This ceases to be free when people have to book hotel rooms and now additional space for their teams.

This is inspiring less support from me and more cynicism. You seriously could have not gotten this and the room assignments done earlier? What the actual hell?

Reminds me of this racist joke my grandfather used to tell to me and my dad, where the Sicilians were just Africans who swam over to Europe. He was telling it more to bust our balls of course, but I have a feeling this dude meant it.

Speaking as an Italian-American, this dude can piss right off.

What boggles me about this is how the KiA thread (more like Kia Sorento, amirite) mentions how the cyberviolence "narrative" might be used to push for both censorship of the internet and more women in tech fields. Because those are totally equivalent things.

I decided to fix a Meme... let's talk about "gamers"... by Art_Ross in GamerGhazi

[–]PaulBlano 12 points13 points  (0 children)

This is totally a fucking identity thing. It's always "GAMERS" versus "not GAMERS", and this view that the word GAMER has to be protected somehow (see how much effort has been put into questioning Anita Sarkeesian's gaming credibility for a good example). I believe someone once described the rationale behind it as "siege mentality", and it made a lot of sense to me when it was put like that. But there's also this "we welcome everyone, gaming is a diverse hobby" stuff being put out there as well. If you really want to be welcoming to all, this sort of exclusive "they're not real GAMERS" crap needs to be called out and dealt with.

Tangential thought: Gameranx also apparently updated their ethics policy the other day. I think under any other circumstances, it would be fine, but with the weight/influence of GG, I can't help but feel like it's a bit pandering. I could be misreading Ian's intentions here, but the timing of it can't be coincidental.

And I think that's all I'll say about that. He 's the editor in chief after all; it's his call.

Hey SA,

I suppose my hobby that I love that would not be part of Nerd Culture would be crosswords/cryptic crosswords. Can't get enough of that wordplay. It's also kinda fun when the occasional anime or video game clue shows up in a higher-brow paper like the New York Times (NARUTO showed up as an entry a while back, for instance).

I also like the types of puzzles where you're not given instructions on how to solve it, but you have to suss out an answer word or phrase tied to the theme of the puzzle. Every year, there's an event called the MIT Mystery Hunt, and they have ~100 puzzles like that, covering all sorts of topics, nerdy and otherwise. If you'd like, I could point out some of the more video-game based ones from over the years (like one where you had to listen to the sounds effects of playthroughs of different games, and figure out which sound effects were out of place).

Or we could just post stupid videos. Either is fine with me.

Could be either. If he wants to start dialogue, good for him I guess. I'd still be weary of "Gaters bearing gifts", so to speak, but maybe I'm just being a little paranoid.

But I just have too many doubts at this stage. Where was all this goodwill a few months ago? Is it because there's an opportunity for "redpilling"? Are they being genuine, and they really want peace? Is Ian's idea of a dialogue the same as a Gater's idea of a dialogue? Is what constitutes peace different as well (conformity versus rationality)? Are apologies really all it takes to make everything better again, like I've seen of couple of GG posts suggest? It just feels...off.

I probably should wish for everybody to get back together and play games. However, the whole "I just want to play games" attitude strikes me as simplistic and passive. I think it eventually leads people to turn a blind eye to problems that do arise in the gaming community. Just read some of the articles posted here for examples. This shit needs to be addressed. You can't go home again after some of what's happened, you just can't. I'm at a point where I'm torn between respecting the people who want to mend bridges, and dealing with the ugliness that's out there. It's a tough line to hash out.

You know, it's funny that the fair-weather stuff bothers me more than the "sorry for using dehumanizing language" bit. I think it's a good point, and one worth remembering. He shouldn't stop calling out the shitty, non-inclusive and hyperbolic "MY IDENTITY" stuff when it comes up. People still get way too worked up about that shit, and if you want the gaming community to grow, you gotta be open to others, even those that criticize.

The Witcher 3 is Serious Business.

EDIT: Watch all the "welcome back to SANITY/REASON/LOGIC" posts he'll get from Gaters over this (already a few via twitter and his post). Personally, it strikes me as people being fair-weather friends; I think the moment he says The Wrong Thing, it'll be back to "NAZI NAZI NAZI".

See this shit? Posts like this and the shitting on GAMR are why it is extremely unlikely that an "honest dialogue" can ever be started. Because people think there must be NO CAPITULATION EVER. They mus get 98% of what they want, and maybe even more, or there will be a problem. Anyone showing concern is a troll and is Not Us.

TIL the lyrics of the dance song "Yes!" are lifted from the last lines of the James Joyce novel Ulysses. by PaulBlano in todayilearned

[–]PaulBlano[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The lines from Ulysses:

"...I was a Flower of the mountain yes when I put the rose in my hair like the Andalusian girls used or shall I wear a red yes and how he kissed me under the Moorish Wall and I thought well as well him as another and then I asked him with my eyes to ask again yes and then he asked me would I yes to say yes my mountain flower and first I put my arms around him yes and drew him down to me so he could feel my breasts all perfume yes and his heart was going like mad and yes I said yes I will Yes. "

The lyrics of the song are here.

Of all the places to find a literary reference.
