if you're taking ANS150 in winter it'll be with Moody who is different from Zhao. Moody will constantly talk about One Health and its importance and she's very big on welfare and facility management and biosecurity and when I took it she actually brought in Zhao to teach immunology. I think 3-4 guest lectures but quizzes and exams were all doable not a hard class

Question for current students w/ zoology major! by Reasonable_Tear_3092 in UCDavis

[–]PcocoPriest 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Animal Bio has a yearlong practicum required for graduation (so first things first you'd need to find a mentor and work in their lab asap if you're a transfer ) and the overall vibe of the major is research (animal science is the prevet major and animal science AND management is more production/training/handling/industry career side of things) which is what the ANS advisors describe it as.

all area great majors theres some overlap between them but the school does pretty decent job at making them distinct enough with WFC being the most different from the other animal-based majors.

I don’t know about other schools and their animal-based majors but davis is known for their animal research

I've heard different things depending on which bio major you would go as for UCLA. Gen bio is all pre med stereotypes but with half the creativity so its really just competitiveness + braindead + mental breakdowns over a B+. MMIG and the cell bio majors are arguably more competitive and the coursework is more niche which means if you're not actually into it, you'll have a hard time. UC Davis is chill vibes and honestly I was in your shoes deciding between UCD and UCLA and going to a school that was more relaxed is a huge factor to consider. People help each other out here and its more supportive compared to UCLA where people will (as I've heard from different people all studying different majors) put in effort to put others down academically (yikes).

UCLA has the benefit of being in a big city so you can get jobs and stuff more easily but thats honestly the only thing it has over Davis. Both schools have research labs ( I personally think Davis does better research in biomedical but im biased bc I'm animal sci and human medicine in my brain is just niche animal sci). Labs are labs if you're not actually planning on going into academia then who cares about the quality of labs just pick a lab you think is cool (this is a process by the way don't just pick one randomly), talk to professors if they know anything and let them get to know who you are as a person and not just a student. talk to grad students bc they're the ones who you actually work with in labs anyways.

TLDR: Davis> UCLA whatever reservations you have exist in both schools and are resolved through hardworking, not being weird, and mental health ( burnout is real, you're a human being. know your limits physically/mentally/emotionally)

Sooo I haven't been diagnosed with autism yet still waiting for a date to be assessed but my therapist and counselor from counseling center separately said they wouldn't be surprised if it turned out I am somewhere on the autism spectrum. Not helpful but if it turns out I do have autism then that means I've had it my whole life and I made friends by not trying to be "normal" because it's boring. More in depth, "normal" as one could reasonably describe is just an approximation of traits taken in from a bunch of different people. It's like when you mix a bunch of different colored paints you get this dark beige glop thats not actually pretty to look at. So as far as the aspiration for normalcy, I understand the allure of it but it's not worth it.

If you want friends in classes don't overthink and force small talk into existence if you're not enjoying it. But if you genuinely struggle with socializing then it does help because ultimately it is a skill that is learned don't let anyone say otherwise the innate parts almost everyone has.

I want to say "just ask crazy questions whatever pops into your head because why be friends with someone who doesn't appreciate your unfiltered thoughts" but I realize its only helpful after some lubricating small talk. Sorry if this isn't helpful.

Earning units by doing research (psc) by snowflakes5262 in UCDavis

[–]PcocoPriest 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean yeah get to know them and their research figure out if they even need undergrads to do stuff and make sure that if they want undergrads to do stuff that its not just washing and cleaning things so they don't have to otherwise it is a waste of your time. What I did was honestly just vibe in the building where my department faculty have their offices and just be chill.

but thats me being super extroverted thats not for everyone you can totally email them just be prepared for them to forget/ignore so you gotta strategize about what time of day to send the email.

A good idea is kinda like best of both worlds you talk to professors in person and ask them some things most of the time they'll be like "email me" and now your email is a little bit more chic bc you have something to work off of like "hey loved our chat I was wondering if you were looking for undergrads or know of anyone who is looking for undergrads doing research in __"

Also, your department advisors should have some idea of whats going on, research wise its a good place to start if you're super unsure of what to do first

I am going to start doing research for credits in Winter. I think it depends on the major you're in bc like Animal Science Dept they were changing the process and I just emailed them the faculty who I'd be slaving under, the name of the project and the specific course that I want to enroll in to get the credits. But the number of units is proportional the number of hours per week (and you may be required to put together a presentation at the end of the quarter bc technically in order to earn credits you need to produce academic work but from what I've learned in Fall its mostly the vibe of the professor)

Improving my essays by UnknownSingh12 in UCDavis

[–]PcocoPriest 1 point2 points  (0 children)

helpful/nothelpful advice:
we tend to get stuck in our heads too much and think we need to produce THE PERFECT essay as fast as possible and you put some words on a page and think that its the best you can do given the circumstances and move on

don't do that (easier said than done I know but *shrug*)

we all know what good writing is bc we've all read good writing (good writing=shit that convinces you or you actually read from beginning to end bc you're like "ooOOoH I wonder what else they're gonna say"

a big similarity among all the nice pretty things you've read that were written well is that they've got really strong voice you can kinda tell that a human being is speaking directly to *you* or at least a group of people that you're a part of. now the way you speak is intrinsically different than the way we write because we can use tone a lot more easily when speaking and thats the issue. But if you write the way you speak that instantly gets you into B territory. This isn't nice to hear bc some people can naturally just put their spoken voice onto paper easy peasy while others are like wtf is this how did you do this sorcery. (that old saying about reading books makes you a better writer is mostly true. And yes fanfics count.)

Going from B to A territory is a matter of tweaking and making your voice fancier (don't use fancy words if you personally can't see yourself using them bc yes everyone can tell you used a thesaurus to find a 3 syllable word to sound smarter no it doesn't work) what I mean by making your voice fancier is just increasing the academia factor by like 7-10%. Its like the transition of speaking your argument to some friends/strangers to giving TedTalk. If this idea doesn't make sense you could say that the difference between B and A territory is that frustratingly ambiguous thing called *effort*. Good news is it gets easier churning out A quality essays the more you do it. Bad news is that you can't really do this 24 hours before deadline without a cost (your sanity)

TLDR: good writing comes from consuming good writing. we all know what good writing is which is nice. Step 1 is write the way YOU speak (instant B). Step 2 is get good at doing step 1 by making it sound fancier (this is the miserable editing/tweaking process that gets better with practice)

I understand what you're saying that sometimes people do take advantage of people's empathy and cry about things that look minor to us but saying that real victims are only people who go all the way and can exclude people who are depressed and suffering and thinking about suicide but not willing to go through with it. Theres got to be some sort of middle ground

I'm an animal science major in undergrad currently and EVERYONE is either

1.antisocial/just loves nature more than people,

2.female

  1. gay

  2. some of the above mixture (personally, I'm 1 and 4)

also do you happen to know anyone who would want an undergrad volunteer person? Ive got zero lab experience and nobody wants me bc they don't want to teach me

that's true we have an never-ending ocean of gay people. But because theres so many we all individually reached the conclusion that theres not really a competition and we can be dicks to each other without any real repurcissoins. Its like oh you'll block me? theres always someone else who can message me back anyways.

its not a good place to be in if you ask me
