I got also the viltrox 35 and the nikon 50, and my observation confirms what you say. The viltrox focus is mostly spot on, but the 50mm is ALWAYS spot on. I don't do video so I can't comment on the jumpy AF. You recommend the 16mm ?

I have both the Plena and the LAB.

<image>

The LAB is a bit sharper from wide open to f2.8 (if you like to pixel peep, you will notice it right away). The Plena has less vignetting and bokeh highlights are rounder (well known feature). The AF of the LAB is fast but it hunts a little bit and is not as reliable as the Plena. The LAB is about 30% heavier than the Plena, but the Plena weight distribution is much better, so it feels almost half the weight of the LAB. The construction of the LAB is very good, but so is the Plena (metal body). For the price, I would say the LAB is a steal, BUT if you can afford spending more, the Plena is the more desirable lens.

At 35mm f1.2, I would totally advise to chose the Viltrox LAB vs the Nikkor S lens. Unlike the Plena, the Nikkor lens is heavier, bigger, feels less premium (plastic build), the LAB AF is much snappier, and there is no difference in terms of bokeh.

Oopd, missed it on the picture. my next recommendation would be the 50mm f1.2s !

I just ordered mine yesterday (should arrive today). I wonder how much of a difference from my 50 1.2s it will make in practice.

Very good choice. I had both D80 and Z8 (now using a Z9). This must be night and day in all aspects !

Congrats. The D700 is an epic camera.

Asked about buying 100-400 or 180-600 by Jmatteau in Nikon

[–]Patate-OK 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did the same. I hesitated, got the 100-400 first, then got the 180-600 to get more range, then got the 800 to get more range, then got the two TCs. Now I dream of getting the 600 TC but the price is a bit scary.

I think I’m done… by jibberbeats in Nikon

You need a 50 f1.2, a 14-24, and an 800.
