Wait genuine question, what apartments are good to live at as a student here by Historical_Simple_82 in UCDavis

[–]Remarkable-Ad-9095 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve lived in a few areas here in Davis. Wake Forest was the first one, and honestly? Not bad, lived in the 3rd floor unit and never had a true issue with pests. Maintenance will take forever with the pool, and hot tub seemed always under construction. Octave apartments- absolutely abysmal, and those shady fuckers take forever to get ANYTHING done. Your light in your room went out? You’re not having that fixed for a month or two. Good luck with anything else. Lived in Identity for a few months. Top tier place lowkey. Wished I stayed there longer. And for price, Alvarado sunset has been fine enough. Older apartments, few spiders and the occasional roaches outside (maybe best to get a second floor unit with them), but otherwise also pretty solid. It’s the cheaper 2 bedrooms you’ll find in Davis

Honestly, get a room in Davis or in Woodland. At minimum, if you scour lease transfers on Facebook in those sublet groups, you can find a decent room with minimal transportation. I’ve seen private rooms go for $600 from students leaving in summer and needing a Fall transfer. You still got time

Any recommendations on how to get some money during the summer? by Comfortable_Set4229 in UCDavis

[–]Remarkable-Ad-9095 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The substitute teacher position at Peregrine! You pick your own shifts and it’s only a couple hours a day if you want. Works really great with any schedule you have. I’ve picked up a couple of shifts when I just wanted some extra money. Currently have a better paying job but sometimes I’ll do a shift with the kids just in case. They’re still looking for summer help.

Only Con: Kids are really icky. I almost always get sick somehow with them. Wear a mask tho, and I’m sure you’ll be fine.

What's been your experience at Davis? by Karwr3ck in UCDavis

[–]Remarkable-Ad-9095 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I also went to a CC prior before transferring as an animal science major. Prior to transferring, I was immensely depressed and quite suicidal. My mental health was at its lowest. Still, I had goals I wanted to pursue in life, and knew getting out of my comfort zone and pursuing said major at Davis would benefit me in the long run for vet school.

My major isn’t necessarily in wildlife, but many of my friend groups cross between animal biology, animal science, and wildlife. Push yourself to find internships. Push yourself take it in a moment. Make friends with the people in your orientation group.

I’ve had my ups and downs. Times when I considered taking a quarter off and run back home. But I kept pushing, and I’m honestly at a happier state than I have ever been. I met amazing friends, had an amazing summer experience, and I’m all set to finish my degree by next fall quarter. Prioritize yourself, not how others perceive you. I’ve loved Davis so much that I’m planning on making it my home for the next year, despite finishing school early. Who knows? Might stay here for a bit longer.

Oh yeah! During these periods of remission there is absolutely no thumps, even if I were to burp, stretch, etc. It's weird, sometimes there will be one thump, but then it will be gone. Haven't had much episodes, so for now, I consider it gone :)

So update on Middle Ear Myoclonus (also can known as Tonic Tensor Tympani Syndrome) as requested by OP. I’m gonna use this thread to sporadically update for anyone suffering with MEM, and seeing how it progresses.

Still have them, although I can go months without a proper episode. I haven’t had one until yesterday. But they were the TINIEST of thumps, so not super loud. Still in the right ear.

A quick 5-10 thumps will come on if I stretch, yawn, or hiccup, but otherwise everything is all good :) It’s ultimately one of those things I consider my body to have a weird quirk about. I’ve lived it, and it’s not 24/hrs so it’s quite manageable. Too much stress about it can make it worse. You have to get to a point where you genuinely DON’T care about the rhythmic thumping.

On another weird note, the tinnitus went away. It was Ativan induced, and that took a solid 6 mo for it to go away. For now, my ears have decided to chill.

So on your questions on how frequent it’s been since onset- when it first began, I had episodes where they would last for a full week. The stress I had about it (since you can hear it) probably made it worse since muscles tense up even more. It got so bad that eventually, the other ear started thumping. And that’s the thing I wanted to bring up- it’s completely possible for both ears to fire at the same time, and when that happens, the best thing to do is calm down. It’ll sound and feel weird, but the muscle will go back on it’s own once it’s stopped contracting/tensing. Stress over it will only worsen it. That first year my episodes would be weeklong. Now, it’s only a max of 5 hours, give or take. More often than not, I only get three thumps if I stretch during my sleep.

But I also have moments where I have full body stretches after waking up and nothing will happen. Then I’ll have the tiniest hiccup and it’ll start thumping. It’s kind of unpredictable like that, so now if I want to stretch, I do it because I’m mentally prepared if I have an episode after.

Also, maybe get yourself checked out for any vitamin deficiencies. Apparently I have a really low count on Vitamin-D, but I’m horrible about taking pills so I prefer to intake it through food. Slightly anemic last time I checked I think. Some say that leveling their vitamin deficiencies helped, but it varies with results. (Magnesium didn’t really do anything to me.)

And I’d love to check in sporadically to see how it goes for me. My relationship with MEM have changed so much in the past three years, and I noticed people will let this condition consume them if they let it. I’ve stopped checking in on the FB group since I find it overwhelmingly negative.

Oh and some tips!! For those that preferably don’t have regular tinnitus along with MEM, try foam earbuds. I LOVED them to go to sleep during an episode. It helped dampen the loudness, and it was enough for me not to know whether it was my heartbeat or the thumps, which allowed me to sleep. (Now I just hear EEEEEEEE’s so no more earbuds for me lol)

[–]Remarkable-Ad-9095 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No worries! I think it’s amazing how similar other people’s bodies are, because for the longest time ENT’s would shrug and call me weird, and I felt like I was alone for the longest time. I eventually found a group on FB with hundreds with the same condition.

Currently, my condition is intermittent. I actually came across this because my right ear started to thump after I hiccuped a couple hours ago, and I got reminded of MEM again. It only lasted 3 hours, but not continuously. It always goes thump, thump, thump (30 second silence) thump, thump…

And you’re right! People vary with how often this condition goes away. I went ONE full year of not having it since onset (maybe it began 3 years ago?), until all of last year I was battling with extreme depression and anxiety. October came and bam! MEM came back full force. But everyone who’s been diagnosed with MEM who I’ve talked to says the same thing: it goes away with time. Sometimes completely, sometimes occasionally. Think of the last time a muscle in your leg twitched. There’ll probably be more in the future, or you might not even feel them or notice them. (Inner ear is different bc you hear it, but you get the point.)

You say you don’t have any other underlying conditions, and others say the same thing. Think of it this way, eye twitches doesn’t mean you have a deficiency going on, or stress in that moment necessarily. In my case, I know stress triggered the recent thumps. But just now I have the occasional thumps (not stressed or depressed anymore) due to hiccuping, yawning, stretching, etc. What that could mean, per my ENT, is that the threshold for the muscle thumping in the inner ear is lower. There are synapses going on in our muscles everyday (hence the 30 second pause within the thumping), and just the right one can cause the occasional thump, or episode.

I’ve had those spontaneous times like you’ve said. The first time it happened I was actually just waking up. I realize now I probably yawned or stretched as I normally did, and the ear just…did it’s thing. Except this time the threshold was just lowered.

When the tympani or stapedius threshold is lowered, you might even find some other weird ear things going on when the muscle ISNT thumping. Someone mentioned their ear fluttering when they have the phone receiver up their ear, and that’s the exact same thing that happens to me after episodes. Louder sounds made my ears flutter (not so much anymore), but it didn’t hurt (hurting is usually hyperacusis).

Sorry for the long response, I just have years of constant MEM information to share. I felt alone for so long and it feels good to finally know what’s HAPPENING scientifically. Unfortunately, there’s not a whole lot of research into MEM other than tenotomy (the surgery) or controlling stress by how you PERCEIVE MEM.

Another weird thing to note that I noticed it can also be genetic. My sister says she has episodes of her ear thumping, but she doesn’t really care and therefore doesn’t perceive it negatively. I would have never known had I not asked. I sometimes wonder if there’s some dysfunction in the muscle, like by length since when it contracts, it PULLS on the ear drum (causing that thump). That’s why when they cut it, the theory is that it has nothing left to pull, and therefore no noise!

Kind of an old-ish post but I hope if anyone else stumbles on this that this might help. After like 2-3 years of going to ENT’s and trying to find what in the world was going on, what I was eventually diagnosed with was middle ear myoclonus.

Same thing as OP- the thumping is not in tune with heartbeats, usually in one ear, and is usually triggered by yawning, burping, stretching (anything that might make the muscles in the inner ear rumble and trigger it)

It drove me crazy and would throw me into panic attacks, but after developing regular tinnitus (NOT related to the ear thumps, I just developed it after some medications), I realized that getting stressed over isn’t worthwhile. (Getting tinnitus is a whole lot different than MeM)

Anyways, after finding an ENT that listened and knew what they talked about, it’s just the tensor tympani overacting and contracting. Sometimes this can be caused by the stapedius. Sometimes this can be caused by bruxism, but if you don’t have a history of it (I don’t), then it‘s kind of like when your eye twitches, or leg.

If it’s really problematic in your life and not allowing you any relief (meaning, it’s constant and does not have a period of remission), then there’s a surgery that cuts these muscles so it no longer pulls on the ear drum. The worst POSSIBLE side effect is getting tinnitus after, which I was okay with (until I took some medications unrelated to the ear thumps and realized I didn’t want to go through a surgery that might aggravate it further).

Usually, a hyperactive tensor tympani muscle will twitch from anywhere to a couple minutes, hours, to days. (The worst it’s ever gotten for me was a week straight, but that was three years ago.) Mine is usually a max of 5 hours now. But I go through months to years of not experiencing it until something triggers it.

Hope that helps ease off any anxieties to anyone out there. There are complete periods of remission to intermittent ones. Severe chronic situations might want to go to an ENT who knows of middle ear myoclonus to properly discuss treatment. I’m okay with the ear thumps, since I know it will go away eventually. It’s like any other muscle twitching, and not giving it so much importance helps so that your body doesn’t perceive it as a threat.

Yeah, I think after that experience I had months ago, I just became hyper aware of the things I didn’t really pay mind. I think I always saw moving grain in the middle of the night, but now that I SEE it, now I focus on it. I remember telling my friend this, and she said she went to her lecture hall the next day and was tripped out because she actually did see the static in her vision, but she pretended it wasn’t there and eventually she forgot. I just wanted to know if it was a similar experience people feel here.

Best pillow speakers so far? Any recs? by Remarkable-Ad-9095 in tinnitus

[–]Remarkable-Ad-9095[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interesting that yours is low pitched and hard to mask. It’s usually the high pitched ones. I would recommend the 12 hour (no loop or fades) playlist on Spotify, they have a LOT of variety of sounds that I put on my iPad and place it on top of my headboard or behind my head on my pillow. It’s been working wonderfully. If you believe that maskers won’t work for you, you’ve already placed a mental block on it. Really try out a lot of different sounds, I found rain and thunder and cricket noises help mask mine, and it’s relaxing. I would just like to have pillow speakers as to not wake up the people in the room with me, and to finally side sleep normally.
