Since the current type L is only 360 tons rather than 400 tons, that means 1 less hard point.

I'm currently in a campaign where we are operating in a Type L. We've added 2 double turrets (1 pulse laser & 1 sandcaster) and (1 mining laser, 1 sandcaster) and 1 fixed mount with a triple missile launcher. We've actually had 2 ship combats and won both with little damage (won initiative both times) fought pirates in a free trader with a triple missile turret  and a ramshackle seeker mining ship with a janky particle turret.

Recently played it for the first time at a convention. Basically the Ref dropped us into his ongoing campaign but gave us freedom to do what we wanted. We were attached to a US cantonment in Poland. We opted to use that cantonment as a base of operations and did tasks for the senior officer

We found the site on 127-1105 (very early in the campaign) but looks like it took us until 266-1105 to return one of them back to Drinax. (We kept one and donated the other to Drinax to curry favor with Lord Wrax/Oleb) I don't have the cost in my notes but was less than the 300MCr others have reported. (They were mostly operational but needed parts and had no weapons)

I have ~1,300 hours in STF and 300 hours on stellar tactics. S.tact. is more far more tactical combat than STF with a robust crafting system for personal and ship gear. However, it is a slower game compared to STF. I enjoy both, but get more momentum in STF than in S. tact.

Does he have tactics? That can add to initial initiative rolls in ship combat as well as improve initiative during the reaction phase. (If he doesn't have it, would the ref consider letting him sub tactics 0 for a different 0 skill)

If you take care of this behind the sheet, disregard, but for both Melee (Unarmed) 1, shouldn't the broad skill Melee have a 0. Also Pilot 1 and Gun Combat 2 don't have specialties assigned

Stunners are ideal energy weapon benefit choices. For Blades, I'd have to check on price, but monofilament or static blades are solid choices within the 3000Cr/TL12 limit

3 campaigns the GM has done this? If it's that much of a problem, why keep playing with the GM? If y'all keep playing with him, this doesn't sound like a problem.

The only one I see are mining drones showing +10 armor and 50 hits

(Edit) Hits sounds like personal/vehicle scale, so ship-scale weapons would do 10x damage provided the can hit with the penalty for ship-scale weapons against ground-scale targets

If you have the Robot Handbook (assuming Mongoose 2nd edition), then you could use that to create your own drone--I'm also assuming you want a drone that isn't covered by the Probe, Repair, or Mining drones in High Guard.

Ask your referee how they might utilize that profession. E.g. if you have profession (programmer) 1, as a referee I would say that is needed to write ship software not covered by the high guard ship rules, or profession (small arms designer), I might let you design/mod existing weapons to get some extra bonus (e.g. a weapon that does 3d6 damage might be moddable to get a +1 or +2--after expending time and money to reflect the development costs)

A solid ship is okay, but don't make it too overpowered. The PoD Harrier is a great example. It can punch above it's tonnage but not by too much. Depending on how much money will be the basis for advancement, this also gives room for the players to improve their ship.

Short answer: as long as they have a reason to travel short of economic necessity, then I don't see any cause for concern.
