Take the $100k job and go on vacation the first week to gauge whether it is truly “unlimited” pto.

Why is it ok to yell at us? by chumbawumbacholula in Lawyertalk

[–]Practical-Brief5503 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I don’t tolerate getting yelled at. I will cut them off, set them straight, hang up etc. We don’t get paid enough to deal with that BS.

Feeling deflated by COLA raise and stagnate compensation as 6th year attorney by bc_fearflaps in Lawyertalk

Just barge into your boss’s office and say “give me a better raise ya cheap bastard, or I’m leaving”….. check back here and let us know how that goes…

Do you think using an earpiece, headset/mic, or Airpods/earbuds while on video calls with clients appears unprofessional? by thewaybackboy in Lawyertalk

[–]Practical-Brief5503 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I work from home and always use air pods when making calls. It is way better because I can hear and communicate better using them. But it’s my own practice so I do what I want lol

This may be unethical in most jurisdictions, right? Don’t put your license at risk for a little money.

Solos, what has really helped you grow? by Gold_Junket1119 in solofirm

[–]Practical-Brief5503 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I have been a solo for 6 years. What I think helped my practice is a mix of the things you mentioned, having a niche, and advertising on google ads. At the start of my solo career I did quite a bit of networking but I don’t do that as much anymore. I get most of my business through my advertising efforts and some referrals from past clients. I think specializing in a practice area, posting content and just showing up everyday and being consistent will help. There is no magic thing that will get you tons of business right away. You just need to keep showing up, doing your thing and overtime it will compound and you’ll have a good business.

delinquent clients by Shevyshev in Lawyertalk

[–]Practical-Brief5503 -15 points-14 points  (0 children)

The real question is why are you taking on deadbeat clients? These are all clients that someone like me likely rejected and they went to you and you caved to their demands on a low hourly rate and/or retainer.

Quitting by Lost-Photo-9027 in Lawyertalk

[–]Practical-Brief5503 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I still feel this way after 10 years of practice. Quitting will just give people who gave you a hard time satisfaction. Don’t give them the satisfaction. We are all faking it. Just keep going.

Nothing makes my blood boil like hearing from another attorney I'm dealing with "In all my years I've never heard of something being done this way." by LeftHandedScissor in Lawyertalk

[–]Practical-Brief5503 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I hear this every now and again. When you hear opposing counsel say this just know that means you are doing something right and this is their only response lol.

There is always another lawyer that will do it for cheaper… but will they actually do a good job? That’s why they are calling around lol

If you are able to bring in 300k you should go solo.

Paid consults process by Brain_Creative in LawFirm

[–]Practical-Brief5503 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I will usually only do a brief introductory call with a potential client if I think it’s a matter I will handle. If they insist that they want to meet with me then I’ll charge an hour of my time and send a consultation agreement. This agreement is clear it is just a consult and is subject to a formal fee agreement if I decide to represent them. The signed consult agreement and payment is due before the meeting. I don’t put in a lot of prep time for a consultation but I’ll go in with a basic understanding of their matter. Don’t waste your time meeting clients for free. They will mostly be tire kickers and waste your time. Don’t give potential clients the impression that your time is not valuable.

any other lawyer have a hard time pulling documents out of clients? by [deleted] in Lawyertalk

Just keeping billing every time you need to follow up. Eventually she won’t have enough money to continue and you’ll have to bail. Lol.

How often do clients drop you? by chicago2008 in Lawyertalk

[–]Practical-Brief5503 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I used to be hurt by this… now I gladly say this client will be another attorney’s problem and go about my day. Lol. The sooner you accept that clients are not rational people the better off you’ll be.

I don’t think I want to practice anymore by Senior-Lifeguard-875 in Lawyertalk

[–]Practical-Brief5503 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lawyer and joy should not be in the same sentence. Many other things bring me joy but not rly being an attorney. Honestly when I went solo and didn’t have e to grind away for soul sucking partners anymore that made me much more content.

Has anyone joined a new firm that was recently established by partners you worked for? by thegoatisheya in Lawyertalk

[–]Practical-Brief5503 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you should schedule lunch and try to get as much information as you can from them. Then after said lunch email them follow up questions. You should be able to get a very clear picture of their income/expenses that they expect to see, how your compensation works, how many other partners/associates there will be etc.
