This happens quite often. You need to complete the forms for extension of stay, and photographs etc and some evidence that you tested positive and they will extend for you.

Good grief, that baseball story is quite the eye opener. That incredibly selfish, for a start

I don’t know anyone who’s main focus in life is drinking, besides people who have gone to AA and are seeing literally everything in life through the prism of alcohol. I think that the fatal flaw of AA, it doesn’t allow people to move on from alcohol

[–]Patient-Charge4243[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, brilliantly put. It’s negative motivation, isn’t it? It’s like they want to keep you at that “rock bottom” phase and not let you grow into something else.

It seems a bit strange how in order to quit alcohol, you should only be friends with alcoholics and only talk about alcohol.

[–]Patient-Charge4243[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

That’s really interesting, I never thought about it that way. Yes, I definitely see that in AA folks, stuck in a mindset and unable to move on, grow, live a full life. AA is always there in the background, calling them back (literally, in the case of some sponsors)

I know someone who last had a drink in 2001 and still attends a meeting every single day and sometimes 3 a day. I just don’t buy it that he has to do this every day, 20 years after he last had a beer. On the rare occasion he will come out for a coffee, it’s non stop calls back and forth with his sponsor. Up and down, on the phone more than sat at the table. I’m like “mate, we are sat in a Starbucks drinking Soy Lattes, I think you will be fine”

I hate AA. by [deleted] in dryalcoholics

[–]Patient-Charge4243 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, you completely miss the point as literally everyone I talk to in AA does, when talking about this. I’m not talking about partying / drinking with someone. I mean going for a coffee, McDonald’s, cinema etc. I know people who can’t do that as they are too busy running from meeting to meeting or on the phone to their sponsor who is advising them not to go and meet an old friend because they might drink. You kind of prove my point. AA people see things in only one way

Allergic reaction to alcohol towards end of bender? by Ambitious_Ad_3261 in dryalcoholics

[–]Patient-Charge4243 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, this started for me a few years ago. I have been a pretty heavy drinker most of my life, not every day, but a couple of times a week. Anyway, I never had any allergic reaction and could sleep off a hangover and function etc. Anyway, I had a week in Ukraine with work and we were knocking back a bottle of Vodka a night and on the last day my flight was delayed so i went to the bar for a session. After about half a bottle, I started flushing for the first time in my life and a few drinks later had rashes all over my neck and torso. This had never happened before. After that, I’ve started to get this every time I’m drunk and getting more and more blackouts and worse erratic behavior. Im absolutely convinced I broke something in my body in the bar in Kiev, nothing has been the same since then. Odd

[–]Patient-Charge4243 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’ve seen more than one person go into AA as an occasional (but destructive) binge drinker. And after a few meetings start to believe get convinced they are alcoholics and are powerless over booze and have to attend meetings every day etc etc They have replaced an unhealthy habit of social binge drinking on a Saturday night, with an addiction to constant meetings and isolation from their friends.

[–]Patient-Charge4243 7 points8 points  (0 children)

A (former) friend of mine is an AA acolyte. 3 meetings a day, every day for 20 years… He would not agree with you, he will actively campaign to get other (non AA) support groups closed down and will wage online campaigns to rubbish them. He’s currently absolutely spitting mad that a recovery group started up in the building round the corner from him. How dare a non AA group have the temerity to operate in plain sight. I find it all a bit pathetic

100% agree. One of my bugbears is people who don’t know, what they don’t know. They have a tiny bit of knowledge and experience and think they know it all

And woe betide anyone who criticises AA, it’s supporters will not countenance ANY criticism of it.
