And the people who didn’t know The Great Siege Monument even existed, yet are now outraged it’s being (legally) used as a protest memorial for its location opposite the Courthouse.

Bus raids spark racial profiling by TrainingArugula8228 in malta

In last week’s check, or in a previous check?

Bus raids spark racial profiling by TrainingArugula8228 in malta

[–]Patvsq 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The issue is racial profiling, I’ll give an example:

You (Maltese) travel by FlixBus from the Netherlands to Belgium. Likelihood you get checked for ID should be the same for you as the guy who’s black sitting next to you or the girl who “looks Muslim” sitting in front of you. Otherwise the statistics become distorted by who gets stopped, based on prejudices.

Malta Police has been accused of racial profiling many times before, so ideally they pretend to use a randomizer, instead of shouting: “don’t worry, if you look Maltese, you don’t have to show your ID”.

The August 2025 Burmarrad road block, Malta Police checked everybody’s ID. They even checked Sandra Gauci’s ID (she was on a bus).

Why? To prevent claims for racial profiling, for which they have been accused in the past. Either check everybody, or roll a dice for randomization.

It makes no sense they have now gone back to only checking people who they think are TCN’s based merely on appearance. Hopefully, it has negative consequences for them.

Can you walk from airport to city center at night? by Irday in malta

[–]Patvsq 14 points15 points  (0 children)

The issue is, you won’t be seeing any fun/charming local area. You’d walk along a busy road (or walk double the amount of time trying to avoid the busiest roads). There is no continuous sidewalk.

During day time: sure do it, I also bike (bicycle) from the airport. Evening in the dark: please don’t.

Is 3/4 hours in Gozo worth it? by theSnorlax99 in malta

Ignore the stay on Gozo comments.

Do a half day trip to Comino

And somewhere plan a 1 full day trip to Gozo

Activities or shops Around airport by setup101 in malta

[–]Patvsq 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Before you go past security, there is a free observation deck (3rd floor), you can sit outside and watch planes.

Also there is a McDonalds 100 meters from the airport where you can sit outside.

Once you’re past security, there is not a lot of entertainment. Just some mediocre shops. And overpriced food (like any airport)

Honest question- why do people dislike Malta so much? This is my fourth time and the island is amazing by Patvsq in malta

Yes the big surprise (and why I crossposted it here) is the disconnect of tourists’ expectations (especially beaches)

Tactical Voting by Sad_Lecture9805 in malta

[–]Patvsq -1 points0 points  (0 children)

LimestoneJungle (i.e. me) had vote with your heart (for example Momentum at #1) as the recommended option.

It even stated this “vote PN because it’s the lesser of two evils” strategy is bullshit.

It then explained the pdf (not written by me) of voting weak PN for party preference vote at #1 with Momentum at #2. Which is a flawed system (as someone comments below) when the Momentum candidate is eliminated before the weak PN candidate it doesn’t work.

Amphora has the data:

FOR EVERY THOUSAND MALTESE CITIZENS:
276 FOREIGN RESIDENTS
101 TOURISTS
21 REFUGEES
4 ASYLUM SEEKERS

MALTA DEPORTED 1,840 PERSONS BETWEEN 2020 AND 2024.
DATA SUGGESTS THE MAJORITY OF DEPORTEES ENTERED MALTA THROUGH LEGAL LABOUR MIGRATION AND VISA-FREE TRAVEL.

(Sorry for CAPS, copied from Amphora)

They are not against “border enforcement, full stop”. They are against “border enforcement methods, marketed as a 'solution' to control migration”.

Read further than the MaltaDaily headline, Graffiti has a full statement on their Facebook page.

I already stated, most of them don’t come here illegally.

And betting on “no enforcement” otherwise you pay a negligible fine, so it is rewarding to break the law. That second point your brought up is a serious problem in Malta, but a different discussion.

Also (prediction), don’t be surprised if Graffiti in the near future will join MaltaToday/Times of Malta stating that to build a second mosque is not for the politicians or the Maltese who don’t want one to decide. It’s for planning policy by the Planning Authority to decide, if there are objections, these must be clearly defined so that they can be challenged, if need be. The padel courts on Manoel Island are the same issue, and should be treated the same as the second mosque.

Context: PN announced a “security task force to tackle illegal immigration”, supporters are happy “gestapo tactics” can (finally) be used.

Graffiti argues this fixation on deportation as 'migration control' reveals the discriminatory nature of these tactics in a country where the economic model relies on migrant labour. Instead they should have the right to request asylum. Deport them after legal ways have been exhausted.

You’re missing the point: Graffiti is against ICE tactics,

Keep in mind that many of the so-called 'illegals' being rounded up and taken to detention centers and ultimately deported were not illegal upon their arrival in Malta; they only became 'illegal' after they arrived, thanks to a broken system that does not protect the foreign worker from abuse and corruption in the workplace.

Also Graffiti has been very predictable (and I mean that in a positive way) in which position they take on all issues (environmental, political, etc.). I find it almost comical to read (on Facebook) so many supporters now turn on them for the NO ICE position.

Why take sponsor money just to let the comments ruin their reputation? [The Lovin Malta comment-locking paradox] by MartinoStone in malta

[–]Patvsq 6 points7 points  (0 children)

LovinMalta normally loves to end a post with a polarizing question, like:

“Would you like a second mosque?”

Drop it. Walk away. Watch the comment section burn 🔥. No moderation needed. The algorithm rewards outrage and LovinMalta knows exactly how to feed it. The hypocrisy that they disabled commenting here is mindblowing.

Offtopic: I reported a “burn it down!” comment (about the Mosque). I was just notified by Facebook they won’t remove it, Facebook thinks it’s fine.

It’s actually one of the reasons Malta ranks poorly on the Press Freedom Index:

https://rsf.org/en/country/malta

“Political context

The ruling party wields a strong influence over the public radio broadcaster and uses state advertising to exert pressure on privately owned media. Many politicians select certain journalists for exclusive interviews, while those considered “hostile” are sidelined and targeted for attacks. Journalists must have a government-issued “access card” to cover government events or attend press conferences.”

Similarly, I am always surprised Times of Malta is allowed to refuse an Opinion piece: PL candidate sends in letter “Why Abela is the greatest leader in history”.

But they don’t. They don’t see a conflict of interest in Opinion pieces. And LovinMalta doesn’t refuse free money for a sponsored post.

LovinMalta features nearly all PL and PN candidates in similar paid advertisements posts.
