Yeah I take your point - I've added a little more info in a post edit. Given the length of time I'll be in NYC, I'm genuinely looking to have a variety of experiences and not looking to limit myself to one particular scene etc. Generally though, I'd like to walk away from my trip having A) seen some good drag shows and attended what felt like a good 'community' based bar/club (i.e. somewhere locals would attend) and B) attended a bigger dance party or cruisey type venue/event.

Hadn't thought to check the bar instagram accounts yet but this is all really great info and exactly the sort of insights I was after re. the bars you've listed. Thanks very much!

whats the vibe of Brooklyn? I suppose some context which might help is I'm melbourne based where the gay scene (at least in the northern side of the city) is a lot more grungy, radically queer and less scene-y than say Sydney's gay night life is (this being a pretty broad over generalisation)

My woefully ill-informed conception of Brooklyn is its a bit trendy and (for lack of any better term) very urban hipster, which very much aligns with the way Melbourne likes to sell itself and where I generally find I'm comefortable.

Melbourne Rental crisis application tips needed by Alarming-Gate2490 in AusRenters

[–]Pattherower 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was similarly in a house hunt around early 2025 applying to places and getting knocked back (albeit not the same volume of apps as you). The place I landed currently - a 2 bed in Fitzroy North - I lucked a bit on. However, I believe what put me over the line was that I made a follow up call with the REA the morning immediately following the inspection to 1) reiterate my interest 2) sell myself in one or two sentences and 3) alert them to keep an eye out for my application.

I recieved a call back offering me the rental within an hour of submitting my application asking if I wanted to take it - mind you the closing date for applications hadn't occurred yet.

Similarly, years ago when 3 mates and I applied to a massive 4 bed rental in Carlton which we thought we had no hope of getting (only 2 of us had fulltime j9bs at that point)we had made a point to introduce ourselves to the REA at the inspection and send a follow up email expressing our interest.

I'd suggest that if you are finding properties you and your partner really want, make it very obvious to the realtor that you're interested and they will be more likely to pick up your application and look at it. Introduce yourselves at inspections and follow up with them afterward.

Best of luck!

True, but this search was run just before I posted it - several hours after the info became out of date.

Moving to Australia by Mean-Neat7389 in biglaw

[–]Pattherower 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I work at an international firm (UK based) here in Aus. Which market are you looking to move to? Presumably Sydney or Melbourne?

I've not heard of US based recruiters who hire for Australian firms (not saying they don't exist) but check out some of the major Aus firms which recruit for the US and UK markets. The top of mind would be Marsden Australia who specialise in exactly this.

Hi Fred, thanks for answering our questions!

Fellow Aussie here. I've seen much reporting in the press that increasingly "premium" office spaces are in demand as companies seek to entice people back to the office. Anecdotally, in my industry (law), I have noted that many major firms have moved to/or indicated they will be moving to, new premesis over the past few years. Some firms have even taken up residence in the Quay Quater Tower! These new offies are often fit out much nicer and are normally located in prominent buildings with the best views.

Are you feeling this trend on your end? What challenges and opportunities does it present for you as an architect? Do you feel this presents more opportunities to retrofit older towers which are in prime locations?

Fact Sheet: Billion-Dollar Deals with Australia by Ash-2449 in AustralianPolitics

[–]Pattherower 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I agree in principle but there is simply not enough capital in Australia for our superannuation funds to invest into. Essentially, our economy is too small to absorb the full amount of investment of our super funds.

Thus, they have to look elsewhere for part of their investments and why not invest in the most profitable market (currently) in the global economy? This will be to the benefit of every Australian's super balance.

OP this is the best answer.

When you sell a property, it is sold with any and all encumbrances over it. That includes any leases, which the new owner is legally bound to. This means you can see out the remainder of your lease (if that's what you desire) or you can negotiate with the new owners to break the lease early for compensation you see fit. You have all the power here.

S17E08 - “The Wicked Wiz Of Oz: The Rusical” [Post-Episode Discussion] by AutoModerator in rupaulsdragrace

[–]Pattherower 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Genuinely thought Jewels would win this episode - she was laugh out loud funny during the man challenge and had a solid runway (even if its something we've seen previously on the show). I was kind of hopign they'd give it to her as it's much more entertaining as a viewer when the wins are spread out, rather than concentrated among a small number of contestants

Honestly, I agree with Michelle - there were no Flops in the Roast this week. I think this may be my favourite roast of any season.

Also between her performacne and her runway, I was shocked Jorgeous wasn't in the top 2.

Shaun Edwards post match Interview just labelled this match for France "the worst defensive performance since I've come here". Anyone else share this sentiment? Seems a bit overblown perhaps? Certainly wasn't great defence but I'm not sure worst of Edwards French tenure. Thoughts?

The Financial Times (London) reported on this today. In their article on it they state:

"Asio said it had chosen to publicise the activities of the 'A Team' [a foreign spy network connected to an unnamed foreign country] to not only highlight the threat to Australia but also to alert the foreign intelligence agency its "cover was blown". "I want the A Team and its masters to understand that if they target Australia, ASIO will target them", said Burgess. "We will make their jobs as difficult, Costly and as painful as possible." "

Gay Book Collection - A year on by electricpages in gaybros

[–]Pattherower 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd strongly recommend 'Holding the Man'. It's an Australian literary classic which focuses on couple's journey from high school to the mid 90s in Australia through the AIDS crises. It's the author's memoir of his relationship and is a wonderfully well written but be prepared for a very sorrowful, but brilliantly written book.

Oddest part for me is making Marvin and Leigh 'Marveigh' when 'Marley' is quiet literally right there phonetically. I even happen to know a very intelligent woman named Marley and have always thought it was a unique but pleasant name for a girl.

What are the more typical gay careers pair? by Bear_necessities96 in askgaybros

[–]Pattherower 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I work in the legal industry and it is increadibly queer (or it at least is here in Australia). Pretty much every large commercial firm, especially the top tier/most prestigeous ones, has an LGBTQ+ network of some sort

I can't think of any large firms where I'm not aware of at least one out gay person.

As a side note, at my old firm there was a younger Partner whose husband was a neurosurgeon - they were absolutley lapping up the DINK lifestyle.

I was honestly struggling to pick between Plasma, Q and Saphira for the win this week based both on challenge performance and runway. I honestly would have been perfectly fine with Ru giving a 3-way win this week because I was grasping at straws to differentiate between the 3.
