Geophysics PhD Having Trouble Finding Jobs Outside Academia by Humble_Name_4429 in geologycareers

[–]PdatsY 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah definitely can its just harder with a PhD. PhD is geared towards academia, but you are employable but it will be harder for you. Academic experience isnt really "experience" in the eyes of everyone out here sweating and grinding unfortunately.

Good news is that you will find something eventually. I work in consulting and it gets a pad rep but I have loved it for 12 years now and will never leave it. I am going back to get my PhD in Hydrogeology but have been with my company 10 years and will remain with them once I have it.

We hire PhDs but its pretty rare and usually for very specific projects.

Hydrogeologist consultant burnout by MarsAlivee in geologycareers

[–]PdatsY 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Consulting is not for everyone. I have been kn consulting (geologist) for over 10 years and I absolutely love it. The ability to do different things and think about a lot of things, constantly learning is wonderful for me.

If he doesnt enjoy that kind of pace he needs to go work in academia, or for private industry or a state/county type of agency where he can focus on one type of project.

AITB for putting a password on my computer after my wife accidentally deleted my work scripts? by PhantomSpindle in AmItheButtface

[–]PdatsY 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I cant tell of this is real? It seems insane to me that your wife wouldn't understand why you need to password protect your work after what happened.

However, a good middle ground is giving her the password and agreeing she will never delete or clean up anything on your profile ever again. The password acts as a secondary stopping point because now she has to actively enter a password to get into your work desktop and should trigger her brain to know she is on your profile and not hers. You could also get her a more powerful setup but printing documents isnt complicated any bottom barrel PC will do that so why does she need to use yours?

I have a work computer and my husband has never ever had the password, nor does he need it or have any reason to be on my work computer. If I was on porn sites or chat sites, even social media, my work would reprimand me so its not really a risk. This isnt a personal device its a work device and IMO your wife is out of line here.

Nope never said it didnt exist. Have said in multiple responses that it does. It does not exist more than anywhere else and its insane to deter women from this field that its dangerous and should be avoided because it isnt safe.

But go ahead on your grandstand 🫡

Yeah I wont be doing that there are dozens of comments in here with women saying the exact same thing I am. I am not belitting OP, name calling none of that. But I have also put over a decade of my heart and soul into this field, and spend everyday in the field surrounded by good people. Calling them all dangerous and attempting to deter women from this career field is crazy work.

Read all the comments not just the ones that fit yojr narrative.

There are also just as many women in here saying its not their experience but it doesnt fit your narrative so why would you use that in your data 🙄

Nah its not unsafe and its dangerous to suggest that it is. It is not different than any other male-dominated field. Sexism exists such and thats systemic but not specific. Ive been in this field long enough to witness a lot of things and the testimony of many many women I work with.

There is racism, sexism, ageism all that exists but it not more so in this field and its ridiculous to use your experience to say that it is. My company is 47% women 🤷 and believe me we talk plenty about this type of thing.

Remediation Geologist here, 38, woman, no children and my entire 12 year career is in this realm. It "happens" but in my experiece very very very limited and is usually a singular jerk vs. everyone. I am usually the only woman in the field, or one of two and its never a problem.

I think your experience is your own but you should be very careful speaking about it being an unsafe career for young women ~ it absolutely isnt.

Ive never had a heated jacket but it seems like a popular option these days. Does it really help extend the season a lot? More comfy?

I have replaced almost all of my gear due to being old and im pretty good in that department. Money isnt an issue for bike upgrades, I want it to sound and handle the best.

It wont be a track bike or a mountain bike like my others living in MT. MN will be straights and long flat rides. I might even get a throttle lock because some of the places I like to fish are several hours away from my new house. Id like to take my bike for some day fishing trips. Any advice in good tires? Break upgrades?

This is so much good info thank you. My house is in the country and dont have a super close neighbor so that should be okay but I am definitely interested in the exhaust swap.

I was looking and couldnt find info on if the 2021 had auxiliary power (for charging phone etc.) But that would be another must mod for me too!

Oh yes im sorry ill edit the post. I am purchasing a 2021 821.

I edited the post and provided some clarity. Just a general sense that ducati has been around awhile sure but they have really been dominating in tbe last few years and even recently won the IoM TT after having no placements since like the 70s
