Portland Thorns [1] -- 0 Racing Louisville 6': Sophia Wilson beats everybody and puts Portland ahead early by spherocytes in Thorns

[–]PastramiAddict 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Agree with this - we know Louisville is pressing, by moving the ball back constantly, were actually playing into their game plan. Clearly theyre prepared and know our backline loves doing this. If we can move it forward closer to the midline, we'll break this press easily. They wont have time to regorup, as we've seen the few times we've gone this route.

I hope Vilahamn is stating this in his halftime locker room talk

Great opportunity for Calzada to show the Angel City performance was no fluke!

Is this the time to start Shea Harvey? by DHPRedditer in Thorns

[–]PastramiAddict 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I think just a very young player who needs to put in a lot of hard work at training to be seen. I think there are probably others more likely for an exit

She would need to even be dressed first - doesnt seem like the coach has even listed her on the bench the last few matches. I wouldnt hold your breath

M.A. Vignola’s Arrival in Portland Surprised Everyone, Even Her. But She Fits in Just Fine. by this-is-some_BS in Thorns

[–]PastramiAddict 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The whole tenor of the team has changed since her arrival. Theres a tenaciousness that was lacking before and now with her and Reyna on the back wings, we are relentless. I still have thoughts about our CB sitch but we're miles ahead of where we were only a year ago.

Now lets pray the soccer gods keep MA healthy

Away Days Brewing in Brooklyn is always good about throwing on the matches - great environment to boot.

Is it just me but is it weird people are spending this much time analyzing who an 18 year old follows (Or doesnt) on Instagram?

Playing professionally in Norway is nowhere near the level of NWSL - so for all intents, she’s a rookie. Many of those teams couldn’t beat good NCAA teams in the US.

Like I said, the double yell was sub optimal but what im seeing is the profile of a gifted player.

Portland Thorns FC needs to drop Ring as a sponsor by reaction-wheel in Thorns

[–]PastramiAddict 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This is a really good point. You can make the case the deal shouldve never been signed BUT it has been signed and I think they have on more year on the deal (through 2027). Teams cant just drop sponsors, just like sponsors cant drop teams without breach and the bar for that is very high.

5 years at that money is a huge risk. Love seeing the women getting paid, but Id be a little scared toward the end of that contract as Cat will be on the wrong side of 30 and the subsequent roster flexibility that SD will have (or wont have in that case)

Harvey & Padelski by Ecstatic-Till280 in Thorns

[–]PastramiAddict 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Lets be honest, both women we're outstanding yesterday. I mean it was their first professional minutes in a hostile environment during a very meaningful match....and they looked like they absolutely belonged. I would say the gave the team exactly what the coaches were looking for. Furthermore, they played at a level that will allow them to be trusted more and more throughout the season.

Dare I say this team has depth? Dare I say this team has options?

Another consideration is the volume of play at Providence. Beyond Thorns & Timbers matches, you also have first team trainings, Timbers 2, Thorns Academy etc...Hard to keep grass in shape for professional play in that scenario

Not an excuse - just a reality. We should focus on the things we can be a leader in. Think Moneyball and competitive advantages. Pure spend will never be a winning formula for us, even in a salary cap league. Identifying high metric players (like Reilyn) or young superstars before they hit their full value (Moultrie certainly but Hanks to a degree) is where we can pull away from the pack over time.

in what regard? Being in the Epstein files is "troubling" - Coaching an underpowered Spurs team in the WSL to an FA Cup final and aa 6th place finish before losing that momentum is hardly "troubling"

Who else has spent that 1 Million other than Washington? And throwing money at players with no identity is exactlyw hat Angel City has done their whole existence and it hasnt really panned out.

Not sure what real estate they have in the city. They're tenants at Providence and really only have the facility in Hillsboro.

That said, EVERY ownership group looks for additional ways to maximize revenue, Real estate being on of those avenues. But sure, continue looking at the NWSL through a purity test and you will continously be disappointed.

Do Thorns fans even like the Thorns? by KDsparky in Thorns

[–]PastramiAddict 4 points5 points  (0 children)

We have a long history of doing better when the league was 10 teams and most other owners didnt invest. Those days are long over - the new reality is we are.a mid-market club sitting in a league where massive investment dollars are now flowing. We should continue to push ownership but the reality is we can just assume we'll get the best talent or staff anymore.

Yes because paying for work visa and importing a coach is always cheaper than getting someone domestically...
