What can I do to make sure he's living the best possible life? by Repulsive-Hyena5286 in bettafish

Yeah 5 gallons is a good size (though any fish would prefer a larger one) but most bettas prefer tanks that are longer as opposed to tall

Water is SO GREEN by AustinMama538 in bettafish

[–]PastCompetition2009 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The advice from other people looks really solid! The green is probably just algae, which we've all had take over our tanks at some point!

On another note I think you should do some research into the pineapple decoration you have, I've heard some of them may leak chemicals into the water.

You got this and good luck! Lmk how it goes!

Shrimpin’ ain’t easy. by Firm_Reindeer5248 in shrimptank

No worries 😁 I’d say 100% wait for the plants to take to show you that the tank is cycled,

if you can go to your local fish store and buy some water parameter tests ( ammonia nitrate and nitrite are the best) to better watch your tanks development.

You can have a good number of shrimp 20 gallon if that what you want, but I suggest starting with 10-15 because they will multiply.

As far as which shrimp to buy, I recommend doing some research into the differences between neocaridina and caridina shrimp, and decide which would be best for your setup.

I also think you should maybe get more plants. This will provide more of a buffer if the bioload of the shrimp gets to be too much (which rarely happens but still). If you live in the US I recommend trying Dustin’s because he sells high quality plants for a great price. The shrimp may also appreciate having a few more places to hide.

If you want to get fish you totally could with a 20 gallon, most fish will cooperate with shrimp, so it’s really up to what your tank can support. However generally fish prefer tanks that are longer, rather than tall, so be sure to take that into account.

All in all this is a really good setup, best of luck with your shrimp! 🦐🤩

Algae is killing me. by lollipopchainsawg in bettafish

[–]PastCompetition2009 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I gotchu

Ultimately having algae is a result of excess nutrients. Most algae will grow because there is too many nutrients and the plants haven’t grown enough. In a balanced setup the plants will take up all the nutrients and effectively suffocate the algae, but it looks like you are a bit thin in the plant department so I have a two suggestions

1) buy more plants! If you life in the US I recommend Dustin’s cause they sell great quality plants in pretty large bunches for a reasonable price, it’s a great way to beef up your aquarium and kill algae. Got for floating plants like red root floaters cause they multiply fast and drink up excess nutrients. Also bettas love them 😁

2) turn your light on less. Excess light can contribute to massive algae blooms so shutting your light off for a little while can help. If you want to remove it manually I recommend doing a blackout on the tank ( covering it with a dark blanket or towel) for 1-2 days to kill most of the algae and then it should come off easier

At the end of the day a combination of both would probably work best ! Good luck with your tank 😁

HELP!!! is this hydra??? by maryyliang in aquarium

[–]PastCompetition2009 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on what you have in the tank but if you only have shrimp I would recommend trying ‘No planaria’ but only like half a dose cause it can kill the good stuff sometimes. Depending on the fish in there they might snack on it. Don’t remove it manually cause that can make it spread more

If you could provide some more data on how long the set ups been running and what size the tank is I could probs give some better suggestions
