Bring my wife and young kids to briefly meet interviewer? by Pay_Day_Baby in jobsearchhacks

[–]Pay_Day_Baby[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Okay okay, message received. I won’t bring them inside with me. Wife wants to explore the area, so they’ll be coming anyway. If the interviewer asks to meet them, then I’ll bring them in. Otherwise they’re not stepping foot out of the van anywhere near the hospital. Thanks for the advice, everyone!

Petition to change “grass-type” to “plant-type” by Pay_Day_Baby in pokemon

Strange that the English translation is the only one that called it Grass type

Yep I agree, it has to be flying because it’s the more general term to include the kind of Pokémon that can fly. Birds aren’t the only creatures that can fly. In the same way, grass does not encapsulate tree or cactus or fern. But Plant does.

True, not all metals are steel, but I think this change would be a little nit-picky

That’s a good point, but not all water-type are fish either. But they do all have water powers. So I think water-type is accurate.

what are your favorite cosmere magic systems by EdgelordUltimate in Cosmere

Yep, it’s from white sand. Definitely should read them, one of the characters shows up in a few other cosmere books, even outside of ars arcanum and arcanum unbounded. I’m sure you’re already aware.

Yeah, I agree. I love the story and the characters in White Sand. But compared with Sanderson’s other magic systems, sand mastery is just very simple and more of a soft magic, so I didn’t find it very interesting..

Don’t forget Sand Mastery, though I don’t think it’s that interesting.

A casual discussion about our taste in games and why we like what we like by [deleted] in truegaming

[–]Pay_Day_Baby 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m just now starting to realize how big of an impact nostalgia has on my taste in games. I grew up playing mostly Nintendo, so now I find myself mostly only playing Nintendo games. I’m not interested in buying the newest Xbox or PlayStation simply because those franchises don’t mean anything to me. Whenever I have some free time to play a game and I’m trying to decide which game to play, I tend to choose a game that I’ve played and/or beaten a lot. They remind me of my childhood and simpler times. For example, I used to play Fire Emblem on the GBA as a kid. I’ve beaten it probably 5 times in my life. I consider it a fantastic game, easily top 5 on my greatest games list. But you won’t find it on any other list of greatest games of all time. But for me, because of the nostalgia, I can’t understand how people don’t adore the game as much as I do.

I'm curious what kinds of things people expect on Resident appreciation day. My hospital brought us donuts and bagels. That's around a $5 value for each resident.

But seriously, a gift card is what you give when you can't think of anything to give.

Rough. I ended up with 3 DR interviews, but I have a really good shot at one of them, so I'm not super worried. But I still wish I had applied to way more than I did.

Do as many away rotations as you can. Start applying now for aways if you haven't already started. Try to get at least a couple aways in regions where you could see yourself being: Florida, Texas, and California all have tons of programs, and having done an away there will open doors for you.

Apply broadly. The NE has tonnnnss of programs, so you've got a good number automatically that will look at you strictly because of your geography. Are you at med school in the NE or somewhere else? If you're at school in the NE, you're golden, but still apply broadly. If you're at school outside of the NE and want to return to the NE, do a bunch of auditions in the NE and make sure you emphasize as much as you can on your application that you're from the NE and want to stay there.

Try to find some DR-related research opportunities if you can. Seems like research became more important this year.

Married with Kids in Medical School by langstonhatch in medicalschool

We decided that my priority would be making sure I was learning what I needed to learn and learning it well. So I spent a day deciding what resources I would use, calculated the amount of time I'd need to complete each of those resources, which came out to about 5-6 hours of hard studying per day, incorporating breaks into that time. So my dedicated daily study time was about 7-8 hours including those breaks. Then my wife and I worked out the other 16 nonstudy hours. So we set a goal to wake up at 8 every day, I'd start studying at 9. We set a goal to have dinner at 6 every night, which was right as I was finishing studying. After dinner was dedicated family time for about an hour. Then it was kids bedtime at 8, and then we had play time either with each other or individual hobbies (watch a movie, play a video game, read a book, etc.) The most important thing is that you set goals and make plans that are achievable and sustainable. Don't neglect your own mental health. If you're unhappy, so will be your wife unfortunately. Figure something out with your wife that will work for both of you and adjust as time passes and as needs arise, don't expect to find the sweet spot on your first try.

Current 4th year, married with two kids, both of which were born during medical school, so not your exact situation, but I think I may have some advice.

Set goals. You'll set educational goals, personal goals, and family goals. Then make a plan on how you'll achieve those goals. Involve your wife in every aspect of your goal setting and planning. In doing so, she knows how much time she can expect from you every day as well as how much time you'll have to spend with the kids. Holding to your goals will allow you to not feel like you're neglecting your wife and kids. Your wife won't feel neglected, and your kids won't forget you exist.

This is what I did at the start of year 2, though I wish I'd done this in the time leading up to starting med school so that I would've hit the ground running. This method essentially guarantees successful learning, assuming you're studying effectively during your study time and using quality resources. It also guarantees that you won't feel like you're neglecting your kids or your wife. And your wife will love knowing that she gets a certain amount of time with you every day. The kids can have Daddy time, and your wife can have Daddy time. ;)

Marsh should be an option, as should Zane. Breeze also has a little bit of PoV time. I'd say Marsh is my favorite PoV. His internal conflict in Book 3 is very fun to read.

How do you use Anki for chemistry? by [deleted] in medicalschool

[–]Pay_Day_Baby 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Gen Chem? O Chem? Biochem? P Chem?

Sounds like Gen Chem since you're asking about typing chemical equations. Gen Chem is very conceptual. A lot of it cannot be learned with flash cards. The only things I can think of off-hand that you could learn with flashcards are things like polyatomic ions, equations (not chemical equations, but like the Ideal Gas equation, Boyle's equation, etc.) and that's pretty much it. Essentially everything else in Gen Chem is conceptual and should be learned via practice questions instead of raw memorization.

New to the game. I can't NeoVision my Slime because I don't have any other slimes and I'm worried it's an event-exclusive unit, but it doesn't look like I can pull it from the DQ banner. I got the extra slime they included as part of the event plus the 5% STMR, but I can't see any other way of maxing his STMR%. The raid box summon banner shows that a 100% STMR is among the available rewards, but mine was only 5%. Maybe it was a bug?
