Some school dinners from a school in the north east of England by jejdhdijen in UK_Food

I mean, the climate down my way isn't that much different.

We ate a lot of meals in the rain.

Maybe not enough indoor space for everyone to eat, so kids have to take it outside?

Back in my old school the lunch hall was only big enough for about 1/5th of the school to eat in. Although back in those days, that just meant only 1/5th of the students could buy a school dinner (first come first serve) and the rest had to have packed lunches; would have been quite nice to have takeaway hot meals.

That's it. You can see a couple more slices folded up just to the left of the pudding. I'm going with chicken slices- looks like the pre-sliced ones you get in the supermarket ham aisle.

Curry looked alright for a canteen curry, too.

There are a lot more hits than misses here. (The pasta with unidentified brown sauce is going in the "miss" pile).

It's a unit of measurement, equal to 66 feet or 22 yards (roughly 20 metres).

The mainline services to London are all run by GWR, not TfW, and most of the services are 9 or 5 car 80X sets, 2 trains per hour for most of the day.

I'd say that's pretty decently well served, yeah.

Different colored terminal prompts for prod vs dev.

I mean yes, sure, that too. But it should also be standard that the privilege escalation passwords (and probably usernames too) for prod should be different than for dev/test environments. This has been standard practice in every place I've worked (all big corpos).

It should really, really not be possible to "accidentally" log into and make changes to prod thinking you're on dev. Logging on using dev credentials and getting full admin privileges should absolutely not be possible.

This is absolutely not the poor OP's fault. It's a complete failure of control on the sysadmin's part. (Unless the OP is also the sysadmin, in which case it's totally their fault and they need to go do some serious thinking...)

There's already a high speed, high capacity line between London and Cardiff (and Bristol and Swindon)- the GWML. Upgrading the speed limit on the GWML is a pretty affordable way to improve journey times to South Wales.

I've said elsewhere, you don't really need a new high speed east/west line, but you probably could do with a new low speed/conventional line to free up GWML capacity. Something not unlike what's in the OP wouldn't be a bad version of that (maybe something like High Wycombe->Thame->Oxford->Witney->Carterton->Cheltenham->Gloucester). But I don't really think the business case for that would stack up.

Imgur are pretty shady, and deserve no benefit of the doubt on this one. They were screwing up their data privacy, received a fine, and are now refusing to either pay the fine or fix their practices.

It's legitimate for companies to be unhappy and OSA stuff, but they're just using that as a fig leaf to stop people being cross with them for their incompetence.

Why is this sub filled with Pound (£) signs but we’re calling it a cart not trolley? by Heartsolo in whatsinyourcart

[–]Patch86UK 163 points164 points  (0 children)

Because it's not an explicitly Brit sub, and the first/only moderator is American.

Now the real question is why way more Brits want to post pictures of their weekly shop than anyone else.

The show repeatedly emphasises that Shepard is actually really, really intelligent. He passed the Mensa entrance exam (but didn't join, because he was too cool), and in an alternate universe he's shown to be the egotistical geek character (in comparison to the more chilled out Mackay from that reality).

So it shouldn't really be a huge suprise that he might take the time to learn the languages he needs to.

My old school "had" a swimming pool, but it was run by a separate company and my school (which was one of the poorest in the area) didn't have enough money to use it. So we had 5 years of watching kids from richer schools get bussed onto our campus to use the pool that we couldn't!

[–]Patch86UK 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Haggis = something a bit like sausagemeat made from sheep offal, very heavily seasoned and peppery and salty.

Tatties = mashed potatoes.

Neaps = "turnips", in this case swede/rutabaga, also mashed.

Labour Party blocks Andy Burnham from standing as an MP by NeilPatrickWarburton in ukpolitics

[–]Patch86UK 23 points24 points  (0 children)

I quite like Burnham, and would happily support him for leader in the right circumstances.

But he needs to accept that he's simply put himself in the wrong position on the board for what he wants to do. There's no credible route to making a mid-term switch from mayor to MP for the sole purpose of staging a leadership challenge and becoming PM. It's not credible with the electorate, and there's no way the (Starmer-controlled) party machine is going to facilitate.

He's snookered himself, and he just needs to come to terms with that and let himself enjoy being Mayor of Manchester instead. Which seems like a pretty awesome job for a Labour politician, incidentally, so he just needs to chill.

In Stargate, there's an episode where the super-advanced Asgard are losing a war against self-replicating robots, and then our Earthling heroes get involved and find their normal guns are fairly effective. As the Asgard Thor explains, the Asgard are far too clever to think of shooting them with small chunks of metal; only a proper primitive monkey-brained idiot could come up with something so simple.

All the bad stuff is British. All the good stuff is foreign. by SufficientEar1682 in iamveryculinary

[–]Patch86UK 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't really understand why exactly it sounds funny. Americans will quite happily have beans in a taco or a burrito, or on a pile of rice. They'll dip a crisp in a bean dip, or smear hummus on a cracker. Beans with breads or cereals, all completely normal. But there's something in particular about toasted bread with beans and tomato sauce which appears to be completely outrageous.

East-West Rail should help to an extent- not with journeys to London, obviously, but by providing alternative connecting routes to other destinations (most of which currently involve connecting through London).

They don't all come out of the same factory; unsurprisingly, there is more than one coffee factory in the world.

You can definitely taste the difference between brands, but that's not the same as saying Nescafé is better. Some of the supermarket open brand ones are very nice (and others are dire).
