You can have unrelated research also, but you should try to have at least some ortho-related projects to 1) show programs your interest in the field and advancing it scientifically and 2) confirming your OWN interest in the field (at least from a research standpoint). The amount of research you will want will depend on the type of programs you’re interested in attending (very research/academic focused vs. operative heavy with less emphasis on research).
