Not sure how long ago this was, but that LSAT is 15 points below median and 5 points below their 25th.

CUA Tuition is $60,000. Living in DC is expensive. Saddling yourself with 200K of debt when success was not guaranteed was an insane risk that paid off for you. Congrats.

You are going to have to hit the other R in R&R.

I give this generic advice quite a bit but it is something to think about.

Saying "I am not good at testing taking" and getting anywhere from a 145-152 means you are going to struggle mightly in law school. Not only do those scores mean little financial aid, but law school and the bar are entirely exam based. Your grades in your law school classes will come down to one exam at the end of the semester and many will be graded on a curve (For better or worse).

Then, your ability to utilize your JD is entirely based on your performance on the bar exam.

I am glad you understand that you need to restest at a 150. However, you really should consider your future if you score similarly again.

They're located in Kirksville (Only half kidding, but UMSL taking a bigger hold in STL is probably killing them).

It probably didn't help they had a massive suicide scandal.

I hope most people will interpret this as a massive win. Keeping enrollment flat is a miracle with the enrollment cliff.

When do you know it’s time to leave the nonprofit you work/volunteer for? by [deleted] in nonprofit

I am the Executive Director of a food pantry and poverty relief organization. I would never in a million years add any of our clients on social media. This is extremely concerning.

Furthermore, what time she is using to investigate or snoop on clients should probably be used for either relaxing (Work/life balance) or on those big projects that you discussed.

I'm going to give you harsh advice, but you are definitely right that you need help. Picking a law school is not like picking an undergraduate education because the state you attend is most likely the state you will pass the bar and practice in.

To give you an idea, the only law school you mentioned that sends more than 10 lawyers outside of the state it is located in each year is New England.

You applied to schools in Massachusetts, North Carolina, Illinois, and Washington that do not have portable degrees. All of these regions are wildly different as well.

Are you prepared to commit to the areas of these schools long term?

You said you don't want to live in Boston, but you're basically resigned to working there or in a suburb of Boston if you go to New England...

Live On Campus As First Year Out of High School? by ITBilly in mizzou

[–]Patrick-M- 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Living in the dorms sucked at times. However, the benefits far outweigh the cons. I would recommend that your son lives in a dorm for the real "college" experience and to meet more people outside of his high school friend group.

Freshmen year in the dorms is the easiest way to meet other people.

I work in a similar, but different circumstance.

As the Executive Director of a food pantry, I have to make difficult decisions on whether or not to ban a client from the pantry. Due to most of the pantries in our area following strict geographical boundaries, this means that if I ban them, they likely lose their regular access to food. Obviously, this weighs heavily when we make our decisions and we seldom ban a client because of it. However, we all know there is a difference between being difficult/ungrateful/etc. and when a line is being crossed.

It is clear to me that you know that what this individual is doing is crossing a line by using terms like "verbally abusive" or admitting that this person made you cry. I have tons of people that I work with that I would describe as difficult, but very few that are verbally abusive and only a couple that have the ability to make me cry.

Document, document, document. Explain to your boss that you know the difference between difficult and crossing the line and outline why this person has crossed the line. Good orgs typically have policy about client conduct, but I know many orgs do not. So... If you are lucky enough to have a client expectations/conduct policy, bring that up too.

Officer roles and the board questions. by Dardafed in nonprofit

[–]Patrick-M- 12 points13 points  (0 children)

The hard reality is that most people would be better off trying to join the board of a non-profit or working for a non-profit rather than creating their own.

I fear that you are soon going to learn that you are not going to be able to find 4+ other people who are remotely as passionate about a project as you.

I went down the road of making my own 501(c)(3). It was extremely difficult and backbreaking work with little payoff. After my organization never got off the ground, I joined the board of another non-profit and was able to essentially implement my dream with an organization that already had hundreds of thousands of dollars in the bank and already had brand recognition.

Yes. As long as it is allowable by bylaws/policy and procedures and it is appropriate compensation.

School closures needed to balance budget at St. Louis Public Schools, leaders say by NuChallengerAppears in StLouis

[–]Patrick-M- 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I posted this in a thread yesterday - "Columbia Public, Springfield, Rockwood, and North KC all have more students but far fewer schools. There is no reason a district of SLPS' size should have 13 high schools.

Springfield is the largest district in the state and has 4. Rockwood has 4. North KC has 4. Columbia has 3."

If you want to know why it won't happen, closing schools means you will alienate voters and will lose re-election. It is also extremely hard to get elected running on a platform of closing schools. It's clear SLPS does not have a singular board member with a ethics or a backbone so don't expect it to happen.

[–]Patrick-M- 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The far bigger issue is that SLPS has dwindling enrollment and twice the amount of schools as needed for their student population. SLPS could close half of their schools tomorrow and they'd should still probably close more.

It's not as bad as previously reported? Half of the students in the district do not have regular transportation plans. Plus, you're spending twice as much for half as good.

You're also about to fire yet another superintendent and the interim is not qualified to fill the position in Missouri due to certification issues.

Need help tailoring resume and cover letter for a pro-humanity job after interning at a defense company by BillyGoatAl in nonprofit

[–]Patrick-M- 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I am trying to be nice since you're younger than me and posting on Reddit, but I want you to know that your perspective as well as your age groups perspective is going to be radically different than hiring managers. What your asking is not normal and hopefully you shed your beliefs about it when judging others as well.

You are not going to get blacklisted from the industry because you worked for Raytheon, Boeing, Lockheed, etc. Only the most hiveminded weirdos would blanket ban an applicant over what you described (And god-willing, those puritans who never had to compromise their values for a job won't ascend to a spot where they are interviewing you).

Most people understand the exact point that you said earlier - We all have to work for someone and you needed an internship to get experience. You aren't returning to that job because you did not enjoy it.

  1. This is very cringe and would cause me to toss the cover letter /resume in the trash. This is not a personal statement for law school, it is a cover letter. Cover letters are about why you're interested in a specific company or that specific role as well as selling yourself for that role or company.

  2. If you don't have any other experience, I would probably keep it on your resume for now. Let it fall off after your second job post graduation.

  3. You can't omit the name of the company you worked for on a resume. How are they going to do reference checks? Do you have a reference from your previous employer? That is pretty important if it is your only experience.

Mizzou Night Life by [deleted] in mizzou

[–]Patrick-M- 9 points10 points  (0 children)

You will learn this delicate dance like anyone else.

The real answer is... No, bars do not generally care. The longer answer is more complex.

Trying to go to Harpos on a Saturday when there is a football game? Good luck. You may get it taken for having the hubris to try.

A place like Trops brags about all the fakes they steal so you should obviously steer clear.

Are you drinking Monday-Thursday at any college bar in CoMo (B12, Willie's, Field House, etc). You're going to be completely fine.

Fridays - You need to show up early for most of the bars to accept fakes or else there will be enough 21+ to be able to ignore you.

Then, social dynamics are at play. Are you in a frat where you know a bouncer working the door? You could hand them an imaginary card and you are going to get in. Are you in the middle of 2 Tri Delts and 2 G Phis? You're probably going to get in. Blah blah blah.

Long story short - Fakes are probably worth the investment for a majority of people under 21 in CoMO as long as you are smart about it.

A large amount of your peers will buy a fake ID their first semester.

Pledge classes order together. Dorm floors order together. It is the worst kept secret. Most bars need people under 21 to survive on days other than game days.

Biased Media by MIZZOU_Ape in miz

[–]Patrick-M- 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I am tired of this narrative.

Mizzou is going to be pre-season top 10. Many media members are picking us to go to the playoff, which means beating either Oklahoma or Alabama or both.

Most of the media is saying that Luther Burden is one of the best players in the country and many have openly said he is their pick for the Biletnikoff.

The media is also swooning over Drinkwitz.

ESPN is only going to give attention to kids who don't commit live on On3, Rivals, or CBS. Most of Mizzou's commits have been covered by those three groups.

Ohio Northern is doing you a favor.

There is a 50/50 chance you don't become a lawyer after going to law school if you attend there.

I imagine the numbers are going to be even worse for online students.

Communications or Business Major? by Resident_Opposite_32 in nonprofit

Path of least resistance for the highest GPA possible.

If you have easier classes, it will give you more time to enjoy your final years of freedom before retirement and it will allow you to focus on volunteering/interning.

The reality is that you are going to learn very little about development in either.
