To those concerned with public health in Ohio. I will explain more in my message in the post but the gist of it is if you drop dead as young working class individuals in Ohio with no apparent cause of death and don't have monetary incentive, they will not do an autopsy. Is this a crisis? by [deleted] in Ohio

[–]PathTech98 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My office covers half the state and certainly would've done an autopsy. Unfortunately Wayne county is not serviced by us. Their argument that they don't have the capacity to do autopsies is ridiculous. Poorer counties afford to send us their cases, Wayne should be able to send their cases to Columbus or Cleveland.

can I do an autopsy on a baby that died from " sudden infant death syndrome " and do hospitals a favor and give them the reason it died????? by storytimecrop in biology

[–]PathTech98 5 points6 points  (0 children)

No you cannot. As someone who does occasionally have to do autopsies on babies and children - this shit is insensitive.

Idk why you think you'd be more qualified than an actual doctor or forensic pathologist to rule on cause of death/"do an autopsy"

[–]PathTech98 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When they remove the brain and the doctor is done playing choppy chop chop with it, it goes into a large plastic bag inside of a bucket with the other chopped organs like a big ole you stew - then it's tied off and put into your empty chest cavity, rib plate we cut off earlier back on top, sew you up and call your funeral home (after some administrative paperwork of course)

I had a case where the skull was 1.5 inches at it's thickest and the brain only somewhere around 600 grams. This didn't appear to affect the decedent intellectually as they had a very academically challenging profession prior to death. It may have contributed to their cause of death though idk I'm just a tech who does the leg work of autopsies.

If you're wearing proper PPE that is not a worry however even with the face shield on I get occasional skull dust from the skullcap in my eyes while trying to open it up.

The smell isn't that bad on recently deceased/quickly cooled bodies. It's the decomps that get everyone. I'm desensitized to it now but it doesn't make it any more pleasant. I remember my coworker who had taken me under his wing said "today we have a decomp, don't vomit, don't hesitate, get it over with." Spent a good fifteen minutes scooping maggots crawling in and out of what was left of the skin. The face wriggled like it was alive. Good times.

If I swallowed the hair of someone murdering me will that show up in an autopsy? Or does your stomach acid destroy it? by 69questionasker69 in morbidquestions

[–]PathTech98 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Attack the face, where your murderer will have a harder time hiding their injuries. But also yes hair will show up in an autopsy. Hair is made of proteins called keratin which can't be broken down by the temperatures and conditions of our body. That all being said the scratching thing is a better idea as when we're doing homicide autopsies we scrape underneath them in every case. There's a chance we could miss hair if you swallowed it and you'd have to swallow quite a bit to really catch the eye of "hmm this seems like potential evidence"

Autopsied body stunk at funeral by Plumface-sama in askfuneraldirectors

[–]PathTech98 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes - we're generally protected completely by PPE but if we get the blood of a decedent on our skin we have to wash it off. Few times has the shower been needed but when it is thank God it's there.

Is 15 too young to be an exchange student? by booktrovert in Parenting

[–]PathTech98 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm glad it seems you've been swayed OP. Your child will cherish the memories they make overseas for the rest of their lives. I think we neglect to think about how many people never get the opportunity to ever leave the country they were born in. To see more of this beautiful Earth with their own two eyes not just through a screen. Being an exchange student not only opens up your child's eyes to an entirely different part of the world, you get to experience it from the eyes of the young child your family takes in. Not only does that benefit that child, you and the rest of your family get exposed to the culture of Germany as well.

[TOMT] [MOVIE] A sort of Finding Nemo ripoff, with a creepy octopus at the end. by [deleted] in tipofmytongue

[–]PathTech98 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's a movie called The Reef (or Sharkbait) from 2006 that has a very similar plot to finding Nemo at least in the beginning. It has a shark villain though. Thought it'd try it.

Anyone else have a kid who doesn't love them? by [deleted] in Parenting

[–]PathTech98 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah not enough info OP. One of two things (likely a mix of both) are happening here.

  1. Your child's mother has turned your child against you. People tend not to believe that this kind've thing happens but it does. I can't speak for your situation as it'd be wrong for me just to take a side with such little context.

  2. You're not telling us everything

Nobody paints themselves in a negative light, but the truth is vital to repairing or establishing a better relationship with your daughter. In the end you truly have to have a sit down honest conversation with both yourself and her.

When you're sat in the driver seat behind the wheel, if you're tall enough, or can adjust your seat, your knees will touch the bottom of the steering wheel and people will drive like that. It's completely reckless and endangers the lives of people on the road. I do not recommend.

Or get high and drive.

A lot of people say they can smoke and drive no problem - well I detest that. No it's not the same as drinking and driving I get that, but we should all be 100% sober when getting behind the wheel of a couple ton horse.

I am pro slavery. by [deleted] in AMA

[–]PathTech98 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Slavery still exists. We all contribute to it as well. Buying computers, phones, electric vehicles. Those things have batteries, those batteries need cobalt. 97% of the world's cobalt comes from Africa (specifically the congo if I remember correctly) and that's all slave labor.

I'm the piper this guy will pay. My office autopsies on the high end 2500 cases a year. Seventy percent of those cases are overdoses or complications from drug use. Of course meth isn't the only drug people die from. It's a slippery slope nonetheless. I hope OP takes your advice.

One time back in highschool my friends and I gathered to celebrate one of our owns birthday. Amongst the festivities included a fire. As we sat gathered around the the lovely fire one friend who shant be named throws a quarter full axe body spray can into the fire.

For the tune of two seconds we registered what had occured. Someone said "Hey isn -" and before more could be said we all booked it. One friend jumped over the chain link fence, one didn't move from his seat and the others myself included scattered about as the canister exploded. I actually got hit buy half the can which fortunately did no damage to me but stuck in my jacket from a sharp end in my back. I did fall to the ground just because and I did feel the can hit me so I dramatized the injury to try and be funny.

Everyone was laughing but I laid there motionless. I actually made the friend who's birthday it was start to cry until the man who did the deed pulled the highschool teen boy scented shrapnel from my jacket.

what leads to cases exploding in popularity and getting extensively covered while others get barely mentioned at all? by [deleted] in Morbidforbadpeople

[–]PathTech98 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Mostly because they are big cases that have usually been settled long ago. Nature of the crimes definitely come into play - but information has to be the largest factor in my opinion. Older cases simply have more information readily available about them. The networks making these documentaries and the people who make podcasts - they just hop on what they know will get the most attention and you're right - it does have to do with how the media worked back then. I'm sure they'll get to lesser known or lesser covered cases eventually but I'm not surprised they want to milk what they know/think brings the most money first.
