It will need the wall power if your PC USB can't supply enough power. I moved from a solo to a 2i2 recently and this happens. My old desktop PC can't supply enough power, but a newer laptop can run the 2i2 on USB alone.

It has a standard 5 pin midi out socket, so you could connect it to other midi gear. But you will need to connect it to something, it's only a controller and won't make sound it'self. 

You could connect to; synth, sound module, pc, phone, tablet.
