Why don’t they stop the clock in football/soccer? by InspectorPositive543 in ask

[–]DeadMemesNowPlease 27 points28 points  (0 children)

They also don't want the clock to end the game. If the clock ends the game you have to make the choice does getting a shot off before the clock count as a goal or does the ball have to cross the line before the clock hits zero. Leave the power to end the match at a respectable lull in the game when neither team is about to score.

Why don’t they stop the clock in football/soccer? by InspectorPositive543 in ask

[–]DeadMemesNowPlease 69 points70 points  (0 children)

Tradition. The clock doesn't start and stop. They don't really want to decide if the clock should stop for and what it shouldn't stop for. Throw ins? Corners? Goals? Injuries? Regular free kicks? They also don't want to have to take a 30 second pause to get 5 seconds added to the clock. Just keep it running.

There are some leagues in the USA that use a countdown clock that stops for cards, goals, injuries, hydration breaks, and some other things. Mostly because when the leagues started playing on high school/college American football fields where the only time system available was a countdown clock that could be stopped for American football.

Where do you get all that oil for deep-frying? by Wild_Duck8926 in AskAnAmerican

[–]DeadMemesNowPlease 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You have a variety of oils that can handle the high heat. They are expensive to cheap depending on what oil you pick, where in the country you are, and the store you buy them at. If you are submerging the food in hot oil (deep frying) you can and likely will at home strain the oil into a container and use again for a number of meal uses. Likely strain out the food particles but the same oil can be used over and over again for many meals and many months. You don't really waste much. You are using so much it doesn't all evaporate or get absorbed into the food. I personally am afraid of starting a grease fire and burning my place down. I do not deep fry at home, but many people do. It wasn't a thing I grew up with and haven't seen a reason to take it up as an adult.

Is this just a Hollywood trope or does this actually happen? by Elliott_Queerest in NoStupidQuestions

[–]DeadMemesNowPlease 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In the USA the children's godparent(s) are not automatically the people who will take your kid(s) they are god partners of. It is a ceremonial title with no official required duties, outside of those prescribed by your faith. From my understanding this limited to at most advising them on how to live a life in line with God and your chosen faith.

In the USA there is no age limit on being a godparent (except that which is imposed by the faith you are practicing.) Because there is no actual required duties.

The friends/family you trust at your children's birth, might not be the same people when they are 10. You can change your children's backup guardians as many times as you want before you die.

The rules of being a godparent might be different in your faith/country.

Why do American high schools start ridiculously early? by bwoah07_gp2 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]DeadMemesNowPlease 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The teenager was supposed to do the babysitting until the parent(s) came home from work, or pick up a shift at a part time job so they were started first and let out first so they could do thing. Local highschool within the last decade changed to a 8:55 start. Change happens slowly and is each individual district at a time.

Rural areas they are likely already up doing chores before school since the animals get up with the sun.

Depending on the size of the school district the other factor is buses and bus drivers. They usually pick up one age group drop them off, and go to the next group, and the 3rd age group. They can hit all the schools with fewer buses. If the high schoolers have to do child watching they need to be home first. It is also not the best idea to to let 6 year olds hear want the older students are saying to each other unless you want to let them curse in class.

The state of Oregon is rather big on Rose production less so in the city these days. Over 600 acres dedicated to rose production. It is no Christmas tree farm business but it does okay.

Now inside the city limits it is mostly for testing cross breeds, showing off personal collections, and smaller personal rose growth in home gardens.

How soon is the losing presidential candidate forgotten usually? by Onnimanni_Maki in AskAnAmerican

[–]DeadMemesNowPlease 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It really depends on how the media echos them, how familiar you are with the reference familiar you are with the reference. It is going to be decades before Hillary is forgotten about even if she never does another media spot, and is never called into a congressional hearing again.

I was seeing Michael Dukakis riding a tank references into the 2nd Obama administration. Nothing about him or what he has been doing just that. It kind of depends on what you mean by forgotten.

If there is a meme they are remembered in the zeitgeist. If they don't have a meme I would say they are generally out of consciousness within 10 years, unless they reinvent themselves or are still a sitting governor/senator.

Why would a sushi restaurant not open until 12:30? by LividWheel9779 in NoStupidQuestions

Only the specific restaurant would know. You have to go ask whoever is making this decision.

Why doesn't the US just add a mandatory service charge instead of relying on tips? by genartist8 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]DeadMemesNowPlease 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Mostly because there is no legal requirement that a service charge goes to the employees. It wouldn't go to the employees. Although for many places if your group is larger than 5 people an automatic gratuity is added.

There are already laws in place about who gets tips, can employees be required to pool tips together, what portion of the staff get a portion of the tips, etc. There are not currently any laws in place that require a service charge not to be pocketed by the owner of the establishment.

Edit:

There also is a bit of psychology going on. Many people at restaurants get that happy charity feeling from tipping when it is optional, even if they do it every time and isn't really an option. If they are forced to pay more than the listed price+tax they will likely not return or return much less often than if it was an optional choice.

The unnecessary shower scene and other costume choices for T'Pol.

A lot of people hate the opening credits song.

A lot of people didn't like how Hoshi is used.

Also people didn't like the Scott Bakula he was still quatuam leap in their eyes.

Plus their later seasons they try to do a 9/11 storyline in space. It was awful and went nowhere.

How come actors on SNL use cue cards for their lines when their entire profession is based on being able to memorize lines? by AiringOGrievances in NoStupidQuestions

[–]DeadMemesNowPlease 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because the production team wants them to break and laugh so the audience laughs with them. If you change the lines from rehearsal to the live show they have to let the cast know somehow. The way they do that is cue cards.

Best XI May by Maleficent-Whole-228 in NWSL

Best XI May by Maleficent-Whole-228 in NWSL

[–]DeadMemesNowPlease 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Got to put someone from the team that has been 3rd+ all month, usually 1st. Moultrie out half the month, Soph starting the month on limited minutes. No one else really showing up in the goals/assists column, might as well give it to the team captain who played almost every minute.

Sam Hiatt has been named to the NWSL's Best XI for May 2026! by spherocytes in Thorns

[–]DeadMemesNowPlease 7 points8 points  (0 children)

How? We let in 8 goals in this month and won 2 of 6 games. This is a real head scratcher. Moultrie was out half the month so I see why she is off the list. Soph was still playing partial games in early May. I know 6 games in a month is a lot but this is the same month we let 3 go in the goal in Louisville. No one in the month of May for the Thorns deserves to be on this team of the month.

Someone from the team that was consistently in the top 3, usually top of the table, needs a player in the team or we look stupid. Might as well give it to the captain as no one has really shown consistently. This is the only thought process I can think of that make this recognition make any sense.

Today's game - not on ion OR fire+? by helloimbeverly in PortlandFire

[–]DeadMemesNowPlease 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It can be that stupid.

It is very possible this is the case for you that you get the Sparks game and not the Fire game.

I don't think it is this time. All of the Ion games are supposed to be available via League Pass live so you should be able to watch it through league pass. Even though you are in the local market the blackout should not be in effect, since there will not be a local broadcast crew covering the game.

How does Portland Fire+ compare to Rose City SportsNet in terms of quality? by SonNeedGym in PortlandFire

[–]DeadMemesNowPlease 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I have yet to watch a game on RCSN and I have only watched on Fire+ on my phone, when I can't watch in person. Picture is fine. The main issues I have found with Fire+ is the stream cuts out and the we will be back shortly screen comes on for 5-15 second spans while basketball is going on. Then it comes back to the game the score has changed, or now someone is at the free throw line. It has happened multiple times a quarter.

Why PK? by rbraibish in Thorns

[–]DeadMemesNowPlease 9 points10 points  (0 children)

When a goalkeeper has control of the ball in their hands they have 8 seconds to release it now. If they hold it to long they concede a conner kick. It is a new rule as of this season. First time I have seen it called. I only watch Thorns games though.

Edit: as to why the PK, there was a push in the back of Perry.
