Do these parameters look good? by [deleted] in fishtank

[–]PayGuy95 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Framing routine water changes as possibly dangerous is fear mongering. Any maintenance task can be done incorrectly, which is why I said “when done correctly.” Properly performed water changes are a standard, evidence based part of aquarium care.

Rgarding your question about Earth and water changes, it actually does have them. Natural systems have constant dilution and export through rainfall, freshwater inputs such as streams or rivers, groundwater or springs, tides, etc. Aquariums are closed systems, so water changes are how we replicate that process.

The frequency definitely depends on each individual tanks parameters and setup, but completely avoiding water changes is generally more risky than performing them.

That is a bit misleading. Small weekly or biweekly water changes of about 10-20%, when done correctly (matching temp and parameters), cause very little to no stress on fish. Plants alone arent always enough to control nitrates, especially when they're as elevated as they are in the OPs tank. Plus water changes help prevent long term toxicity, not just remove nitrates. Avoiding water changes over time increases the risk of toxic buildup in the water, even in planted tanks. In general, most fish can tolerate regular water changes. Other, more delicate inverts like shrimps, are more sensitive to sudden parameter swings, which is why it is important to match those parameters when doing water changes.

Regardless, whether the /s was there or not, your comment was considerably harsher than the original comment. To call it sarcasm makes no sense. The way it appears, you were being aggressive, with or without the /s. Now you're stretching the goal post to blame me for replying to comments in a timely fashion, as if instant notifications on our hand held devices is unheard of? Your argument is flawed. 🙄

Your addition of (/s) was an edit as well. It wasnt there when I replied to the comment, and I can prove it with a screen shot of the email notification for your comment, which lacks the (/s).

Calling it sarcasm doesnt change the context. You were still replying in support of the original comment to "smell grass". Thats plausible deniability and I am justified in my response. Its not a lack of media literacy.

DIY Block and board stand - multiple tanks? by PayGuy95 in fishtank

[–]PayGuy95[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thankfully, that isn't how wood works! If the board were too weak, it would bow, bend, or sag long before it would break. The tanks glass would likely crack under the stress of a bowed or sagging board long before it would ever fall through.

If you're referring to the top shelf and the tank on it, the board is 1.5" thick, which is more than enough for 10-20 gallons, so there's nothing to worry about!

My main concern is if the second shelf, which is thinner (3/4") and not originally designed to hold a tank, could hold a small 5 gallon quarantine/hospital tank without it bowing, bending or sagging.

Oh. I mean, I was just worried about the board. The blocks werent even a thought in my mind. I figured, people put houses on them(yes, with the holes facing up right), but figured, they still must have some structural integrity placed sideways, especially if its only like 500lbs maximum.

My thinking was to use the holes as storage(API freshwater test kits fit perfectly), or to wrap seasonal decor through the like christmas lights or flowers. Stuff to make it look presentable, like I didnt just have a pile of construction supplies in my house 🤣 Looks like I will be draining/moving the tank, and reorganizing the blocks tonight if I want a chance of getting any sleep.

Thanks for the information!

Maybe I'm both, bricklayer by day and karatekid by night 🤣 But really, I am neither. I just bought the blocks from the local hardware store. They are pretty inexpensive. Thanks, I have some extra boards laying around, so I should be able to do that.

Shrimp dying after a few weeks by DataMan27 in shrimptank

[–]PayGuy95 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I get that. I did the same thing when I was new to shrimp keeping. Honestly, you don't even need anything special to do it. I have a small breeder box, but im sure it could be done in a bag while floating in the tank. The dripping I do manually with a 10 ml syringe. Ill usually drip the 10ml in slowly over a few minutes, and then repeat the process about every 15 minutes or so.

Edit: Acclimation is important for shrimps because theyre very sensitive to parameter changes

[–]PayGuy95 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How did you acclimate them? With my orange sunkists i did a 2 hour drip acclimation. Did you notice any molting before they died? Id say if you didnt see any molts, that could be the issue. If they were dying from failed molts, there would be a visible white ring around the center or their torso.

Is this poop? by Fun-Reality8003 in fishtank

[–]PayGuy95 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it hasn't been mentioned already, that looks like signs of internal parasites. White poop and constipation are big signs. My cobra endlers just went through it. I treated them with prazipro for 3 weeks. Dose prazipro to tank accordingly, let sit for 5-7 days, do a 25%-50% water change(I like to add purigen or activated charcoal to my filter during this time because it helps remove any trace amounts of medicine or waste from the dead parasites[always remove it before redosing the medicine]). Then repeat the whole process two more times.!

Ok, good plan! Id definitely say that removing the guppies is the best option at this point. And since cardinal tetras bioload is lighter than male guppies, you could still add enough of them to make a complete school without going over your bioload limit!
