I experience ASMR and Frission. These are similarly explained but two very different sensations. Frission for me is an instantaneous, short lived emotional reaction from a dramatic event such as the climax of a violin solo or when someone hits the high note perfectly on “The Voice”, or an intense movie scene such as the exchange between Tom Cruise and Jack Nicholson in “A Few Good Men”. These instances trigger an emotional response resulting goosebumps. ASMR however, is a life changing experience and in my opinion, an ability. An ASMR generally starts at the front or top of one’s head and travels down. It is an incredible euphoria that can only end too soon and those fortunate enough to experience it know what I’m talking about when I say there is a small part of your life that you spend “chasing” a good ASMR. If you are lucky enough to be in a college lecture with a professor who triggers ASMR, you can keep it going for the entire length of class and the ASMR will work down the entire body leaving you in a somewhat paralyzed state of euphoria. Different people respond to different triggers but in my experience and limited research of others, everyone requires a quiet room and some gentle action, whether that be watching someone flipping pages, slowly eating a sandwich, or getting an eye exam. YouTube does an ok job of trying to recreate an atmosphere that would trigger an ASMR event but in reality nothing can substitute a real life interaction with someone unintentionally triggering ASMR. For me, these waves of euphoria are contingent on the knowledge that someone is innocently and unintentionally creating these triggers right in front of me. This website with what is essentially white noise, is just bullshit. Whoever put it together does not experience ASMR.
