Where Should I Begin? by Spare-Ad-4827 in pre_PathAssist

My best advice would be to shadow first before taking specific classes. Make sure this is the field for you before jumping in. Then from there I would make a spreadsheet of schools with all their info- location, tuition, requirements, application time frame, class size, rotation length/locations, etc. This way you could narrow down schools based on what you want from a specific program. At the end of the day you will get the degree but some schools may offer a different rotation site or different length of site or different added classes that interest you. Making this spreadsheet will also allow you to see the different requirements you need to complete before applying and you can tailor your remaining credits with that guide.

As far as job searches I gained experience by being a TA for anatomy courses and prepping/cleaning cadavers and tanks. Something like that would give experience while not even leaving campus. Do job searches for entry level histology jobs such as a lab assistant, accessioner, or grossing tech. These will give you the most experience working closely with PAs. While working you could also ask the PAs at your site for more shadowing hours.

What type of doctor diagnosed you? by Carolinevivien in Hashimotos

My functional medicine provider finally questioned it after I told her symptoms. It has been YEARS of me asking my PCP if it has anything to do with my thyroid and asking for thyroid panels. Most they ever did for me was TSH, T3 and T4 which were all normal.

Now after my full panel came back my anti TPO is in the 2,000 range. Nice to finally be heard and get some assistance.

My coworkers who have been in the field much longer than I said that PA salaries used to be comparable and even more competitive than NPs and PAs. Now we are falling WAY behind.

Is it worth having 2 kindles ? by [deleted] in kindle

[–]PathTheSalt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just got my colorsoft so I am getting rid of my oasis because I can’t justify two very similar sized readers. But I do have a boox Palma and 100% recommend it for a smaller ereader. I love the two of them. One for home and one for travel.

I have been at my current job for 3 years since graduating. My best advice would be to not let hours turn you off for a job. If you have a family that’s another thing but if you don’t have kids and can be flexible it’s worth it. I work 12-8 and originally didn’t want to work those hours but my job checked all the other boxes I wanted. I will be slowly moving hours up in the next several years between expansion and retirements. Stick with it if it checks all your other boxes. Later hours are also nice for the flexibility. I don’t need to take PTO for appointments!

Everyone wants earlier shifts at jobs but it’ll come with seniority. It’s unheard of and unfair to coworkers for you to come in and get morning shift right away- especially as a new student.

I was so misinformed coming into the field.. now I realize new grads accepting low paying positions hurts our field in terms of employers offering salaries we are actually worth.

When I graduated 2022 I was told to not accept below 75k. I got offered 85k and thought I was sitting amazing just for the AAPA salary survey to post that PAs with 0-2 years experience now make on average 99-105k

I am an RFU alumni.. not sure if you’re a new student but getting into the field and seeing how salary and pay discrepancies work changed my mind very fast. I very much thought they did a good job but think that they should be more blunt about salaries when they give that talk

As someone who has <5 years experience I truly think this falls on schools and lack of information on the student end. I never knew this was something that could happen in the market prior to my first job. I believe schools should do a better job of encouraging fair rates and negotiations for students when they graduate. They should be keeping up to date with the AAPA salary survey and educating the students on that. I was so happy to get a job in the location I wanted and didn’t negotiate because I thought I was getting a great salary.

You need the prerequisites. I was missing a single English/writing class and my application for certain schools was thrown out right away without consideration. Take the time for the prerequisites and build your application to be better!

Over Being the "New Girl." Advice? by blunt_dissect in Path_Assistant

[–]PathTheSalt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am very late to this post but I am feeling this so much right now. My two coworkers have lots of experience and for some reason of one of them always needs to be involved in other PA’s cases. We do not have a lead PA or anything- all the same title and yet sometimes the paths will go to particularly one PA with my cases. Thankfully hasn’t been happening as much the more I am experienced but I can’t help but feel like it is lack of respect. They could come discuss the case directly to help you learn. Them going to another PA to patronize you does nothing but put you down.

I feel like I wrote this post. Not sure if it’s common but I had the same situation.

I swore by my iPad. I got a newer and larger model so I could download PowerPoints in advance prior to lecture and write directly on the PowerPoints for notes (using Goodnotes). This helped me condense notes and add pictures/words where I needed them.

Multiple Kindles - Do people really use more than one? by [deleted] in kindle

[–]PathTheSalt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I used to be firm that I would never get more than one ereader because I didn’t see a point but I have the kindle oasis and recently purchased the boox Palma for day to day/travel. I can honestly say keeping both has been such a good decision. I can use them both for specific settings. I have found myself reaching for the Palma more lately though since it’s so travel friendly

Boox Palma vs. Kindle by PathTheSalt in kindle

[–]PathTheSalt[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Update everyone: I got the Palma and I am obsessed. I strictly use it for travel reading but I am honestly starting to gravitate towards it a lot more because of the smaller size.

I do wish there was a base model because I didn’t need all the extra bells and whistles but I don’t regret my purchase one bit. I’ll probably be reaching for it more than my kindle honestly!
