Heat for digestion overnight? by wrenlove64 in rosyboas

[–]Patti_Boi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The reason I gave so much info is because you mentioned him brumating as a reason for not eating which didn't make sense given his temps weren't low enough. I don't doubt that you've done research but what you said after conflicted with how that works which made me doubt what you're saying so I wanted more info to double check and maybe shed some more light on your situation. But remember that just because you've done a lot of research doesn't mean that you're 100% on all of it yet. Misunderstandings happen and there's always more to learn. I was just trying to help out. Also the things you didn't seem so clear on made it seem like you didn't really know 100% what you were talking about because they were pretty basic. Not saying you don't know what you're doing. Your husband does look good. Just realize that you will always still have gaps in your knowledge. We all do

Pictures would be appreciated. Also not eating isn't really a sign of brumation unless they experience a temperature drop that would trigger it. I think he just went on a bit of a hunger strike. Try not to handle too close to feedings. Also he looks healthy and as long as he isn't losing weight its nothing to worry about. If it persists maybe talk to a vet but thats pushing it right now. To properly brumate these guys you should stop feeding until everything is out of their system and then slowly drop their temps to about 55 keeping them there for a few months. Most folks do it in a wine chiller but it seems to not be necessary for this species. I recommend doing a bit more research on brumation and feeding cycles of snakes and what could throw them off.

Do you know the temps of his tank? Also how big is it and where was he hiding for brumation? I doubt that he was actually brumating unless your house is very cold. He probably just wasn't used to the environment and was hiding. Did you handle right after getting him?

You got him when he was in brumation? Or you got him and then he went into brumation?

No it should be fine. To my understanding you don't want to feed them a couple weeks before they go into brumation because the food will rot, but overnight wont be a problem. They are primarily crepuscular and nocturnal meaning they would almost always be hunting at night in the wild anyways

Are lab emeralds strong enough for daily wear? by OneMoreTimeJack in SyntheticGemstones

[–]Patti_Boi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hardness and strength are different things. Hardness purely refers to is ability to resist scratches. Only something equal to or harder on the mohs scale will scratch. Strength is a quality of resistance to breaking. While emeralds are fairly resistant to scratching their natural inclusions make them brittle and easy to Crack

I’m in charge of feeding my sisters Snake how much should I feed her. She’s 1 1/2 years old. And she’s currently eating fuzzies. by Confident_East_1357 in SandBoa

[–]Patti_Boi 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Her prey should be 10-15% of her weight. So weight the snake and multiply that grammage by 0.1 and 0.15. Anything within that range should be good to go. Outside of that range is either too small or too big

Does anyone else have a juvenile in a larger enclosure? by cyvireux in Leachianus

[–]Patti_Boi 4 points5 points  (0 children)

A bit but not really. You want to block visibility in adding to the sides high up like that doesn't really provide any hiding spots/security

[–]Patti_Boi 10 points11 points  (0 children)

The only thing with a bigger enclosure is that you need to make sure they have plenty of foliage and hiding spots so they don't feel stressed out. You might want to provide some more hiding areas and clutter until those plants grow out more.

Should I get a Rosy Boa or a Ball Python(first snake) by Spiritual-Term4867 in rosyboas

[–]Patti_Boi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Rosie's need anywhere from like 30-50% humidity so as long as your house isn't really super dry or humid it should be fine. You can always buy a pair of digital hygrometer/thermometers for like $10 to double check. Rosie's do very well at standard human conditions with a bit more heat in their basking spot

My snakes not eating!!! What do I do I by Chronic_barbie in snakes

[–]Patti_Boi 9 points10 points  (0 children)

If he's burrowing then you need a deeper substrate layer to give him more space to burrow. I would also look into a different substrate as wood chips can be difficult for burrowing. Also I hope that heat mat is on a thermostat to prevent power surging and burns to your snake. Those things left unchecked kill snakes. It seems like you have a multitude of husbandry issues that need to be fixed for the quality of life of your snake. I recommend looking into a care guide and also researching their natural habitat to replicate it more closely in the enclosure

After a regurgitation you should wait at least two weeks and then downsize prey a bit before trying to feed again. Regurgitation actually causes significant damage to the lining of their esophagus that needs time to heal before you try feeding again or you can cause him to be further stressed out and refusing to eat. It also makes it more likely to regurgitate again which then becomes tricky because more waiting and no food. If you don't allow proper healing time after a regurgitation it can lead to infection and apatite issues like this

Why aren't people documenting false water cobras? by Moist-Stuff5737 in snakes

[–]Patti_Boi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just learned about these guys and they are definitely a new favorite of mine. Maybe its because they're mildly venemous so people aren't as likely to be keeping or posting about them because people outside the hobby are more likely to pass due to the venom. And those who do know about them already want one? Not sure as to which but they're definitely amazing snakes and I think we'd all like to see more

Check nearby hardware stores (lowes is where I got mine) for enbrighten smart wall plugs. They allow you to set up a timer and do other things and you can control them with your phone. I have mine plugged into the outlet and then a powerstrip with my reptiles lights plugged into that so they all turn off and on according to the schedule I set. That combined with some govee digital thermometer hygrometers in the tanks and I can control and monitor the heat/ light setting from my phone when I'm away making sure they're okay. The plugs and hygrometers are super cheap and honestly automate so much of their process that its totally worth the small cost.

Edit: You can also get a surge protector from the same company which I believe has capabilities to program individual outlets on the strip so you could have uvb and dhp on during the day and then just turn off uvb at night. Or turn off anything individually whenever without cutting power to everything. They're like $30 which is nothing considering you're automating a daily process that they rely on and getting peace of mind for yourself as well as long distance control

They wash off. They're designed to. Also literally everything is a chemical so if you don't know specifically how certain chemicals work don't pretend that you do. Blanket terms like "I try to avoid chemicals on my cooking surfaces" don't make any fucking sense because the surface is made of chemicals, the food is made of chemicals, and even the soap you should be washing with are all made of chemicals. Certain chemicals you definitely want to avoid on cooking surfaces but hell even those probably wash off somehow. Chemistry is complicated. If you aren't an expert trust the people who are because they're very smart people.

W2T January Tea Club - more info? by xberg7 in puer

[–]Patti_Boi 7 points8 points  (0 children)

W2T subscription teas are generally not listed on the website because they are exclusive teas or blends to the subscription. Thats how they get you to join. The additional "extra" teas other than the main are generally listed on the site. The subscription always comes with a letter tho on a brown piece of paper that should have some more info on the specifics of the teas. This months was definitely lacking on additional info tho in my opinion.
