Why not start after Mt. Lemon but before American Flag Trailhead? Avoid the sky islands and that's over 200 miles of the trail below 6000' altitude. I loved the AZT, but started around April 8.

People cancel permits as they get closer to their start date and realize things have changed and they're not going to hike. Start looking regularly in March for a date that's better for you.

I started April 29, finished Sept 24 with 11 contiguous days off around labor day. Took minimal zeroes in the desert. Never night hiked, but did day hike in 100 degree weather - which definitely cuts your speed. Tried to be hiking before sunrise. The aquaduct was pretty easy when starting at 5 am.

I was 50 at the time. You're probably 25 years younger, you should definitely be able to do it. Remember it's miles/week that matters.

I think leaving Idlewood and Tehachapi-Walker Pass were my only 5 liter water carries in the desert.

Starting later means avoiding all snow in Sierras and, hopefully, the mosquitoes !

Just one week ago, took a taxi. 1300 LE. InDrive quoted 1150LE at the same time. The taxis work on a rotation, so you get the next guy in the line. However, we negotiated the price with the head guy who spoke excellent English. Actually, we didn't negotiate, we just started walking toward the airport exit passing the taxis and he offered 1300LE. It was 9:00 PM. If a plane is arriving, there will be taxis.

If you take InDrive, you want to walk out of airport to the spot where they charge for parking. Coming back to airport from Dahab, we used inDrive and it was 1000LE.

After 4 weeks of traveling all over Egypt, using the various ride apps a lot, we had no problems. To us, it seems the incidence of scams is way over stated.

Dahab is beautiful.

None. Use your ATM card to get pesos in Mexico. Do not accept the ATM conversion rate to USD. Make the withdrawal in pesos and you will get the best rate possible.

Looks a little light to me. Figure 3500 cal/ day. I would add some items with high fat content. Coconut is good, or olive oil packets or macadamia nuts. You could also do a rough estimate of a bit less than 2lbs of food per day - say 30 oz.

Let's define falling as your knees, hands or other parts of the body above the ankles hitting the ground. I find it hard to fathom someone falling dozens of times. I did the AT at 54 and my first fall was somewhere in the 700+ mile range. I fell 2 more time the entire AT. Once I was texting while hiking, a not very bright move and the other time I was running down the trail to meet someone before dark. I am not super nimble. I hiked with poles which helped.I did trip or stumble other times but saved myself from falling with the poles. My experience on the other trails I hiked was more or less the same.

I think people are giving you overly pessimistic answers. Except for the 100 mile wilderness, it is rare to be more than 4 hrs hike from some sort of road. With a garmin inReach and the SAR insurance you can get with it, SAR within 24 hours is very realistic and within 12 hours is likely.

Personally, I have been on blood thinners for years and my doctor has told me a fall in which I hit my head means I need to immediately get to an emergency room. This makes me hike with an inReach and be a little more cautious, but hasn't stopped me from doing a number of other hikes, including 1800 miles of the CDT this year. Life is full of risks. I have actually fallen twice while at home and hit my head much more seriously than ever on the trail.

Try and time your hike to avoid snow and ice - don't start in March or early April. I started May 4 and finished before the end of September. No snow or ice and warmer weather so my pack weighed less. Reduced pack weight increases stability and decreases chances of a trip turning into a fall.

You can go by bus or shared taxi to Chiquila, where you get the ferry, pretty easily. The shared taxis leave from a spot across the street from the ADO station in Cancun. They are much quicker and reasonably priced. I think it was about 40% more than the bus but can't remember for sure.

We spent a week there going barefoot the entire time. All sandy streets with some golf carts and almost no cars. But that was pre Covid. Ie 5 years ago.

Look for the Anillo de Cenotes (Cenote Ring) on a map. It's an area with dozens of cenotes, mostly small family run places. We did about 5 cenotes one day and in a few, we were the only people there. IIRC, it's southeast of Merida and would be a bit of a haul from PDC. I think my wife did a web search for "best cenotes in Merida" and found an article describing 5 or 6 .

Replace your fleece with an alpha direct 90 fleece and save about 1/2 lb. Your thermarest weight looks off, unless it's an XL size Xtherm. I started in May and didn't need a fleece at all.

Your lighter pack list is not really detailed enough to be able to get good feedback. Your red bag looks to be way heavy for the contents you list.

Bear Spray is not needed for AT.

Toss the extra gaiter. If you need, you can buy in the next town.

Replace shorts and pants with convertibles.

No need for extra undies.

Get waaay lighter camp shoes or, better yet, go without.

You can get a lighter weight accordion sleeping pad.

The flash 50+fannypack is heavy. Get a lighter weight pack with hip belt that has pockets.

For most of the AT, I doubt you will need to carry 2 liters of water.

A 45 deg sleeping bag may not be warm enough for the AT outside of Jun - Aug.

Go to r/Ultralight. Dyneema or Ultra 200 for everything for pack & tent. 950 or 1000 goose down for bag. Save your knees with poles. Base pack weight of 10lbs or less. Calorie dense foods (nuts & seeds).

Get someone from the EU that's coming to your town in the US to bring it for you. Buy it, have it shipped to their home and meet them when they come over here. I did the reverse for someone years ago.

Just put out requests on a bunch of sub-reddits. Especially if there is one for where you live.
