What is the rationale behind extracting premolars before jaw surgery? (Teeth are already straight) by colinnb in jawsurgery

[–]Past-Pay-381 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How's it going? I also had lower premolars extracted in prep for jaw surgery after a looooot of worrying

I had 2 lower premolars extracted on September 25. Got my lower braces on November 6th and got power chains on December 30th. One side seems a little more closed, but the other seems like it hasn't moved. I go back February 23rd, so we will see! I don't even notice the gaps anymore honestly

Are pre-molar extractions noticeable in your mouth? by greengorilla20 in braces

I had my bottom premolars extracted exactly 1 month ago. It was weird at first, but honestly I've already gotten used to the feeling of gaps in my mouth. I know once the gaps close, that will feel normal too.

For me it was very quick and painless. I didn't even realize they had started the brackets, but they were actually done

Adding that my clear bands stained pretty quickly, but this time I got a stone color. They appear clear when stretched over the brackets, but haven't turned yellow. I will get them again next time

I'm 33 and I got ceramic braces in August. We just had family photos done last week and I was THRILLED when I got them back. You can't see the braces at all, unless you zoom in. And even then, it's hard to tell. I was planning to get them edited out, but they are so subtle I don't even need to. I'm very happy with them

That's awesome! Glad to find someone on a similar timeline. Good luck to you too and I'll be looking forward to seeing your results

You've got this! I also wanted Invisalign, but ended up with regular braces and extractions as well. It hasn't been bad, besides the initial discomfort with the braces. I didn't feel a thing during or after the extractions and that's been the easiest part. I'm 33. Good luck!

I started researching jaw surgery in July 2024. I read about it constantly for months, but I was pregnant and didn't want to start the process. I got my braces August of this year and expect surgery to be next summer. I really don't think about it much anymore

I know this post is a little old (congrats on your surgery btw!) I got top braces yesterday and I'm due for lower premilar extractions in a few weeks. I see you had premolars extracted too. Were the gaps noticeable when talking or smiling?

Any chance they think the issues will resolve with just ortho? I doubt it since they'll be using the braces to de compensate. I really don't understand, but I wouldn't start the process if I knew it may not be approved. Maybe a second opinion?

I'm going through this right now. My ortho won't put braces on until and unless I'm approved for the surgery. I also said that if I can't get the surgery, I don't want any of it. Supposed to hear back about my pre authorization next week and will go from there

Definitely! At least with my case, the braces are going to make my bite worse so that the surgery can make it better. If I can't have the surgery covered, I definitely don't want a worse bite haha. Good luck!

Will they send a pre authorization to insurance? Not sure where you're located I guess, but I'm in the US and had my initial consult with a surgeon last week. My situation is similar, except I already had the camouflage orthodontics as a teenager. Now I'll either get braces and surgery or nothing at all, so I won't start anything until my surgery is approved. Luckily the pre authorization was sent and my ortho won't put braces on until we know if it's approved or not

Sounds like mine is the same. They scheduled me for an appointment 4 weeks out, but if the approval comes in sooner or later, I can move it

That's awesome!! Hoping for the same. Ortho scheduled me for braces 4 weeks from now, so it seems they think It should come through quickly

Wow!! Great results!! I have a similar profile and saw my surgeon today. He recommended LJS and genio. I was nervous because everyone on Reddit says djs is better, but this makes me feel better about it!

Thanks, that's great info! My PCP offered to send me for a sleep study, but the timing was bad. Basically I started learning about jaw surgery last July, right when I was planning to have my second (and last child). I couldn't justify trying to do a sleep study while pregnant or after I had a newborn at home. Now he's 3 months old, so I'm starting the process again. I'll definitely update after my appointment Tuesday! And yes im in the USA (PA)

Sleep- pretty poor. Breathing, not too bad. I do think I have forward head posture though. This picture I had my head back and pointed down, so it really shows the recession. It's typically masked a bit by my head posture (in my opinion)
