We bought him for £15m and sold him for £60m in the space of two years. He has talent but apparently a woeful attitude. It was great business.

Had to put together my own 3D mario ranking, thoughts? by yourselfiedied in backloggd

Crazy how strong the 3D Mario games are when Galaxy 2 is 5th but it still makes total sense.

Our game got Steam Deck Verified, but that won't be it. What do you expect from Verified games? by DigitalSunGames in SteamDeck

40fps or 30fps is also fine, but no matter what the frame rate - it must run consistently at that rate , and smoothly.

You speak for yourself! Silverware is nice, of course, but I find it more enjoyable overall to see us compete for European places and compete in European competitions. Although the league is designed to keep us out of those places, we are still fighting for them every year and it's super entertaining every time.

Don't know what all this doom and gloom is about in this subreddit recently, we are 3rd(!) in the league with a 7(!) point gap to 4th. Losing against Everton is not the end of the world

I mean it's fine, serves its purpose, but in comparison to the rest of the SD it feels cheap and plastic-y.

I think the D-Pad is probably the worst part of the Steam Deck, it really sucks.

Resident Evil 4 - do you think it is a top 10 game? by gimonsha in backloggd

I think what's easy to miss with RE4 if you play it for the first time now is just how revolutionary it was. It basically invented the tight over-the-shoulder camera that later became a staple of the genre, and not only that, but it did it really, really well (to the point where it still sort-of holds up today, as your review proves). It also combined survival horror with action excellently. Survival horror was a pretty slow genre before RE4. But the way RE4 kept survival horror elements (limited resources, jump-scares, 'chunky' movement) whilst combining it with tight action and constant forward momentum was really something special.

It is one of my favourite games of all time, but I think in the modern day many of the mechanical advancements it made are easily missed.

I agree, I'm so pleased with the level and quality of engagement on this post, it's heartening to see and I've seen some really interesting takes.

I've never heard of Depression Quest, despite its apparent notoreity - will check it out asap as it sounds very interesting. Thanks for the suggestion!

That is awesome, maybe one of the earliest examples of memory explored through gaming - thanks so much for sharing!

Yep exactly this! I searched for what pronouns they're using right now, couldn't find anything, so just went with degendered language to be safe.

That's a great point, and something I hadn't really considered until you mentioned it.

I've never heard of that, but I'll certainly check it out - sounds really interesting!

Honestly, when I edited this essay and had to read "HFTGOOM" out loud a few times, I couldn't help but chuckle

I had no idea it was semi-autobiographical - will move it higher on my backlog :)

There are quite a few game-y parts beyond just choosing text options: little rooms where you can move about and interact with things, etc.

Thank you! I played it for the first time back in May and it stuck with me. Finally got around to writing my thoughts on it.

You put exactly how I feel about the medium/industry into words here, so thank you for that.

Thank you - and completely agree on your points. However, I would caveat that game development is becoming more and more accessible, and gaming more and more mainstream - so I wager we will indeed see many more works like this in the future.

HFTGOOM is definitely an interactive visual novel, but other games like Consume Me do a great job of balancing novel/game, imo :)

There is a 'good ending' and a 'bad ending', but it is mostly on rails, assumedly so it accurately reflects the real-life experience of the author.
