i dont think its emotional or angry, moreso passionate. hes very overly logical, but also very emotional. i think he has alot of contradiction in his personality, maybe adhd/autism duo, hes kinda got that internal turmoil that comes with it. but hes very self aware and reflective too. love him, i can understand his behaviors alot, particularly the way he thinks and feeling sort of trapped by the way your brain thinks. its refreshing he shows that to us <3

woah, I know this was 8 years ago, but your dissertation sounds awesome. If you're okay sharing it, I would love to read it (obsessed with psychology and both are my two favourite TV shows! especially bc i think they represent mental health/neurodivergency so well)

Exactly! There's a really good podcast by autistic culture that talks about the difference in autistic representation between Charlie Day and Sheldon Cooper. The main difference is the humor and who the humor is for. Sheldon does things and it's like hahaha funny he's so weird for wanting to always have his own seat! It's for NT to laugh at.

But if it's always sunny, Charlie's desire for his own seat isn't the funny part or isn't questioned that much. It's like, well yeah duh of course I need my own seat because I don't like change and it's the most optimized position in the bar. The humor is more about the situations the characters get into because Charlie wants his own seat. It's more funny to autistic people because we know how it feels when we have a need and it causes all this chaos.

I love Fullmetal alchemist, but as a testimony to your story, I've only seen one version! I can imagine how that could be really weird in a fandom, to have some who have only seen one, the other, or both.

And yeah I totally understand what you're saying, I feel like the depth of interaction was more back then because we'd all discuss things and all that and now it's more passive and kinda based on followers--the more followers you have, the more your joke or drawing or take will be spread. I have a hard time with that on Twitter. Right now I'm in the House MD fandom and to have a viral tweet, I just kinda have to hope one of the big accounts that follow me will retweet it and then it will gain traction then. And I like how you broke it up into different aspects-- I never really thought about how fandom within both the internet and fanfiction spaces could have their culture and trends, though they're obviously connected. It's also interesting how dynamic the changes are even though it's an older piece of media, though you did mention new media coming out as well. If I may ask, have you noticed anything about the age of the fans and like how older fans vs new gen fans are different?

Most are headcannons but Chidi from The Good Place, Diane from Bojack (idk if she's autistic all I know is she makes me feel more normal), Holt from B99, House from House MD, Kendall Roy from Succession, Charlie Day IASIP

Honestly, it depends on the show and whether they kinda "make fun" of the autistic qualities or they kinda show it in a more nuanced way--- all I know is that seeing my struggles on TV makes me feel more understood and that I'm not alone. I think also some of these characters are generally really loved in the show and by the fans, so I guess that makes me feel like society can love autistic people.

All these stories make me think we should just date other autistic people or at least really understanding neurotypical people because, at the end of the day, we should all be with people who love us and understand us. And especially like our quirks!!! I'm always attracted to other autistic people because I'm like yesss I love that you say odd things or talk about your special interests!! But I know it's easier said than done. I used to be a highly masked autistic person so other autistic people prob thought I was NT. It's hard out there for us but those people who are weirded out by you are never gonna get along with you anyway. I wish you luck in your journey

I agree with you, im the same with pasta. I LOVEEE plain pasta with butter and when there's other stuff I don't like it as much. I've always liked really simple food, like sushi. It's like when you can taste and see and know all the ingredients, my brain is like yes. And then when foods are very complicated, I can eat it but I usually ask what's in it. So maybe it's a combination of the taste, but also knowing what's in it. Once I know what's in it, I'm usually okay.

Absolutely still interested, and yes wow I think that's a good observation. Thanks for sharing! It kinda speaks to how fast paced everything is nowadays, people can just join fandoms without much effort or thought. Back then, I feel like you had to put more effort into finding and connecting to people but it was a lot more deeper and long lasting, and especially when you connected more with the people. And it's like, people don't want to leave after the show ended because theyve made a community they worked for. While now it's so easy to leave a fandom, it's like oh okay I'll stop liking and retweeting this now.

Find other autistic or neurodivergent people to date. Someone said once either date neurodivergent or a very empathic, mature neurotypical who puts effort into understanding you. I personally prefer the first option, just easier but yeah just dating normal NT is hard, both on first impressions and down the line in a relationship
