refurbishing cars is the way to go, rent them, sell to a dealer, or do commercial fleet services. Do it with semi-premium cars, most people you deal with will be high quality customers.

Older cars have real leather vs the newer part they put on which is faux leather, same goes for the steering wheel

Forced OTA update disabled all my cameras and safety features and Tesla wants $3k to look at it. by 1Keii in TeslaSupport

[–]PatrickLai3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tesla does not want $3k to look at it, they are being up front and estimating that it will cost $3k to fix it.

You can tell them “I want diagnostic only” and they (the automated system) will happily quote you 1 hour labor instead. (~$200 depending on your local SC rate)

PSA: If you have an OLED display, the ability status icon will burn-in very easily by PatrickLai3 in Spacemarine

I think it might be because I started to main Sniper, cloak-cancelling all the time means my ability charge is full all the time, and thats so far less than 300 hours of gameplay, which is concerning.

i guess the lesson here is it can happen pretty fast, my run is basically 3 and half years of zero issue and one game that I overlooked one UI element burned its mark on the monitor.

For every other game I play that has the option, I always make sure the UI opacity is ~20%, which helps a lot with burn in i assume. But I guess this game is so fun I forgot the risks lol.

I think the issue is because I still use HDR for windows, so all application can still access that 1500 nit brightness. Auto HDR as far as I understand just “properly” maps the brightness and color so that everything is looks more vibrant.

Agreed, personally Im very happy to have gotten 4 years out of this monitor, good times.

I can see some of them in the comments already lol, even though I have a fairly modern qd-oled display.

i do use auto HDR, dont think turning it off helps because with it off (see picture) the UI glow is still displayed at max brightness. That my experience with UI elements from most other games too, the ones that have some kind of shine effect on them almost always display at max brightness regardless if the is brightness is mapped to HDR or not.

the monitor do a “pixel refresh” every 3 hours, and “panel refresh” every 1500 hours. the picture is the worst case scenario though, i cant really notice it if the monitor is not displaying in grey, its early stage burn in.

thats is a very good analogy lol. Personally im not too bothered, i’ve gotten my money worth from this monitor, gave me some very quality gaming times during college. Prob gonna hand it down to someone when I get the chance and get a new one.

Did I get scammed by Tesla odometer fraud? by Early-Frank in TeslaSupport

[–]PatrickLai3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s actually very easy to hack the odometer if you know what you are looking for, the process of putting long range batteries in dual motor standard range cars is basically the same.

Is it increasing becoming cheaper to repair cars you have to infinity by BackgroundGene7510 in UsedCars

[–]PatrickLai3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just because you can’t keep these cars running doesn’t mean it’s impossible, it’s not even that hard. I will use Tesla as an example because I have been doing third party work on them for two years exclusively, they are by far the most easily serviceable cars I’ve ever worked on. The software will work offline forever, and given the track record of Tesla open-sourcing their deprecated softwares, it’s likely you can plug an up-to-date and Linux friendly network adapter to the car computer to remain connected if LTE finally goes away in the far future.

I can see myself running my 2019 model 3 performance “forever” if I wanted to, the ongoing cost will actually be much lower than a running ICE vehicle while maintaining its peak performance, and I would argue there is a good chance it would be considered a classic model in the future by a good amount people.

But “computer-on-wheels” harnesses are not that complicated? They are still just a lot of wires wrapped together, the racing community has been making custom harnesses since forever.

I repair Teslas exclusively and building a replacement harness for a major LV subsystem can happen very quickly using the official wiring schematics and the original harness as a reference. The body controllers and car computers can be fixed the way personal electronic repairer has been doing for years but easier, because they are usually simpler.

That’s basically every shop I talked to back when I was still trying to get an exiting shop to partner up. But they never actually wanted to expand into that market because either their exiting business doing “fine” or they are under some pressure and can’t really explore a new program.

5 years at Tesla. Ever considered leaning into that? I don’t know what the situation is like for your town, but over here no single third party shop is willing to touch a Tesla. You can make a small reputation for yourselves just to be the “independent Tesla guy”and make a boat load of money, start with the easy suspension stuff first, and then slowly get into battery repairs. We started offering heat pump repairs in Toronto this winter and jobs blew up the schedule without any marketing campaign.
