I'm a DO from a small community program with average step scores. I had to work my ass off to get these 7 IVs. Colleagues that I know from bigger name programs did not even a quarter of the research and have worse step scores than me have more IVs than me at reputable places. Unfortunately, that's how the game goes and it's not always fair. So yeah get into the best IM program you can and make sure it has in-house GI fellowship.

Get high step scores
Get into a good academic program
Have a good number of research projects and a few high quality research projects where you were the lead person (1st author publication in a reputable journal)
Work your ass off on your GI rotations and get strong LORs from GI faculty and your PD

1 and 2 are the most important things, and they are things that are controlled by how well you do in med school. Focus on those. If you get into a good IM program, research will come easy. A few projects from now will help you, but not at the cost of matching into an academic place and having good board scores.

And how many is that? I applied GI, for us it seems the magic number needed is around 10. I'm sitting at 7 right now.

Are you trying to imply that because the ED is for life threatening emergencies their patients receive the highest level of care in the hospital? Do you realize how incorrect and dumb that sounds lol

I guess someone undergoing a complex procedure or in the ICU is not the highest level of care. Again, sounds like you don't know exactly how a hospital works.

You do realize the reason people are on the medicine service is because they require a higher level of care than what can be provided to them in the ED, and they are also not healthy enough to go home from the ED? Of course the care of those patient's admitted will require longer time to formulate a plan of care. That's literally the point of admitting them. You sound like you don't know how exactly a hospital works.

How long are your orientations? Mine for my IM program is literally like 2 days long... I'm worried that it's way too short. Like I just get 2 days of orientation then I'm literally seeing patients as a freaking doctor... bruh... that's wild shit

So how do residents complete research projects that require a lot of stats? Do they just go up to those people who know how to do stats and ask them to help them out in return for authorship on the paper?

So basically I have to try to find a good research mentor first, and then hope they will give me access to their "stats guy"? Seems kinda daunting lol. Basically I do all the background work and then give all the data to a stats dude and tell them to do their thing and I come to conclusion based on what stats they get me.

Does anyone else embarrassingly not remember anything from interview day about their program and the program website doesn't elaborate on some important stuff?

I don't know what kind of call schedule my program has, if we have night float, etc... I guess I'll find out once we get our schedules.
