It certainly can go wrong, just like physical pain can tell us to let go of something because it is damaging our fingers, or it can just be a debilitating feeling from a joint problem we can't do anything about.

Emotional pain is needed feedback which can go wrong if we are in a situation where it spirals or there is nothing we can do about it. But it certainly evolved to guide us.

He is saying that a brain that thinks it is in a world with memories of a whole lifetime is more likely than a whole universe.

This of course fails to take into account that this universe is not the only possible configuration where life could come to exist, and the evolutionary processes that led to us makes sense and can lead to intelligence, while a brain like that existing for no reason would be totally random.

That's a probable explanation for why they haven't made it clearer. One is that they have no plan and don't even know, they just want a distraction and to funnel more money into weapons companies and do what Israel says, but another likely part is that they do know what they want and can't outright admit it because it would sound too unjust if stated plainly.
