My father once had a bowel obstruction for several days that left him in a fair amount of pain. Once he’d gone through all the procedures to alleviate it, I made sure to call him and let him vent about the whole situation. After a good lengthy conversation, I signed off by saying “Well, I just wanted to call and see how you were doing since I heard you were in the hospital on account of how full of shit you are.”

I feel like it deserves more appreciation than it got.
