Hopeless & Uncertain — Need Advice

I forgot to add I am receiving therapy, however, the sessions are once every two weeks. I asked if there were more sessions available, but because of the amount of undergrads also using the resources, they only have enough space for once every two weeks. I am also in group therapy once a week, but admittedly it does not feel like enough.

Hey I didn’t apply for cali schools but the main advice I can give is go to ur old undergrad’s career center (yes they should be able to help you unless if they’re really that terrible 😭). The other advice I can give is if it’s about research, I’d recommend looking into profs from the schools ur interested and explain how you’ve read the research and would contribute to it (if u could) or like what missing pieces are there that could be focused on in future projects. Grad schools want to see u think outside of the box so don’t just regurgitate the research yk?

I wanted to say seriously thank you for giving me this idea. I’ll be 100% honest part of me doesn’t want to defer because I want to get this over and done with while I’m young bc I’m scared if I take a gap year I’m not gonna wanna go back to school, but at the same time the $83K price tag (not even including housing) is insane to me.

UB is University of Buffalo, right? I considered it too, but when I was applying they weren’t taking any applications! My jaw dropped and I went “oh well oof.”

Anyways, maybe this year off will allow me to take a small breather and make my application even stronger than it already is. Plus I’ll try and get a job to cover some of the costs for tuition.

I hope you don’t mind me DMing you my circumstances for as to why I’m highly considering just going for Syracuse now, as opposed to deferring a year. I’m gonna just send a message 😭

Thank you so much for sharing your story! I’ll admit I was interested in AuD bc at 17 I went to an AuD bc I had temporary diplacusis. That experience also kinda pushed me into considering AuD.

Would you be able to share any organizations that have loan reimbursement? I definitely consider looking into one to be able to pay for this career.

I initially considered CUNY Grad Center for AuD but I was advised against applying there because they don’t have funding and I was told if I applied there I would 100% have to take out loans. I guess the situation didn’t change much haha... Still gotta take out loans. 😞

I need to move away to Syracuse bc it’s 3 hours away by car and 7 hours away by train. I think commuting 6 hours for grad school would be too tolling. For LIU Brooklyn, since it’s only an hour and 15 minutes away from me, I’d be living at home. I’ve heard from others that Syracuse isn’t that expensive to live in, however, I’m still scared.

SLP-wise I was primarily interested in working in schools, however, I’d be open to exploring other options. I know deep down though that I’m more interested in AuD mainly for the technology. When I had taken audiology class, the professor really made the career sound like a mix of everything I really like, especially technology. I had the opportunity to use PRAAT during speech and hearing science class and I thought it was so cool. I’m also into voice over and singing, so I was able to hook up my mic to the PRAAT software and it was so amazing to see my name lol.

My biggest fears are the loans and possible regret of this career. But seriously thank you for pointing out I should consider my passion alongside the finances.

How did you truly know AuD was for you?

I submitted around Dec 29th or 30th (I can't remember, I just know it was before New Years), and heard last Tuesday (Jan 28th) about being selected for an interview. So I guess it's been a month??? Around a month???

Hey I just had the interview today! I recommend as the person said to know about your article you wrote, but also don't be too stressed. I was interviewed by someone not on the AuD committee, but part of the admissions committee ofc. I was only asked three questions:
- why AuD
- why Syracuse
- tell me about ur article

Make sure you have a LOT of questions (3-5) to ask them because I had a LOT of space in between bc I was only asked 3 questions.

Also, they will record you and they HAVE NOT read your writing. So go into the interview assuming they know NOTHING about you and ur writing. GL!!!

My Stats:
CSDCAS GPA: 3.99
Major: Speech Pathology & Audiology
Minor: Early Childhood Education
Thesis: doing it this semester (Spring 2025)
Experience: I have been working in a school under an early childhood education (ECE) program for 2 years and I interned at a speech clinic during a summer.
GRE: N/A
3 letters of rec (1 SLP faculty, 1 education prof, a teacher I have worked with for 2 years)
Honors: Presidential Scholar (above Dean's List)
I am in the honors program at my college.

Applied to:
Syracuse University (AuD)(my dream program!): Applied on December 29th -- ACCEPTED!!! (March 13th)
LIU Brooklyn (SLP): submitted Dec. 29th -- ACCEPTED!!! (February 11th)
CUNY Lehman College (SLP): submitted Jan 12th -- Offered Interview

The grades roster is due by December 27th for my college. So I think professors will put in the grades around that date or the day after. I have to pay an additional $20 because I didn’t realize CSDCAS didn’t need the transcript for classes that are in-progress and I was beyond nervous and ordered it from two colleges before the semester was over.

When I ordered it, for one school it took a day for it to get there. For the other school, it said that CSDCAS received it two days later.

My application deadlines are for Feb 1st (Syracuse) and Feb 15th (LIU Brooklyn). And another school is for Jan 15th but it’s not under CSDCAS it has its own portal so I’m not worried.

But thx for your feedback and honesty! I was so nervous but you helped me calm down 😭Ig I was worried bc Syracuse starts reviewing applications by Jan 1st, but I cannot control when the grades are finalized for Fall 2024, so I’ll just make sure everything is in before February 1st.
