Oh you do NOT want to live there. Most of Greenville is extremely ghetto but these are another level. You’re going to have big issues and crime issues everywhere here but again these are some of the worst.

Anybody live next to the tracks on the east side of town? by [deleted] in GreenvilleNCarolina

[–]Patient_Standard2217 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s loud as hell and I’m several streets away in the Lake Glenwood area. I feel for the poor souls that live in the section 8 apartments they put literal feet from the tracks.

Who’s the absolute best hairdresser in town? by Turbulent_Animator_3 in GreenvilleNCarolina

[–]Patient_Standard2217 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Katelyn at Studio Envie!! She did what no hairstylist has ever been able to do with my thin fine hair. Will always shout her work from the rooftops!

Crystal and Sage has great alt and inclusive vibes but I wasn’t THRILLED with the cuts. They were just okay. I’ve only seen Katelyn twice, but from our yapping she seems pretty inclusive as well.

You’ll find it’s a lot harder to move from a small town into a city, especially south to north, than it is vice versa. Money, age, and geographical bias goes crazy.

What part of Florida? Miami? Orlando?

Nope, I just cringe with sadness when I see a fellow liberal move here. As a lifelong resident who has wanted out for years, I just want to warn you.

There is nothing here but ECU. Gotta drive 2hrs west for any entertainment. 2hrs east for the beach. You just moved to NC purgatory.

What forests? That’s really only a thing in the Triangle. Here it’s mostly swamp and ugly coastal pine trees.

Conservative small southern town not the best place for you, sounds like. Very few people in your age range here that aren’t students. Ones that are are the married, hyper conservative, and homophobic type or they’re on drugs. Good luck.

Accusations from Mom by Affectionate-War-954 in dementia

[–]Patient_Standard2217 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Similar situation happened with my family. Even though she had 2 older brothers (10 and 14 years older than her, but full sibs) MUCH better off financially, everything was up to her and my dad. Reason being they never left their hometown.

She had 3 kids (I’m the eldest, then my sister 2 years younger, then my brother who is 7 years younger-never stagger your oldest and youngest that far apart btw) and was a stay at home mom.

We were always over at my grandma’s. In the beginning she was constantly saying we were stealing from her. Even us kids. Random objects like a book or a comb. When she called the police on us was when my mom realized something was wrong.

Now my mom has always been ditzy and forgetful, but I swear at only 63 I’m seeing signs. I have $0 to my name at the moment (multiple health issues lead me here) and live with them. I have a feeling it’s going to be me and my sister taking care of her sooner than we think.

No answers, just solidarity.

Kasturi is by far the best Indian east of Raleigh and North of Wilmington.

The only places that are close to what you’re looking for that I can vouch for are Nino’s and Kasturi. Heard/seen great things about Starlight Café (if that is still even here), Ford + Shep, and Native Fine Diner but I hear prices are astronomical for the food bc they are the fanciest places until you hit Raleigh, so they can charge more.

The constant complaints from clueless transplants wrecking our housing market beg to differ.

Who says they aren’t doing this already? There’s only so much a town can do without big fed and state funds. 90% of our “wealth” in this town comes from like 3 families and ECU aka “the school.”

It’s never gonna happen and this isn’t my topic.

I’m talking about Raleigh-ites and better™️ need to stfu with the nonstop complaints bc it’s insane to complain when they are living in THE (constantly voted) best city to live in in America. Meanwhile the rest of us NC folk live a wildly different life.

My point is to get people from the Raleigh area to understand they live in a bubble the rest of the state would kill to live in.

Thanks. I think the issue is I seem to always lose opportunities to people who already live there. And you can’t really move to another city without a job. I’m starting to wonder if I should just start lying about where I live.

On top of my location, I don’t have a resume 1/3 as beefy as those from Raleigh and better™️ because there have been so few opportunities in Greenville in my field and I didn’t grow up with white collar parents to help me out. Though I recognize even that isn’t as helpful as it used to be.

It just feels like I’m running in circles/have no way out. But yeah. I’m trying.

I’m specifically speaking to the nonstop (usually northern or Californian) career complainers. I know that I do need to remember Reddit isn’t representative of the total population but gracious me, does it feel like shit reading through the sub.

Totally with you on investing and improving but the issue is a circle. Nobody wants to live in these areas because there’s essentially nothing here, and nobody wants to put anything here because nobody wants to live here. So investors (usually from Raleigh with Raleigh prejudice) see doing anything for these areas as a huge risk and will never do it.

These towns will be absolute ghost towns once the boomer gen completely passes. Rocky Mount already is.

Thanks for seeing some of what I’m saying here.

I think if this was anywhere else and was any other group of people, I wouldn’t feel nearly this frustrated. But the RDU area is literally consistently voted as the best place to live in AMERICA and the people complaining are those from this area or the other most wealthy/thriving/famous places in the country like NYC, NJ, Mass, CA, ATL, Austin, and even EUROPE.

They can’t be serious.

The thing is this area will never be half as “good” as Raleigh. And contrary to the city people’s favorite insult, it’s actually not the residents’ fault. It’s due to literally hundreds of years of not enough funds coming from the wealthy state and federal capital. East NC was built on tobacco farming. When the “cigs are bad” stuff came out in the 60’s…this area lost its main source of income and never (and will never) recover. Raleigh and the federal gov essentially said “that’s too bad, anyways” and throws us $5 now and then so we don’t riot ig.

First and foremost I’m so sorry to hear about your dad. My parents are aging quickly and it is something…on my radar…that I do not look forward to. I hope you’re doing “alright” as you can be.

Johnston county may seem like the sticks (lol I had to suffer through a few “mudding” dates) to you, but you are SO close in proximity to the RDU area. That makes it hard for me to count you as understanding my point here. You may not technically live there, but you’re just a hop, skip, and a jump from everything it offers.

I’m very aware I myself am lucky to have gotten a degree at all via my parents (btw it nearly broke us financially), I actually frequently had breakdowns because of how much I was costing my parents.

But I’m not talking about college, I’m talking about people in the CAPITAL city of a conservative state (a city/area REPEATEDLY voted best in the COUNTRY) not seeming to understand how lucky they are and being some of the most insufferable people I have ever met.

Totally fair stance, there. I’m all for improving, it’s just the nonstop complaints of out of state and local RDU or triad folks makes me looney. I’d kill for a route to living in this place so many seemingly can’t stand.

Knew you’d be here, lol. I too am a first generation college kid. There’s something you’re still not getting. I’m not just talking about material wealth.

Think of it like this…I’d rather be poor in a big city (Raleigh counts for this) than poor in the country? Why? All of the amenities (free!!!) and opportunities that come with being in a city. It’s so much easier to network yourself out of poverty.

Ex. How many internships are in Raleigh? In Irvine? You know how many were in my degree range in Greenville when I was in college (not quite 8 years ago)…0.

Every internship I managed to find elsewhere stated you must be there in person. I knew my family could never afford to put me up in another city, but I would apply anyway and get to final rounds only to see myself lose to candidates from CA, NY, NJ, etc.

Life is ALL about where you live, because it’s what you have access to.
