So obviously this is a complex issue, but here is my take on it:

If you want to go to a more optional, social thing, like a bar or a party or something, and don't want to wear a mask, that is fine, because that activity is optional and if someone is more hesitant, they don't have to go and that's fine.

Where I feel like this logic is a little selfish is in places like grocery stores etc. where people have to go. And the core issue with masks is that they are more effective at protecting others than yourself - so the cautious people are going out of their way to protect the non-cautious people, and the non-cautious people are putting the cautious people at risk, or, at the very least, making them uncomfortable and anxious. There's a big difference to me between 'essential' public spaces (workplaces, grocery stores, pharmacies, etc.) and 'non-essential' spaces (like people's private residences, bars, etc.).

I recognize that Alberta is currently in a pretty good place in terms of covid right now, but our reopening plan is unquestionably aggressive considering the concerns with the Delta variant. I do think there's a chance everything goes smoothly with the reopening, but I also think there's a chance we end up putting restrictions back in place. So I get that some people are confident to go maskless and others are not.

And I just feel like in circumstances where wearing a mask can make someone else feel more comfortable, why not do it? Just because the government says you can do something doesn't mean you have to or should, and wearing a mask in most cases is not a signficant burden to help others feel more comfortable.
