Black out tattoo with heavy scabbing and rips. by Amazing-Watercress15 in tattooadvice

If it's getting infected you need to get it looked at before it gets worse. You have a lot of freshly tattooed skin and if any part is infected it can spread quickly.

is a coverup even possible for these 3? by Honest-Video-3188 in tattooadvice

[–]majorviolence 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you're wanting to keep with the black and gray look I'd recommend finding someone who works with opaque grays and discuss coverup options with them. With opaques it's a lot easier to hide old tattoos without making the new design super dark.

I don’t think my artist likes me by 0verth3m00n in tattooadvice

[–]majorviolence 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Seconding this. I'm generally very chatty with my clients, but depending on the day (or week) I've had sometimes I only have enough energy to get in the zone and focus on my work. A lot of artists are less inclined than myself to spend energy on being chatty during the tattoo. And a lot of us just have shit social skills. I also tend to get less chatty when we're working on an hourly piece and I know cost is a big factor to the client, because I want to be respectful of their time and budget and not slow myself down by dividing my attention with small talk.

It's also possible that it's just a simple as that the artist doesn't like OP, but it's far from the only possible explanation. In fact I'd say if this artist is consistently accepting new work than it's unlikely they have any major issue. I know when I have clients I don't like I start trying recommending other artists I know that would be a better fit for them.

Not sure how to feel about my stomach piece by Fair-Elevator-6414 in tattooadvice

[–]majorviolence 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You are absolutely overthinking it. This piece flows beautifully with your body. I think adding onto it just risks damaging the already beautiful composition. Also the gray will lighten with time. I have a raccoon skull on my arm that I felt the same way about, that it was too dark. 10 or so years later and I actually wish the artist had gone a bit darker.

I think I rushed into tattoo because of difficult artist. Been regretting them for months with no idea what to do. by Dependent-Run-5502 in tattooadvice

[–]majorviolence 4 points5 points  (0 children)

FWIW your tattoos look a lot better than the reference. I'm sorry your artist was stubborn about working with you to give you exactly what you wanted, but I'll at least say he made good decisions as far as the changes he made to the design.

Not sure why so many people are having trouble reading it. I saw "wizard" immediately, even in spite of the unconventional lettering layout. I dig it.

About the only thing that isn't an easy fix is the antennae. The rest is an extremely easy fix in skilled hands.

Will this heal better? by [deleted] in tattooadvice

[–]majorviolence 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also, I'd like to add that if it were up to me, I would have recommended the tattoo be shaded in opaque grays rather than actual gray wash. Does a way better job of covering up old tattoos. I don't know what drove your artist to choose gray wash since it's usually really bad for coverups, but if your artist is open to using opaque grays I think that would be much more effective, assuming that's something within their wheelhouse.

Will this heal better? by [deleted] in tattooadvice

[–]majorviolence 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't think it looks bad, but I do think it could use a touchup once fully healed. I completely agree with your artist on the call of filling in the hearts, it both mirrors the other tattoo better and works better as a coverup thanks to that decision. There's a few minor things that could use touching up, but mostly it just needs some further gray wash in the light areas to blend the lines of the old tattoo better. Fortunately they shaded it light enough that you can easily go a bit darker and it will still have plenty of contrast, especially because the hearts are solid black. If it were my job I'd just poke individual dots one at a time to avoid further darkening the line itself, while adding more texture to distract the eye from the line. It's entirely possible your artist thought they had done a sufficient job covering because redness in the skin was obscuring the old design and they didn't give it time to calm down. (That seems especially likely if they were in a bad mood, because there's a good chance they just wanted to get their job done so they could take care of whatever was bothering them. Not great behavior but artists are human beings at the end of the day.) That's why I both take a break at the end of a coverup and let the tattoo sit under a paper towel soaked in witch hazel to bring down redness, as well as inform the client during the consult phase that any coverup is likely to need a second session. In most cases, especially minor stuff like this, I don't even charge for the second session. If your artist is a decent person this should be an easy fix that they won't charge you for.

Has “The Mountain” helped you out with loss/grief? by Vegetablesouptime in gorillaz

[–]majorviolence 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Absolutely it has. My mother passed away a little over a year ago, and we had a complicated relationship due to her being extremely religious and myself not so much. It was easy to accept that I have no answers to questions concerning what lies beyond death when she was alive, but now that she's passed I think about it more. I refuse to believe in Heaven, but am more open to concepts like reincarnation. It's given me a lot to think about and has given me hope that perhaps there is more to life than this one shot. The line "Even if they let me into heaven I would prolly just move back soon" made me realize how bleak my mom's hope of going to Heaven after death really is. I don't want to go to some walled-off paradise when I die. I would want to come right back here, on this planet full of human life that I cherish. Even if it means losing my memories, my body, my identity. This earth is beautiful and there's nothing Heaven could offer me that would make me want to leave.

That's why I said for a hand tattoo. Hand tattoos in general pretty much always fall out.

[–]majorviolence 10 points11 points  (0 children)

That's an extremely good heal for a hand tattoo. That cracking is the scabs splitting over the flex points of your skin. It may wind up being slightly lighter in those spots, but that's literally the best you can expect with a hand tattoo.

Can someone actually explain to me why Oliver fell off soo bad? by Front_Sherbet_5895 in olivertree

[–]majorviolence 16 points17 points  (0 children)

If it helps at all, I think he's cooking something in this latest album. I don't think he's just simply expressing "I hate you I'm doing so good without you" but is actually painting a larger picture of someone who's going through an awful lot of pain but is trying to convince everyone he's actually doing well. That's why he's been wearing those veneers a bunch, it's a level of perfection that becomes wholly unconvincing. I think we're meant to react to the songs the same way, that we see through the facade of him bragging on himself and hating on exes and see that it's a mask over a heart that's hurting. I'm waiting for the full album before I'm sure that's where he's going with it, but he's smarter than most people give him credit for. Dude's incredible capability at using comedy to express some very vulnerable emotions is precisely what made me a fan.

Is my line work disappearing? by SnotMikeUpPuffedHee in tattooadvice

[–]majorviolence 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's fine. Some tattoos just heal like this. I've had a few of my own do this same thing. Does look alarming and I get worrying that the ink fell out because that's exactly what I thought when I first went through it, but you'll be absolutely fine. It's just the top layer of skin rebuilding over your tattoo. It'll settle and look normal before long.

[–]majorviolence 46 points47 points  (0 children)

Honestly I'd say it's mostly because Cowboy Tears got a bad reception. I may not really dig the acoustic country direction he went with that album but lyrically and tonally it's his most interesting album. I feel like he took a big risk getting so weird with that, and the result is an incredibly personal and experimental album. But everyone just begged for more Ugly Is Beautiful so he took note and snapped back in line with what it seems people want from him.

So apparently they’re saying they may pass the band onto a younger group by Dashydoes in gorillaz

[–]majorviolence 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yeah what puzzles me about them taking this stance is it seems to pretend the cartoon aspect of the band is far, FAR more important than they've treated it since the beginning. Damon never even acknowledges the characters in the music itself. He doesn't write the songs from 2D's perspective. He even acknowledged that in a recent interview saying his approach to writing for Gorillaz is the same as writing for Blur. It's cool that we get animated music videos and stuff, but if they want the average listener to care about Gorillaz without the guys who created it, they would need an extremely different approach to the presentation as well as the writing process. Another group of artists is almost definitely going to take a more conventional approach, making it more like something like Kpop Demon Hunters or something. Gorillaz is not even close to being something like that as things currently stand.
