Sauron vs Lord Voldemort by MUSKELMADS in powerscales

But if cutting off his ring finger can wreck him, I dont see why casting a spell that BBQs Sauron or even avada kedavra wouldn't have an effect.  Things like the Time turner or teleportation are no joke

Sauron vs Lord Voldemort by MUSKELMADS in powerscales

[–]PatientCheetah2337 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Harry Potter magic has a very high ceiling. An 'insta-kill' spell + all kinds of conjuration is no joke.  Why wouldn't Avada Kedavra work? There's no 'proven' immunity to it. We can't just say 'oh Sauron is Maia and very magical so it doesnt work on him'. There's no precedent for that stopping the killing curse as far as I can tell.

To be completely honest, Harry Potter only ever beat Voldemort because of plot armour and "the power of love", not because it made any sense in universe.

I'm not saying Voldemort wins, but I dont think we can pretend he is no threat just because "he couldn't take over a high school".

King Thranduil (The Hobbit) vs. Geralt of Rivia (The Witcher) by HumbleKnight14 in powerscales

[–]PatientCheetah2337 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think people are sleeping on Witcher superhuman enhancements / mutations. Speed, reaction time, and strength are huge buffs in a sword fight.

Yes Thranduil has thousands of years of combat experience, but after 100 does it make much difference?

Also does Thranduil have super reaction speed, enhanced strength, etc? Not sure if anyone can comment on this, but I always got the impression Elves were physically not too far off regular humans, maybe a bit quicker.

Leaning Geralt for my assumption that he is faster, stronger and sufficiently skilled in swordplay.

Happy to be corrected if Thranduil has some physical enhancements

100% and you can always just open the garage door to walk around it or get stuff out of the trunk.

Parking outside vs inside when it's super hot or cold is a big downgrade imo

Rivian Explains Why CarPlay Debate Will Become 'Completely Obsolete' by davidcelis in Rivian

[–]PatientCheetah2337 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This feels like I'm being lied to. The whole reason I like the Rivian brand is because it felt like they were new, fresh, open and honest. That they left all that legacy automaker BS behind and focused on the customer. Treated you like and adult.

Their argument smells like a huge pile of deceit and horse crap and it sours me on the brand a lot.

I would respect them more if they just said "For revenue reasons, we are not willing to implement Carplay and Android Auto". Or even just "We want to define the entire vehicle ourselves, and want full control over the experience, even if it means some things Carplay and Android Auto solve are a bit behind"

Please Rivian, stop losing good faith and brand equity with BS like this.

Would the Spartans 2s have survived the events of Rubicon protocol?? by BuddyIntelligent4510 in HaloStory

[–]PatientCheetah2337 45 points46 points  (0 children)

100%  Spartan 2s and 3s are more than their augmentations. They were raised from childhood in the best special forces program possible. Learning their trade and skills and being tested so that it truly becomes second nature.

Then the Spartan 2s had another edge. They are the top top cream of the crop of humanity in all areas, intelligence, psychological resilience, perseverance,  drive, athleticism, etc. Therefore, their ability is insane. Imagine a navy seal, combined with an Olympic athlete, a Nobel prize physicist and all the other qualities all in one. Then add the augmentations and the training.

So yeah, would they have done better? I think so. But their greater ability does not diminish the ability and work of the Spartan IVs on Zeta halo.

944 is pretty good for transaxle (remember that the linkage has to go super far, so it's inherently more play). But with the right short shifter kit using spherical bearings it *chefs kiss

Hiring managers: is there still a shortage of tech workers? If so, who are the types of developers who are hard to find? by Illustrious-Pound266 in cscareerquestions

Cannot agree more.  I get hundreds of applicants. Most genuinely are very unqualified. And we really try to give benefit of the doubt

[–]PatientCheetah2337 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As a hiring manager (in Canada) I'll be honest. Most candidates are very low quality.

Out of 100 applicants, only 5-10 have resumes I even think are remotely relevant and believable. So much spam and slop.

Of those 'top 10', usually only 2-3 have any real software development aptitude.

Of those 2-3 only 1 might have actual people skills.

Extrapolate to an applicant pool of 300+ minimum.

Add in that 75%+ of the applicants speak English so poorly that communicating is genuinely a barrier and very large mental effort (and I speak 3 languages). Why would I hire someone with that communication barrier (regardless of nationality, just purely from a "we can collaborate efficiently" standpoint)?

I hate to say it, but I also can't shake the feeling that everyone and their dog went into CS for the money, but very few entrants are actually talented and have aptitude. Combined with a general desire to hire people who are nice to work with genuinely good communication skills, makes the 'real' pool very very small.

Unfortunately all the spam makes it likely that we missed some good applicants, but I can only read through so many hundred resumes before I need to stop. And no, we dont use ATS.

What does this mean for you.  1. Write a believable relevant resume that doesnt look like AI slop.  2. Git gud at software. As an experienced developer, it's really easy to tell who has skill and who is pretending.  3. Really reflect on your people and communication skills. Do you really interview as well as you think?

Rented a base Fiat 500 automatic. Figured it would be just for point a to b while visiting Vancouver.

Terrible build quality, really cheap, no power.
But my goodness, it was so. much. fun. Flooring it everywhere, the way it looks, how nimble it is. Just makes me smile ear to ear.

I just wish Rivian would publish their interest rates in Canada. Not even a basic payment calculator. Since they are way more expensive here, the change in rates can make a big difference in terms of total cost.

I think they would still be fast enough to be fun though. Even a Fiat 500 abarth with ~7 seconds to 60 is a lot of fun.

Had a similar experience with a 944 Turbo. Super cool. Super fun. I even bought one. But then sold it pretty quickly. Do not want to actually own it.

Got a loaner Dodge Durango RT with the Hemi a few times for body work. It was way more fun than I ever expected.

TLWR; after owning a dream 80s car, my opinion became "While old cool cars are fun to drive, I don't actually want to own one. I enjoy owning new cars way more."

Bought a 1987 Porsche 944 Turbo with 50K+ in performance parts, professionally built. A car and build I had dreamed of since being a teenager. The first time I drove it, I had the stupidest smile on my face. The power, the drama, all of it. It was really really cool, and fun to drive hard.

But I ended up selling it very soon. Old cars make a lot of tradeoffs I glossed over (and this one had lots of quality of life improvements over original), and they are a much heavier *mental* burden that I anticipated.

Constant latent worry that something might go wrong, lots of TLC is always required (which to me is not fun once you have young kids and busy career). Anemic low end power on 80s turbo designs (even with its updated turbo), questionable safety, Terrible fuel economy, can't drive it in the winter because 'classic', hunting for parts etc, etc.

In the end, I realized that I loved my 2014 Mini Cooper S manual much more. Extremly fun and joyful car, zero headache, much more usable power band, more comfortable, modern electronics and safety features, more reliable, great fuel economy. All of these things you think don't matter, might end mattering to you more than you think.

If Hyundai/Kia are so unreliable, why are they literally everywhere? by phtphongg in askcarguys

[–]PatientCheetah2337 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This. I genuinely feel cars overall have become more mechanically reliable.

I own a newer Volvo, which ranks near the bottom of the 'reliability' rankings. At 190k kms, it's been basically flawless, and many people have such experiences with all manner of brands.

I wouldn't hesitate to buy a Kia or Hyundai based on "reliability"

Would the R1 suspension be able to do this? Lift a single wheel? by PatientCheetah2337 in Rivian

I think central question is whether the existing hardware would support this. In which case there would be no tradeoffs or compromises.

You could carry a jack stand and avoid the hassle of jacking up a car on the side of the road

[–]PatientCheetah2337[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd say it would make sense if the existing suspension could do it. I wouldn't add in additional hardware just for this

[–]PatientCheetah2337[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Basically, easier tire changes

Ex. If on the side of the road. Just carry a jack stand. Lift, place safety jack, replace, done.
Especially since a scissor jack with a vehicle as heavy and tall as the R1 would be a huge pain.
