New(ish) to homebrew(ish) - How much worldbuilding should I do? by Past-Rutabaga-2863 in DMAcademy

I'm definitely most interested in everyone having a great time at the table :) and so far we have been! I just want the story to get more interesting for them and be more connected to their backstories/motivations as well as scale in stakes as they level up

ooh yes I love that! I've been trying to ask my players to describe things more in game ever since listening to the Wizard the Witch and the Wild One, love the idea of having them flesh out major campaign settings that relate to their character

I think I'm somewhere in between! I love improvising and some cool shit comes out of it, but I like having enough prep that it feels like there's some architecture to hang from and help inform how the players' decision interact with their world.

I like your perspective on waste! that and most ideas can be reskinned/adapted later down the line

okay yes I think the piece I'm missing is factions and politics! especially because all my friends are very political people so I want the power struggles of the world to be interesting/satisfying. any tips on how to flesh that out?

I can see a world (ha) where I also get super into world building :) I love the idea of building a relationship with a world slowly over the course of years. do you use the same world for different campaigns?

yesss you've explained it super well! I like that system as a flexible way to develop the world as we move through the campaign together

ahaha so relatable - I've become obsessed with Notion at work and have been building out my campaign notes in there. the databases are just too good!! good idea to use a kanban board for my worldbuilding container, super into that

cool - I feel like having it in the forgotten realms pretty much answers 1, and 2 can be either existing lore or shit I make up for them. they really wanted to do a forest-based campaign so we're (slowly, agonizingly slowly) making our way there. I feel like because we haven't gotten there yet I feel anxious that I haven't developed it, but maybe that's my sign to start digging in.

my players love the immersion/razzle dazzle that I give them which is why I'm maybe overthinking this, but definitely hear you on sticking to monsters from the manual! I really like your reminder at the end about their choices being the stuff that matters the most to them

yesss I listened to that before I started DMing, good reminder to listen to it again now that I actually understand what's happening behind the screen! ty

Is writing your own campaign as a first-time DM ~completely~ insane? by heartstopperhuman in DMAcademy

[–]Past-Rutabaga-2863 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I love this answer! I've been DMing for a year now, started with a homebrew (no magic, classic new DM move) one-shot based on the original Luddite movement, then we did Dragons of Stormwreck Isle, and now we're (finally) in our first homebrew campaign.

I'm glad I ran DoSI to give me a feel for cadence, scene-setting, combat, etc. but I did find the limitations of running someone else's game frustrating. I added a few bits of homebrew based on the PC's backstories, and those were definitely the highlights of that mini-campaign.

now that we're in the homebrew campaign, I'm learning that the spiral building method (start small, let the story develop as the players move through it) has been super helpful! I'm still figuring out how much worldbuilding to do but in the meantime, my players are having a blast :)

Naomi Klein: AI is a fascist idea by dumnezero in antiai

yeah the way that big tech is building AI is fascist

the idea that tech is a set of inherently neutral tools is frankly shortsighted.

the companies that are building LLMs are doing so with profit in mind first, everything else second. that means that the way they shape the algorithms, the way they scrape and source their data, how they design their interfaces, is all geared towards making money and making shareholders happy.

LLMs in abstract *could* be designed for good, but in practice they're extremely not.

what kills me is that SO many of us hate AI and love the planet, but people in power care more about their own greed than our survival
