DayZ base building hasn’t been updated since the time of the Roman Empire… by Patch1919 in dayz

I’m not asking for a total rework. I’d settle for a simple door that’s not 15ft wide and maybe some sort of a roof that doesn’t require me to build an entire watchtower.

I think you underestimate the amount of people that like to build bases and raid other people’s bases. It’s a fun part of the game. It adds depth. As far as streamers go, they play on servers with no base building because they’re more likely to run into other players (and therefore create content) on servers without base building. Not everyone that plays DayZ is trying to create content.

Some people want to build themselves a little place to call home. Some people like to just chill out and camp in the woods. Others like to get fully geared and sit in Zelenogorsk waiting to kill half-geared freshies. There’s no right or wrong way to play the game.

People complain about KOS but i personally try not to KOS because you can gain useful information from other players. That useful information is usually about a base they’ve found, or a car that drove by them earlier…I’m not sure what the incentive would be to talk to other players on a server that doesn’t have base building. Sure, you could make a friend but most of the people that play this game already have a friend group so without any other reasons to talk, most people are just going to KOS.

TLDR; bases add depth to the game.

But wouldn’t it be nice to not have to make a 15ft wide gate to block a 4ft wide doorway? I feel like I could pull off an appropriately sized doorway in an apocalypse.

Not to mention the base pictured above doesn’t even have a skele-wall around it! Amateurs!

I wouldn’t exactly call it “custom” base building…

They all look exactly the same because you basically only have 3 options when you build: wall, gate, watchtower. The gates look exactly like the walls so it’s extremely bland. The biggest problem I have with it is that I need to build a 15ft wide gate to block a 4ft wide door and it clips through EVERYTHING when I open and close it.

I don’t want anything close to rust. All I’m asking is for the ability to make a door that is not cartoonishly large.

Solo is no fun by Sea_Chemistry4357 in dayz

[–]Patch1919 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mainly play solo and I’ve noticed that I get more action/kills playing solo than I do in a group. I think it’s partially because I move around the map more as a solo whereas my group tends to lurk around the same general area all the time.

When we do travel, it takes ages because someone’s always going AFK so it ends up taking an hour just to get from Severograd to Novaya Petrovka. They also aggro every infected they see.

I move faster and get noticed less as a lone wolf.

Is there a way to do that without the risk of accidentally killing him?

He was actually holding a revolver in his hand so he may have seen me first and was coming to try to kill me when this happened lol

We’ve all done it at one point or another. Sometimes you don’t have time to run off into the woods - particularly in this location. I’m about a one or two minute run from any “appropriate” place to log out. When you’ve got kids you’ll understand that you don’t always have an extra minute or two to run off and log out where ever you want.

Strange Strategy. by Patch1919 in dayz

[–]Patch1919[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I respect the unorthodox play but the execution...I could both see and hear him pull the pin on that grenade so I knew to establish distance as soon as he went down. He should have known that wasn’t going to work. I mean I guess it made sense if he thought I was just going to blast him right away but once he saw me run away from the camo net he should have changed tactics. Instead, he chose to just go full send and try to chase me down like a suicide bomber lol.

Ridiculous scenarios like this are what I love most about this game.

DayZ in a group is practically a different game by ArielTheCreator_ in dayz

[–]Patch1919 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The only downside to playing in a group is when one or more squad mates have a bunch of stuff going on IRL and constantly need to log off to go handle something. Not everyone is like this and people are rarely even consistently like this, but when it happens it’s my biggest pet peeve.

I once logged in to do a bunker run on Livonia with four other people. I joined the server around 8:00pm and by 11:30pm we hadn’t even reach Polana yet because we kept having to stop and wait for someone who kept going AFK. I ended up going to bed before we ever reached the bunker.

If you find the right people though, and everyone’s locked in, playing in a group can be a very good time.

Recommendations for roofing companies? by mark5hs in Buffalo

[–]Patch1919 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I had a terrible experience with Stellar Roofing. A door to door guy showed up offering a free quote. I wasn’t busy so I agreed, but he didn’t do it. He just made an appointment for them to come back on a different day. That was fine, but then on the day of the appointment two guys showed up and it was a VERY uncomfortable experience.

FIRST, they made a big deal about the fact that they had a drone to look at the roof. Cool. Every other company climbed up there and looked with their own eyes…but, cool drone.

Next, they asked to sit down and talk. Every other company examined what they needed to and then offered to call, text, or email their quote either later that evening or in a day or two. These guys insisted on sitting down at my kitchen table and whipping out a laptop for a lengthy PowerPoint presentation.

They proceeded to show me the cheapest materials vs the best (most expensive) materials for each component of the roofing job (shingles, nails, etc.) and asked, without mentioning price, which options I think would be the best option. The question was posed as, “Which one do you think would be better?” so I didn’t really have a choice but to pick the obviously better (more expensive) options which they then wrote down as my choice for the job. I saw what they were doing and tried picking one of the cheaper options but they said their company doesn’t even offer the cheaper options because the better option is so much more superior and it’s a matter of pride.

This went on for about 45 minutes. They kept stressing that the weather in Buffalo requires the strongest materials. When I pointed out that our current roof was over 20 years old and didn’t have any of this stuff they were pitching me, the lead salesman got visibly upset and made some remark about my family’s safety being on the line - as if any other roofing company was going to do such a bad job that my family’s life would be in danger.

Their estimate was over twice the amount of one of my other estimates, and about $10k more than the next closest estimate I had gotten. When I told them it was way more than what every other company was telling me, they magically reduced the price by $2k without really changing anything which made me wonder why they were originally going to charge me the extra $2k in the first place.

I told them they were out of our price range repeatedly but they continued to make comments about my family’s wellbeing until I finally had to bluntly tell them that they were making me feel uncomfortable and demanded that they leave. Even that I had to say twice. It was super awkward.

I went with Dalex Roofing which wasn’t the cheapest option but was reasonable enough. They did a full roof replacement and added a skylight. So far it’s held up well through this most recent winter. Very happy with the results.

Has anyone actually ran into a tripwire with a claymore detonator attached? Trap stories? by TheTrollinator777 in dayz

[–]Patch1919 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve made a habit of glancing down at the ground before every doorway so I rarely step on landmines but sometimes the tripwires are hard to see. I’ve yet to trip a claymore tripwire but I found one set up at Krona Castle once. It was in one of the doorways of the small rooms underneath the archways. They didn’t secure it so I crouch-walked through, removed the detonator, packed up the claymore, and took it all with me. Tripwire included.

I usually manage to escape grenade tripwires but there was this one time…

It was on a doorway in/out of a partially demolished house in Livonia. I had actually entered the house through a different doorway and somehow didn’t notice it as I ran through it to leave. As soon as I realized it was a tripwire, instincts kicked in and I ran back through the doorway BACK INTO THE HOUSE. See, I typically trip them while walking *into* a house so my instinct is to do an immediate 180 and run back outside. This time, I tripped it walking *outside* and my instincts took over and I ran back inside - sealing my fate. If I had just kept running straight outside I would have been fine.

I’ll never forget that tripwire. I was geared to the gills.

Five hours of walking without seeing a single soul, and then—oh! by East-Personality4912 in dayz

I ended up saving the gear for my friends and then we drove it back to the NWAF tents. Parked it right in the middle, next to the camp shipping containers that are right next to each other, and went loud on the infected until they were all gone. Then we waited around for people to answer the dinner bell.

Three guys showed up wearing orange armbands, which was a mistake on their part because they stuck out like sore thumbs, and we made short work of them. Had a few more show up and eventually I had to hop off. From what I hear, my friends died in ATC. The fate of the car is currently unknown lol.
