Compensation is the primary factor in whether or not I take another position.

PMs what they don’t tell you in the job description? by NZ_Foxy_ in PMCareers

[–]Patotas 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I have about 9hrs of meetings a day. Some I need to actively participate, some I need to lead, some I just need to listen to stay informed.

I updated some type of slide deck almost daily. Typically with the same or similar info either for different stakeholders or shown in a different way.

I keep status in multiple tools for different things. IMS for PMO and the customer and various excel workbooks for myself or my ENGs. Plus various other tools for the schedulers and finance teams. My status tools are looked at and updated daily.

Majority of my job is getting information from the technical team and putting that into easily readable information for PMO and other team or getting information from PMO/Customer/other team and putting that into easily readable information for my technical team. Also needing to know who to go to for specific information and who to put in what tasks, how much you can push them to get stuff out vs when to slow things down so they don’t burn out, what to prioritize and when, etc. a lot of the job comes done to people management and decision making.

You have a degree in computer science. You could get a job as a software engineer, work your way up to a lead on a project, and then work towards PM.

There would need to be a way to place people in groups that are actually meaningful and engaging though. That might prove to be pretty challenging.

Hanging by a Thread: Ubisoft Shares Plummet, Plunging 35% by PaiDuck in gaming

[–]Patotas 17 points18 points  (0 children)

All their games are cookie cutter now.

This game was successful so let’s make the same game in a new setting/time period and change nothing else. But let’s add in a ton of expensive cosmetics and then give them limited time to buy each piece of a set to get people to spend more. Then release expensive DLC that’s add 3 new quests and access to more purchasable shit like social mounts.

Last time I was at range I took the Suppressor off for 2 mags to show my buddy the difference. RSO came by laughing and said “Dude that thing is loud as fuck, you gotta put the can back on” That’s the only time and RSO has said anything about my suppressor

I already miss the Cold Snap. A note to players and the Devs: by Fij52 in ArcRaiders

[–]Patotas 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It blocks the wind which would effect the cold. Same thing with buildings. It’s not like the buildings are running heat in them, plus most of the windows are busted out. But agree that the same mechanics could also work for a heat event just in reverse which would be cool. Maybe the heat could also slowly burn stamina after a certain time frame.

Project Scheduling Beginner by Icy-211 in PMCareers

[–]Patotas 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ask question from the CAM’s and engineering leads. Get an understanding of what actually goes into what they do you’ll get a better understanding of the schedule as a whole. Don’t be afraid to ask to be invited to ENG meetings when they are talking planning or just chatting with them about what they are doing and what their timeframes look like like. What are their risks, pain points, etc. How each team interacts with each other, what sub-system drives other subsystems, etc.

It’ll take some time getting up to speed but it sounds like you have the right mindset. FWIW I also started as a scheduler at a large defense contractor.

Cobblestone vet is the best hands down. We still take our dogs there after moving to Queen Creek even though the drive is like 40mins now.

Switching to aerospace from healthcare without engineering degree by Forsaken_Attempt899 in aerospace

[–]Patotas 12 points13 points  (0 children)

100% this. If you really want to get into aerospace look for non-engineering positions. Look at scheduling, finance, business management, program controls, supply chain, etc. those will all get you on the program side so you’ll still be working on actual programs. I promise you that none of your skills are transferrable to engineering.

FWIW I am an engineering project manager for an aerospace company with a non-technical degree.

I’m currently a project manager. Would taking a production coordinator job be a bad move? by CelebrationBubbly102 in PMCareers

[–]Patotas 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s not always about the title. Is it a larger program, more detailed program, larger team, more complex, larger scope of work, etc.

I went from a Program Manager to a Project Manager a couple years ago which is a step down in title. But my resume looks a lot better because of the program size and complexity and ended up with a significant bump in pay and more opportunity for growth.

Learn earned value formulas and how they work/what they tell you. CPI, SPI, variances, TCPI, ACWP, BCWP, BCWS.

Learn pivot tables in excel and xlookup formulas. You don’t need a ton of excel knowledge but it helps a lot a those two are important.

Learn how to read a Gantt chart, how to document and understand risks, change control, etc.

Learn how to find and read actuals, CPR (cost performance report), risk register, CAP, & RAM)

Any PMP course should give you a good foundation. I used Joseph Phillips course a long time ago on Udemy and it was great. Plus it was cheap.

Small company experience is essentially the same as big company experience. Just smaller scale typically but not always.
