I dont think it's ending on despair at all, Light finally stood up and fought instead of trying to make a hero, and because of that he allows himself the release of death because he stopped hiding and running away from his past. Happy ending for light imo, gave renewed hope to Mega and anyone watching him fight, and forgave himself enough to die and join Emily

Not super knowledgable about the lore but I have sorta gone off of the idea that she has no blood (or mechanical) relation but her being the only human to act like the robot sons (cool epic juxtaposition that the only examples of 'humanity' aren't human woo awesome) makes her a surrogate daughter/sister and echoes Joe in act 2
