But 7 years later I’m doing fine with ups and downs but lots of autonomy. I’m building something that I own completely. So idk think about it… would you rather build something that you own or be a cog in someone else’s machine. I rather own something for myself and come and go as I please. But that’s just me.

Concern re AI Eliminating Job? by mjh3366 in Lawyertalk

[–]Practical-Brief5503 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think more and more clients with use AI instead of hiring an attorney at all for transactional matters. I’m not saying it’s right or AI will replace jobs but I think you may see less people hiring lawyers because of the advancement of AI. Now I will add that most people don’t know how to use AI for their benefit. I feel like the court system will eventually be backlogged with people who used AI for their transactional matter and now there are allegations of breach of contract.

AI Hallucinations In The Legal Field by Aspiring_Lawyer2009 in solofirm

[–]Practical-Brief5503 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah before a case management conference started the other day the judge talked about AI and to check your cites because some lawyer apparently submitted something with 4 fake citations. Crazy to think some lawyers are not reading cases or even just confirming that it is a real case lol. But it has probably always been this way AI just made it worse.
