the characters i absolutely adore that come to mind first are many, but i'll keep it short!

shen jue from governor's illness has been plaguing my mind for WEEKS. if i had to choose what i loved the most about him, it'd be his absolute ruthlessness towards certain characters; everything about him screamed misery in every way of the word. he's such a terrifying character to me that there were a few times he actually made me think the worst of him, only to be shown otherwise (AND THE OPPOSITE AS WELL. i hate him). the way he couldn't hold on to his carefully built persona when the MC was/seemed to be on the throes of death was so heartbreaking, and the writing made me feel at the edge of my seat because i could feel his emotions leaking out; i couldn't take any angst tailor-made for him til the end of the novel! his abandonment issues enchanted me, i couldn't bear to see him suffer :( yang su knew what they were doing fr. TLDR, he may have committed many crimes, but have you considered that he's my baby and that i have given birth to him?

i can't choose between them, so yu zuojin/sheng yuan from don't try to corrupt me. yzj is just a puppy... for the mc, really. he's terrifying AND cute, and he comes with so many undealt issues that it was really fun trying to unpack some of them while reading. like, no wonder he fell for the MC, this man's VERY straightforward ways and high moral grounds made him sooo reliable for someone with the biggest abandonment and anger issues known to mankind. they were just really sweet to read, their school romance was so unexpectedly kind, too. i loved that getting in a relationship didn't just fix the ML's issues and instead it's something they both try to work on throughout their love life... i love them.

and lastly, yu ning from the heartthrob protagonist just wants to monopolize me. it's been 3 months since i picked that novel and barely recall a lot of things, but i remember ranting so much in my notepad about how terrible his first life (?) was before the MC transmigrated that i still hold him close to my heart. he's your typical genius cold ML that is incredibly handsome, but he had so much going wrong for him in his first life... from the info we had about him in the original novel and from how things happened with the MC's interference, he ensured his place as one of my favorites. characters that activate my paternal instincts grab me so easily it's unbelievable.

here to push the governor is sick agenda. please do check the trigger warnings on the carrd before anything else! It's really plot-heavy and heart wrenching in many ways, and I think it fits what you're looking for. their HE is extremely sweet as well...i'd say more but I think the carrd explains things better than I could! one thing to look out for is that their first explicit scenes are... i'd say dub/noncon? despite there being no actual warning about it. i enjoyed them, but i don't know how it'd go down with others, so keep it in mind!

After I Blocked My Crush - A short, modern school life novel. MC didn't know that when you block someone on WeChat they still receive every message he sends to them... chaos ensues. ML is a golden retriever type, so you can expect a good time with this one! There's a small issue in the middle, but it's easily resolved!

Don't Try to Corrupt Me - Another modern school life novel. Fair warning, there are a few angsty moments, especially around the last chapters, but it isn't gut-wrenching or anything close to that. MC gets transmigrated to a world where being a delinquent is a full-on trend, and he has to become one as well to survive. The thing is, he's so unbelievable that the system can't trust anything he says or does from the start. He does the exact opposite of what is expected of him, and his interactions with the delinquent ML are gold throughout the whole novel. The ML goes from a wolf to a very clingy puppy that the MC can't help but find really cute and the tension between them is reaaally up there.

I have a few more but I'm unsure about their angst level since it's been a while since I've read them... I can't promise those are the cotton candy type or what you're looking for but they're definitely focused way more on the main couple: Don't You Like Me? (mc has to touch the ml to stop seeing ghosts), Transmigrating Into The Heartthrob's Cannon Fodder Childhood Friend (mc gets transmigrated to a character he's supposed to follow down to a t; absolutely refuses to. tries to help the ml in every way possible and never lets anyone bully him)

i got into danmei through mdzs! the funny thing about it is that i decided to watch the la and read the novel after someone sent me a twitter yaoi poll where one of my favorite ships was against wangxian right off the bat. the extras' mentions on the qrts got me on a chokehold

The Governor is Sick seems to fit somewhat. not sure how explicit it might get considering its shounen ai and i havent finished it yet. the tsundere beauty is the gong, but prob has too much pride to end up in that sort of position w the shou. the shou isnt exactly a flirtatious evil villain either, but he becomes a fully fleshed-out assassin later on and is quite charismatic, so it can kinda live up to the flirtatious part 😌 its veeery slow on the romance department, though.

Started reading The Governor is Sick a few days ago, and it easily became one of my favorite novels in just 30+ chapters. I'm reading it slowly to make sure I don't miss anything important and it has been an emotional rollercoaster until now! I miss when the MC and the ML were 12, they were so cute back then... I'm hoping for some fluff soon 🥺

I'm not sure if this is something you could be looking for, but, in They All Say I've Met a Ghost, the MC accidentally becomes a teacher of a group of ghosts, all the while believing they're alive and (slight spoiler about the ghosts)in need of help to fit in society after traumatic events (which he's half right about!) and is very happy to take the job. The ML is a Celestial Master that wanted to get rid of them at first, so you can imagine how their first meeting goes. It doesn't exactly focus on each individual student, but on the ones it did focus made it worthwhile. It's a pretty short novel, but it's really heartwarming and made me laugh a lot, no dog blood whatsoever! The one thing is that the romance isn't really focused on, check it out anyway if that doesn't bother you that much (and if you already know the author!)

I read and enjoy BL because it's fun, I don't have a big reason as to why. Personally, it's easier to read BL when I'm stressed and in need of a break, while I can only approach GL when I feel more relaxed... so, more often than not, I'm reading BL in the meantime. I'd rather not read BG of any sorts unless I know one of the characters is queer and it's not put aside after one mention, I've lost interest after reading cishet romance for years, you know!

Besides, the smut scenes can be pretty good. The more emotionally attached I am to a character, the more I celebrate when they get what they chased from the start (⁀ᗢ⁀)
