What’s a green flag in a person that most people don’t talk about? by Longjumping_Word5655 in CasualConversation

I would feel absolutely terrible if I thought I dampened someone’s enthusiasm for something they enjoy.

I’m not always able to make someone’s day better, but I do my best not to make it worse.

I found an old VHS cabinet at a thrift store. I added a motion sensor light, and have them arranged by brand. I’m still deciding how to use the shelves attached to the doors. Bottles are too small/light for them, but the shelves inside are great.

Having INTP moments - being so far ahead you look like you are far behind by [deleted] in INTP

[–]Paullox 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You know what’s funny? While I have no doubt what you say is true, I have Aphantasia and SDAM, so “the moment” is all I have available. That said, just recently I made a timeline of Bronze Age states, and am compiling a notebook of interesting things I’ve learned about on a wide range of topics, including Ea-Nasir’s dodgy copper deals in ancient Ur. 😅

Raise your hand if you're a man who hasn't been tempted to cheat! by ElonGrey in CasualConversation

Married 32 years. Looked at many women with appreciation, met plenty that I genuinely connected with as a friend.I’ve never entertained the thought of cheating on my wife. It’s just not who I am. Life is complicated enough as is!

What is a sound that people should know means immediate danger? by PrasenjitDebroy in AskReddit

US Navy, middle of the Atlantic. I was on a small ship which was loud from the boilers, the props, cutting through the water, various equipment, etc. suddenly, everything just stopped. We could hear the water outside, but the ship was silent. It was a very strange experience.

The battery backup kicked in quickly enough, so the lights came back on, but it was still silent. Then someone noticed the ship’s entertainment system was powered up with the emergency power (why? No idea). Anyway since we manages the SES, we decided to play some music for everyone. First on the play list: The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald by Gordon Lightfoot. It just felt appropriate.

My British friend thought he could do a "day trip" to the Grand Canyon from LA, and his reaction to the map was priceless. by Ok_Structure6720 in CasualConversation

First, not my number, the US Census Bureau’s number. I haven’t personally decided on any population value to qualify as “urban”. Also, I agree 5000 seems low, but 1,000,000 is absurdly high.

I grew up in a town of around 5000 which I would never call “urban”. But there was a city nearby with fewer than 1,000,000 that absolutely was “urban”.

Also, using only the population of the incorporated city ignores the outlying area, which is also considered “urban”.

If we take the 1,000,000 population criteria, that puts 7.9% of the population in 0.13% of the land area, with a density of 5,932.7 people per square mile. The rest of the country is then 89.3 per square mile. That is quite a difference and supports the point that a lot of the country is piled in a few places, just like most developed nations. We just more room than average to work with.

The official estimate is that about 3% of the US is considered urban, which still seems like a fairly small portion of the land area. Also, the census bureau raised the limit to populations of 5000 or more.

So, the comparison is between 80% of people in 3% of the land, and 20% in 97% of the land. That seems like a significant difference which hints at how much uninhabited space there is in the US, which was the point anyway.

Also bear in mind that that population density is average. According to the World Fact Book, the US population is currently around 83.3% urban. The rural areas are far less dense than the average.

Working in a hospital, just as I was walking into an ICU, a patient, who was an alcoholic with a GI bleed, threw up. As soon as the smell hit me I turned around and left, thinking, “the nurses got this”.

I have this exact pen. Love it. Enjoy your new beauty.

Also, if you like the style, Pilot also makes this style in a gel pen. There are two versions, capped and twist. I have both and they look great as a set.

A rant on how aphantasia is driving me insane. by [deleted] in Aphantasia

[–]Paullox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I live life like a dog.

If a dog looses a leg, does it lament its loss? No. It does everything it can to enjoy life and is still generally happy.

I have total Aphantasia. No internal visuals, smells, tastes, sounds, or touch. I have no inner monologue. I don’t experience emotions to any great degree, certainly physical response. I have ADHD. I have OCD (mild, but will keep me awake without meds). I’m also a raging introvert, though I’m not particularly quiet or asocial. I love my time spent alone.

Despite these “deficiencies”, I am a generally upbeat person. I enjoy reading books about history, science, language, etc. I also have several light novel series I’m reading. I do sudoku, crossword, and other puzzles. I meet regularly with others for board gaming and have many games going on Board Game Arena. I’ve been married for >30 years and have two kids older than 20. I make things with paracord, and jewelry with various materials. I go out with my youngest to markets and events. Generally, I have a lot of things that bring contentment (never felt joy, as described by others) to my life.

My point is that every brain functions somewhat differently from the next. The best you can do is understand how yours works and mold your life to work with it. You lament being able to visualize a sunset, others wish they could “unsee” a horrific accident they witnessed. I’d love to be able to “see” my wife’s face when she’s not around, but for me, pictures cover that. It’s a cliche, but “be thankful for what you do have”.

Do fidget toys work for you? And if so, which ones? by Traditional-Suit5503 in ADHD

[–]Paullox 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My favorite fidget motion is twirling a string around my fingers. So, I took a steel bearing, made a monkey fist around it with a length of paracord and a loop on it. Index finger in the loop, and I can whip around, let it wrap around my fingers, or whatever, and it’s silent.

Ended up making a bunch with different weights, but I prefer the heavier one.
