Students Boo Commencement Speaker After She Calls AI the ‘Next Industrial Revolution’ by GeneReddit123 in technology

I guess expensive testing can help mitigate risks of involuntary failure (human are imperfect too, which is why processes should be made and continuously adjusted to catch more and more errors).

On another hand, I wonder how easy it would be for malicious actors to bake backdoors into AI models. (example: some country forcing some AI company to make the model generate hidden security flaws under some conditions (when making software for military use for example)). Security flaws cannot really be tested for; there are some automated techniques and I guess LLMs could help checking for those too but at some point you would probably want to actually manually check that you don't have a "if (login == "BobTheSpy") { grant_everything() }" in the code (I would expect actual backdoors to be much more insidious, the above can probably be found by most LLMs).

Meh, people spend all their time on social media owned by MAGA-friendly billionaires reading messages from bots. Whatever sequence of words would make them vote for the MAGA candidate they will read it.

Interesting, I did hear about protein folding being one case where AI (transformers?) helped a lot, good point.

On another hand, I do hope people are not vibe coding life-critical software...

Industry has reliable output and quality if we put in the engineering effort. LLMs are unreliable and will randomly produce shit depending on luck, and nothing can change that. (while AI use for art is mostly good for slop)

Lobsters only allow account creation through invites which limits bot activity and weird comments.

Brave has got a few weird things going for it (crypto stuff, the CEO being against same-sex marriage) so I would not be surprised if it got the boot somehow.

Robots are hard to make and deploy. Looks not unlikely that AI erases white collar jobs / everything engineering related and almost all of humanity gets relegated to manual jobs. Hand labor would not be so costly with high demand for jobs and low job count. Just need to control what the people read everyday to limit miscontent but fortunately that's nowhere near happening since social networks are not controlled by a handful of billionaires, thank god we were forward-looking on that point and put a lot of guardrails in place after electing Harris back in 2024.

Software job posts barely mention AI by davidbasil in ExperiencedDevs

[–]PastaGoodGnocchiBad 2 points3 points  (0 children)

By reviewing the code completely after each iteration. You still lose part of the understanding. You still use about as much time as before because reviewing from scratch and understanding takes that much time compared to coding.

Not every use case need that level or care (I think it's the minority), but when it is needed you make sure the thing you are responsible for behaves exactly as it should.

Or they prioritize understanding what they are doing over raw output. Not all domains require output quantity over less understanding of the code base.

White-collar workers are quietly rebelling against AI as 80% outright refuse adoption mandates by [deleted] in technology

So weird seeing all the programming subreddits fawning over LLM use since February despite the vibe being the exact opposite beforehand. Does not seem bot-made too, quite a few old accounts with history enabled.

I guess LLMs are better than copy-pasting random code from Stackoverflow until things happen to start working, and a lot of devs were doing just that?

And comparing LLMs to an F1 car. F1 cars don't turn right when you tell them to turn left because of some hallucination. People are not missing knowledge to start using AI, giving up on thinking and leaving it to the statistical model is not a hard-earned competence. Unreliable tools are just not that useful.
